Abysmal lack of players. Increase server population?

  • Massive lack of other players in this game, feels like you have to win a lottery to run into another ship. I've played for a few hours and NEVER seen another player. All I've ever heard from friends is that you NEVER see other ships unless you're incredibly lucky, maybe see one other person every 2 or 3 hours of gameplay.

You need to massively increase server population to support this map size.

The map is way too big for the tiny amount of ships on each server. I'm guessing there are something like 16-24 players per server, right? Yeah that won't work with a map this size, Devs. You need 100-200 players minimum.

A pirate game where you can't actually BE A PIRATE because there are no other players to steal from... Is not a very good pirate game.

  • You can find other ships fairly easily by sailing to the other outposts on the map. Chances are someone somewhere is either getting a quest or returning from one. Also, the early quests are generally pretty close to your outpost.

  • yes increase server population, im I don't think that would work but increase team size to 5

  • @seztrenn I played about 2 hours max, and saw like four ships. I think its ok.

  • @Seztrenn
You want around 50 boats per server?? That would just make this game like Skull & Bones!!
This isn't a battle royale type fps, this is s Shared World Adventure Game & the encounters with other crews are supposed to be a special event, it wouldn't be if it was turned into a boating lake of chaos!!

  • @seztrenn The release notes do mention that ship visibility has been increased -
Ship Visibility - Keep your eye on the horizon! Ships are now visible from further afar, will you fight or flee?

One of the best options is to change areas and check the Outposts as well as keeping an eye on the horizon, it was mentioned some time ago that Rare prefer to keep ship encounters as an 'occasion', to maintain that excitement on encountering another ship as well as the option to decide whether to engage or avoid combat.

  • G'day @seztrenn, I have the opposite experience. Been tripping over ships each time I log in. In my last session we came across a sloop almost straight away and with 20 mins had 3 galleons and the sloop all within our view.

This is the beauty of the game, no two sessions will be the same.

  • I was playing with a friend and at a certain moment we were battling with two other ships. I think the server population is fine now, thanks to the spyglass you can see other ships from far away so you can attack if you want.

  • @lucid-stew you have a fantastic name. And your reply is accurate, in my experience anyway.
Could this also maybe be a regional issue or the like? Just spit balling without knowing data

That's good to hear. It was definitely possible before to debark onto an island and have someone get at you from beyond the horizon fairly quickly.

  • I would also like to see an increase in amount of players in the world. In my opinion the world feels pretty empty without seeing ships on the horizon

  • We got into two large battles tonight, one we ended up forcing the other ship to flee to repair and rearm. They attacked first and got their butts beat. The other was a tougher fight that became a race to cash in our chests. We lost our ship, they got a chest to their ship but I stole it back. With our ship sank but both chests cashed in and them unable to land any gun shots on us they too gave up and left before we could pick anymore of them off.

The best one was a minor battle where we were heading to a quest island. I ended up on their ship and was about to crash them before they got me and regained control just in time. We saw a fair number of ships that were non hostile. So population seems fine to me.

  • @logansdadtoo Sorry but if the most fun thing to do in the game is supposed to be a "special event that only happens once in a while" then there's a problem with the game.

Im not complaining though, in the alpha it was horrible, sailing from island to island for hours with literally no ships around, boring as hell.
For some reason this beta either brought A LOT of people in, or something changed because i was running into ships after 5 mins.

  • @darlain probably a bump in server population coupled with how huge the hype was leading into Beta. I was telling people to get a preorder in so people could jump in and it’s safe to say everyone here has pestered at least one person into getting the game before Beta started and maybe one or two who got the game preordered since Beta went live.

With streamers doing lengthy uploads, it will be hard for anyone online to make it through the weekend without having heard of this game. Positive side is it’s serving as a good stress test for when actual release rolls out.

  • @darlain
There is no problem with the game, it is designed that way.
Rare's aim for player encounters was to happen every 30-45 minutes, as i said they don't want it to be constant battles. If the server size was to increase, then the PVE side of the game would suffer too much as a consequence.

  • @naoshadowpaws Still i don't see how this solves the 16 person per instance issue.

  • For those defending the current server population, it's great you had some fun encounters. However, I don't think any harm would come from doubling pop size. Think about how fun a loaded population could be - alliances, sailing in formation, etc. We need to come together to have devs increase population in game.

  • @logansdadtoo lol, this game's PVE is a joke. Sorry.
The only thing that might actually be a threat are the skeletons maning the cannons at the forts.

Also, like i said, having an encounter every 30-45 minutes is a horrible move by rare. That means that unless someone camps you at an outpost, you're pretty much safe to deliver a lot of chests.

  • @daros808 Those that are happy with the current size will probably not want it doubling though matey :( they are happy to be plundering gold and completing riddle quests.

You will never be able to please everyone if you tip the scale too far one way...

