More cannons for small sloops

  • Although there is a great point of playing large 3-4 man ships, its still difficult to counter 4 cannons with only 1 at your disposal. Yes, the sloops are faster and more maneuverable, but if you HAVE to engage, there's still 4v1. The large ships have up to 4 people and the sloops have up to 2, yet the large ship has a cannon for each of their members. I think 1 more cannon should be added to the sloop on each side. I don't want to take a cannon away from the large ship to make it fair because you can set a course to broadside someone and even the Captain wants to fire too.

Please add a cannon to the sloop's sides, or maybe the front or rear???

    Thanks

  • @justcaptain-x That or a swivel cannon at the front, the little sloops definetly need some more fire power. only reliable way ive found to sink galleons is with explosive barrels

  • Would rather see an aft or stern cannon. An aft cannon, though, would probably be unbalanced. A stern cannon would be nice because it would discourage pursuit.

  • @lucid-stew those are the same things! did you mean bow (front) or stern (aft)?

  • I think we just need a mid-sized ship for 2 players, with 2 cannon on each side. The sloop doesn't really have room for more guns, IMO.

oh, that's right, FORE and aft. :D Yeah, meant aft cannon good, fore cannon unbalanced.

  • Please up vote and comment on this post. The devs seem to really care about out options and desires.

  • The sloop sits lower in the water, making it more difficult to do any significant damage to it. Got a Galleon coming up that you can't shake? Sail in close to him, you're much lower than he is, the Galleon cannons can't depress far enough to hit you, and you can do lower hull damage with ease.

The sloop is meant to be a ship for the experienced players. Gotta use the ol' thinker in the dome.

I think if they slightly shift the cannon towards the bridge and then added another one, maybe with more of a turning angle towards to front of the ship, that would work.

  • ....you said the Galleon has enough cannons for its members, but so does the Sloop. The Sloop also sports a much higher turn rate and lower profile. Losing your battles? Sail closer or sail away. Problem solved.

  • @shadewolf-dk

But when its 2man crew vs 4 man crew, odds are not in your favor and they could easily board, distract the small crew, move their boat away and then open fire again.

Didn't realize about the lower part though. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind

  • @justcaptain-x I have had a few battles with some Galleons against my two man Sloop. Yes, it is definitely a challenge, but totally possible. And I am NO "master gamer", I am at best an infrequent player of games. You have to check these forums for tips as there are lots out there. I used two that worked well. First, sail INTO the wind as the Galleons are slower when sailing into the wind. Use storms to evade, as Galleons can have a tougher time with storms.
In one battle we were being chased by a Galleon, so I decided to start to zigzag the sloop and my mate would alternate on the cannons. The sloop does NOT have to be totally sideways to shoot backwards, just at an angle. We emptied all the cannonballs on our ship with this technique and if my teammate was a bit better of a shot we could have easily sunk the Galleon, as most of the shots could have hit the Galleon. Hit it a few times and they ended up hitting a rock in their attempt to try and get more broadside to shoot their cannons.
It really showed the potential of a 2 man crew against a Galleon.

  • Hopefully we'll just be able to add/remove and place cannons (and other things) to an appropriate limit, while being given an appropriate trade-off of doing so.

  • @rcsnipes100 thank you. I will keep these things in mind in future sailing.

  • @RCSnipes100 is right, there are major differences in mobility between the sloop and galleon.

The galleon is designed for big broadsides and long straight runs (sailing straight without turning) In a race without turns, the galleon will win every time (if both ships have the same wind direction). Also, as I said, it is designed for big broadsides, it will try and go straight to get max speed, then turn to get a broadside on you. So if you see a galleon straighten out and set sails, duck in behind it or turn in the opposite direction to escape.

Sloops on the other hand are designed for hit and run tactics. In a turning contest, a sloop will sail literal circles around a galleon with ease. So while it can't win a straight race with a galleon, it can out maneuver it. Use this to your advantage by ducking behind the galleon and angle yourself occasionally to take pot shots. Another good tactic is to stick close to land while fighting a galleon. Galleons are meant to fight on the open sea where there are no obstructions. But a sloop is best in an area where there are obstacles. Since a sloop can turn fast and pick up speed easily (since it only has the one sail to adjust) you can sail around the island or rocks using them as shields and put a major hit on the galleon's speed since they will have to turn to not only avoid the land, but also to get a broadside.

Also, don't forget to take in some sail when turning, it cuts your speed but also cuts your turn radius down, so you turn faster. This works on both ships.

    Hope this helps.

  • 2 cannons would work! Or a chase cannon or maybe front cannon to add a benefit to the smaller nimble ship. There just is not much use other than out manuvering just to survive.
