Gameplay is fun but content is lacking

  • Title sums it up pretty decently. The gameplay so far is awesome, the riddles are pretty challenging sometimes, even just locating the island to sail to is pretty interesting.

    1. PvP in this game is interesting, fighting other ships is solid (though i play on the 4 man ship and see ALOT of 1 - 2 man ships, i think you need to force people to pvp against same type ships.)
Even if you you aren't fighting other plays the interactions alone are fun
"WE DONT HAVE TREASURE MAN YOU DONT WANT THIS YOU DONT WANT NONE!"
"ALRIGHT MAN WE COOL WE JUST GONNA GO PAST WE CHILL WE CHILL"
    2. Treasure hunting is fun for a time but can get a bit tedious without the right group of guys
When you have 3 other guys each working together its amazing. 2 running the sails 1 steering and the other calling directions is surprisingly cohesive. But when you have 2 or even 1 person without a mic or with no will to help its pretty annoying. Thankfully for the moment you can just bail and find a new crew no problem
    1. Seriously... where is the progression and content? If this is even close to what you are gonna release with its not at ALL worth $60.
No customization, Items are trivial, voyages cant be your whole schtick. With the track record of "Betas" I'm sure I'm not alone in fearing this is gonna be the final game, hell even the map isn't large enough to warrant random exploration. Rare would have to be hiding 50% of their game in order for my hopes to remain high. a pirate hub would be ideal, mini-games would be a decent time waster, NPC Ships would be fantastic, PVE Scenarios would be fun (like events that happen every now and again where you and maybe 1 or 2 other ships battle one large "Military" or "pirate ship" where coordination plays a key part.
Rare we need some more info... is this the WHOLE game? 90%? 80%? This game currently isn't worth the price point. Maybe $30 or $40 sure.

  • Is it possible to play with random people? Or there are a lot of enthusiasts to ruin the session?

  • @fyodeem I believe it is possible to play with random's just not like a match making sort of way. I think they have to be on friends list. I'm sure the forums will be flooded with crew members wanted.

  • I hate to say it some will pay 60$ what others are paying for way less. Think Pubg or FBR..
I don't think there is anymore they can add without changing the whole game. realistically at this stage in the game with the launch date they have what could they add that would change the game for you?

Really...? Do you really think we saw EVERYTHING they're developping in their studio...? So in God of War, there are just 2 types of enemies and some cinematics...?

Seriously, there's a lot of things we didn't see yet.

  • @grievous32 The game launches in what? a month and a half? they didnt show off any new improvements. map size. objectives... seems like if they had more to show they would let us beta test it for bugs before release... chances are THIS is the completed game

  • a lot of things were intentionally cut from the beta. and somebody data mined files from the beta and there's a boatload (heh) more things in the final release.. like.. a lot.

  • @achaboot
HATE to do this but BETA.....
You know, years ago gamers would love to get in a beta and be grateful, now a lot just moan about things.

  • Beta has limited content.

You can’t judge the entire game based on the beta content. Beta is just stress testing, getting bug feedback and letting some more players dip their toe in the waters of Sea of Thieves.

The alphas had more content than current beta, and alphas didnt have all the content of the full release.

I think you are a bit too quick to judge the entirety of the game just yet.

  • @face-0-o because apparently there's not enough map?

By definition, betas are as close to a perfect game as the devs can get it while trying to iron out small bugs and issues right before release. You're confusing beta with demo.

  • @cwarrick66

I find the map to be somewhat small. I know I'm not alone on this either.

  • @face-0-o definition maybe, but it seems to most developers don't care about that and simply release what they want as a beta.

  • @cwarrick66

clearly, which is another issue in itself.

  • @face-0-o I don't see it as an issue, they aren't even obligated to release a beta.

I don't want to cast too much shade here, but it sounds like you're trying to find negatives a bit too much.

  • @cwarrick66

Nope, I'm just not 100% sold. I want to love the game, have really enjoyed playing it, but I have my doubts on longevity, and if the desire to pick up and play will stick once I've been to every island, bought all the cosmetics, sunken numerous players and leveled up my faction association. After 2-3 days of playing, I'm already a 31 for gold... I'm dumping the time in, and getting joy from it, but I'm trying not to play fanboy or critical skeptic just yet.

It's ok to have an objective and unpopular opinion, which is why they have forums open to feedback.

  • @face-0-o Definitions or not; this beta has less content than alpha which has less content than full release.

I understand you expected beta to be a richer experience, but you also need to understand that this beta has limited content by design and thus cannot be reviewed as a whole game.