  • I had no problems finding players, my friend and I 2 manned an attack on 2 four man ships and wrecked about 5 two man ships, stole loot and made a killing.

Rare's really missing opportunities with every single aspect of the game tbh.

  • @darlain
Thats the problem a lot of people have in this game!! It's not all about the fighting or the threats!!!!
There is so much more to it, but i suppose if all you want to do is fight, then this probably isn't the game for you!!

  • @logansdadtoo Enlighten us then, what is there more to do?
Don't mention the quests, because they are fetch quests with slight variations. It's worse than a JRPG.

  • @Darlain
I cannot go into details, as the Pioneer program is still covered by NDA.
I have been playing the alpha & beta for nearly a year now m8 & i am always finding new things to do & ways to play. Yes, the quests we have tested so far are only basic quests, but with more factions to be added that will soon change.
We have only seen what Rare has wanted to disclose, for all we know there could be 10 different factions & many variations on questing, delivering & treasure hunting!
Rare want you to be able to play any way you want to play, so they have to cater for everyone & have to keep the balance right. At the moment they are managing to do that very well in my opinion.
Not everyone is like you my friend, we don't all want combat all the time, i am quite happy with things balanced like they are.
Like i said, Skull & Bones seems more like what you are looking for & SOT isn't going to be anything like that!!

  • I very quickly found that when I had a crew that knew what they were doing, we ran into a lot of other people in a very short amount of time.

When I had a crew that was clueless, we rarely if ever ran into anyone.

    This comes down to:

    • More experienced crews move faster, cover more ground, and are more likely to run into someone
    • More experienced crews spend less time below decks and generally have more eyes on the horizon, meaning they're more likely to spot a ship when they do run into someone
  • I was in the game yesterday three times, in one of those lobbies i barely saw anyone nearby, but a few ships far away in the fog, probably avoiding contact.
In the other two sessions i was sailing with friends and we had several encounters with other pirates, so there are players out there, maybe it's just a bit of luck or the players aren't equally distributed over the lobbies.

Unless it was mentioned in this thread, we did have to protect our chests to deliver them to the outposts (which didn't work out all the time) or just got randomly attacked.

@darlain said in Abysmal lack of players. Increase server population?:

Look at the game like any sandbox game: explore the islands and caves, climb to the top of the Galleon Grove Outpost and dance, fool around with gunpowder barrels in the taverns, look for easter eggs, enjoy the details in the world and the views.
Basically just do whatever you want, explore what ever looks interesting and - yes, this is a part as well - attack whoever you think you can defeat.

It seems to me like Rare really worked on those details as well, also i do realize that some players just don't care for those things and prefer pure progress - that's most likely not the only point of the game.

  • The more I play this game, the more solidified I feel that this size map should house around 25 ships. Not every sighting leads to a battle. If there are always 5 or so ships on the horizon at any given time, some players will attempt to attack them, but that creates avenues for the victims to flee into other ships for help or diversion. And with that many ships, players can more easily form alliances to have the power to complete PvE quests without much worry.

More ships per server will not equal more forced combat for those that don't want it.

  • Yesterday together with friend we had two or three slope sessions on which we frequently had battles with other slopes. To extent that one voyage had more battles than islands to visit. Then we decided to go for galeon part. First few tries we had to leave due to r******d mates without mic joining our session but at the end we ended up in someone else session who was at least little talkative. That session took us at least 2 hours and we had encountered no other players at all!

  • @seztrenn I think they should have some PVP servers which then have the higher populations, so its all out sea battles all the time.
This would then allow the people who just want to do quests/explore have the smaller population servers with chance encounters

  • @logansdadtoo Yep, im not buying all this "i can't go into details" thing.
If i buy a game i want to know exactly what im buying.
No man's sky flashbacks all over again.

Also, i've seen several "Pioneer" people complain about the same thing that i'm saying so...

  • @darlain
Then don't buy it til release m8, then you'll know exactly what you're buying. The same as how you'd have bought most of your other games i suppose!
This is a beta test, an unfinished product, not the final release.

  • I feel I find players all the time. They are waiting at the outpost for people to come and hand in their chests.

  • Had a game last night where my buddy and I couldn't get away from seeing ships while trying to sell our 16 chests. Everywhere we went was a damn ship. Finally found an outpost that had no one within view distance of a spyglass and were able to unload our haul.

  • Saw a bunch of ships when we played earlier. A four man one shortly after we started and at least five two person ships as we traveled around. Don't think server population is an issue. Noon on a Friday and we were seeing ships roaming the seas. Would be an issue if people were reporting playing for hours and seeing no one.

  • @naoshadowpaws
Do people come into the server as people leave? I only saw an outpost camper who chased me around and then never saw anyone else the rest of the time (maybe just over an hour the whole game).
