Will we be able to make custom insignia?

  • One feature that I’m really hoping for in Sea of Thieves is the ability to make custom insignia; either using an in-game creator, or using Photoshop and Illustrator. I think it would be so awesome to have said custom insignia on your ship’s sails and on a patch on your crew’s clothing. To be able to change the color of your sails to match would take it even a step further.

Now, I know there is a huge concern about copyrighted/offensive/inappropriate imagery, but I think that can be (relatively) easily counteracted. Take Battlefield 1 for instance. Not only do they have an emblem creator, but they have a “Report Offensive Emblem” feature that is pretty effective. Furthermore, there could be an initial approval process that it has to go through before the insignia would see the light of day.

As a graphic designer, having custom insignia implemented in the game would sky-rocket the game’s awesomeness level for me.

    Thoughts?

Edit: To even further counter inappropriate content, there could be a "Zero Tolerance" clause that you would have to agree to before entering the emblem creator. Then, if your emblem gets reported X amount of times, each offense would be a worse punishment; ultimately getting your Xbox Live account suspended indefinitely.

    Thoughts? Criticisms?

Yeah that would be really good. I'd prefer an in-game creator that you can use to create an icon for the sails.

  • I think this would be good if they added a sort of "Guild" or "Clan" system. Maybe call them "Fleets"?

If a crew is all members of the same fleet (or the crew could vote on which players fleet design to use, basically elect a captain), the ship would follow a theme set for that fleet. Colors, emblems and decorative ship items could all be set across all ships under a certain fleet.

Would allow for people to recognize certain groups at a distance and either chase/ avoid them based on notoriety.

  • @treblucfayle Exactly! That's the other caveat I was gonna go into. There is so much potential here...

  • @treblucfayle I love that idea.
Even just 4 crew members can go on two sloops and try take on galleons that way.

  • An in-game generator would be a nice place to start, later expand to the possibility of uploading truly custom designs. If ship upgrades are added a captain would have his own upgrades and be able to choose his own flag and alliance/team flag.

  • I think every player should have his own custom flag. Just like people have their own avatars on forums. There has been a way to filter out inappropriate avatars for years. It shouldn't be a problem.

Whoever is chosen as Captain gets their flag hanging off the ship.

  • @casesugar401098 That's a good idea, too.

  • Custom Jolly Rogers spotted off the port bow would be great for players who wish to be famous, regognize an insignia that killed you? return the favor. You could also pretend to be a friendly by flying certain colors. I think it would add greatly to the game experience.

  • It's funny that you use Battlefield 1 as an example supporting the idea of custom emblems... when I was going to use it as an illustration of why it's a bad idea. Whether there is reporting there or not, on any given game I can always find at least a handful of hairy genitalia insignia... I'd expect more female images, but I don't want to think too deeply about the psychology of juvenile drawings. You also find anime images, cartoon characters, and a ton of really crude artwork. Every once in a great while you see something both impressive AND appropriate to the game setting... but that's not the norm, it's definitely the exception.

I'd rather see Sea of Thieves with a library of stock flags that you can choose from... or even earn and use, rather than a "draw your own" scheme that results in a lower visual experience on the whole.

  • It would be a cool idea, but only if there is a report system properly implented for offensive things.

But of course, think of the possibilities!

You could have a unofficial fleet
Also easier to notice your crewmembers
also add that people could change the colors! of every single cosmetic.
    clothes, boots, whatever!

  • @capn-light9g What about this? To even further counter inappropriate content, there could be a "Zero Tolerance" clause that you would have to agree to before entering the emblem creator.