  • @ghroznak

Regarding what I can and can't view is entirely up to me. It's not a full game, and I played the alpha clearly, so I know all too well what is and isn't present. It doesn't change my opinion much knowing I'll have a few more factions to fetch for, if that brings you any sort of comfort.

  • @face-0-o said in Gameplay is fun but content is lacking:

Okay then. Go ahead, review it as the whole game /shrug

  • @ghroznak

Once you've invested as much time into the game as I have, we'll see where you stand on these subjects.

As I stated, I am not viewing it as a full game, but am viewing it from what I've played both now and months ago as at least 75%-80% of the final product. Which is why I'm not 100% sold on it. By all means, buy it, enjoy it, etc. That's entirely up to you and I respect your opinion on the matter. I just don't have to agree with it and vice-versa.

  • @grievous32 there's not only a lot we didn't see, no we just might have seen 20% of the game! They still have around 2 months developing stuff. Hell guys, this'll be a nutcrack of a game!

  • Luckily I have a free month of game pass so I'll be using that to decide whether to purchase or not. Free month of sea of thieves to decide if the content is as lack lustre as the devs are letting on and the beta is showcasing.

The game looks gorgeous and the four player ship play is very entertaining but I see myself getting very bored of it if all I have to do is aimlessly sail empty ocean using my "imagination" to bluster the experience rather than the product actually providing it for the massive price tag.

If all I have to do is go to island, dig up chest, cash in, go to island, dig up chest, cash in. I'll be hard passing spending 50 Uk, 60 Us or 100 Canadian on this.

Very hopeful title but price tag should be in the 30 margin not AAA.

  • I think we only see the whole platform of game in this close beta...
as you all know Rare made a great platform for unlimited contents...
you know even if with these limited content game be released I'll buy it...cause I know this SOT platform with this great community will get unlimited content...many years...
we'd never seen such great game with this huge potential of content...
hope rare developers do something like World of Warcraft content....for this game...
then It will be Game of the century :X

Eh, I probably shouldn't have quoted his post in retrospect.

  • @lasvvall

Have you seen any sort of info given by the devs to insinuate rolling updates and content will be a thing though?

Genuinely curious here, as I've seen nothing to indicate they will. As far as I know, a "full-release" is a game with no plans to change core content. DLC is possible... but knowing M$, they will not permit free DLC, so how much are you willing to pay for this content you're dreaming of, if it even happens?

  • @face-0-o
this totally depends on Rare studio and Microsoft policy...
"They will get what They give"
as I said if they release unlimited content day by day on a kind of Regular updates Sot definitely will be the greatest game for years....but if They fail...then...
I'm a bit worried too about contents....contents are the key for this game

What you're describing is an Early Access title with steady, progressive updates and features released over time as they are developed. This is not an early access title.

  • Yeah, this game sorely lacks content and I get what this game is going for, an open world multiplayer sandbox where the players make the game but it just doesn't work for me and I guess a lot of the people on this forum, the game severely lacks in content, the gameplay loop is so tedious and boring. The game is 7 weeks away and if the beta is like this then the full game will not have much more.

  • @face-0-o
you are kind of right about it..
but they can do something like MMORPG games...
with kind of in game stable and fair transactions they can get M$
and free content will raise this M$ for them...
as we can see in lots MMORPG...even those Free2Play ones

  • If you guys like me had watched every video on the SoT youtube page and actually done your research before jumping to conclusions you would know that the beta is only 10-15% of the whole game. There are videos (behind the scenes, tales of the tavern) where Devs clearly say they don't plan on releasing a once off game, there will be many updates in the future.

Also FYI the final map has 3 zones for different styles and levels of play. cant remember exactly but there is a desolate map zone for experienced sailors which is super rocky and treacherous, there is a jungle zone which is balanced? and the sandy shores Carribean one which is for skippers and noobies!

Anything in writing, or a resource that you can link to that backs your claimed figure of 10-15%? You realize alpha was probably about 90% of the total game, right? I've also seen nothing to indicate updates aside from bug fixes ahead. As I said, DLC is possible, but Microsoft does not do free DLC. Valve attempted to release free DLC for titles like Garry's Mod, and Left 4 Dead 1/2 and Microsoft wouldn't allow it. Doubt anything has changed over the years.

Edit: Your linked video shows "regions" and describes them which are already on the current map. There's just no borders on the in-game map dictating where one region ends and another begins. You won't be able to sail to the edge of the current map to enter a completely different world map from what I can tell so far.

  • @face-0-o sorry but aren’t you confusing demo with beta?
