I don't see what the problem with this game is

  • Good morning mates! First of all i would like to tell you i'm just a noob that has only played an alpha session and it's approaching now to the beta for the first time. This post is going to be a praise of the game, unlike the 90% of the other posts in this forum.

I hear people are upset due to the lack of content, and i cannot understand why? What do they mean? Are they serious?

These are the impressions i have collected so far.

    1. It is a freaking beta.
And, you won't believe it, but it is actually an improvement over the alpha. I know lots of people are simply looking at the new guns, but there is much more: first of all, it's actually very polished. Server connectivity issues are no longer a problem and i personally can play just fine with friends, without experiencing a single crash in 6+ hours of gameplay. I know they cut some content from the Alpha, but they said they were going to do it months ago! This beta is supposed to be a playable-polished version of what the final game looks like, it's not the full game, and as such, it is not supposed to have all the factions and all the voyages. Don't believe me on the improvements? Just look at the water getting on the deck during a storm, the feedback rumble the wheel gives while in a maelstrom, or how the compass spins. These are crazy-level details that give us an insight on what rare has been doing with this game in the last 4+ years. The running animation has been redone, compenetration glitches have been fixed, the skeletons are starting to get sneaky and wait to ambush you, there are a lot more things that were changed, but nobody notices, because "omg, the new rifle!11!! camper!11!!!!1!"

    2. The content isn't actually lacking.
This however depends on your personal taste, you can complain all you want, but if you look at things Objectively, you know there's lot to do.
First of all you have 3 main companies to work with. People don't know, because thay just played 1-2 voyages and then quit, but things start to get more spicy with high-level voyages. Right now i'm level 6 on golden hunters and i just unlocked level 5 voyages: those are double the length of a base voyage and are full of storms, skeletons, traps and riddles. My guess is, and it has been confirmed by rare itself, that more complex mechanics will be added to high-level voyages, which will become actually a challenge, later on.
I don't know how the other two companies work (mainly because during the alpha, all companies were bugged for me), but if you just look at the video on youtube, from sea of thieves designer, you'll have an answer to all of your questions. There is going to be a lot of variety, that is for sure.

    3. There is nothing to do? No, there is little to do other than the voyages: this is perfectly fine.
However let me ask a question: is any other MMO full of variety? I read posts of people comparing this game to minecraft or to Destiny 2: are they for real? EVERY other MMO right now is as complex (if not less) as Sea of Thieves. Period. Every online game is like this: PUBG is the same thing done all over again every new match, every online shooter is just as monotonous as it gets after 2 matches. People are also complaining about the simplistic combat, but even there, i don't see the problem: do these people forget about the complexity of call of duty ww2 online?

I think people misunderstood the meaning of this game: it is a pirate simulator, where the main objective is having fun, and no more! And this is all the game is about: having fun! And if you try it with friends, instead of watching youtube/twitch gameplay, you'll understand what i mean!

In conclusion: i would like to congratulate with the people at rare for the work they have been doing: the game looks incredible so far and i bet they'll going to turn an already great game in a classic. Just wait and see.

In fact, if you leave Destiny kids, sony fanboys, people who only know of the game because it is top 1 on twitch, delusional no man's sky fans, Rare haters (iT wAs BeTtER wHeN NinTEnDo HAd tHEm111!!!1), Microsoft haters and people who simply don't like to have fun, every other impression is universally positive.

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 Hear, hear!!! Sever issues, content bugs, etc are all the POINT of a Beta. So with that in mind, this has been a success!!

I have had lots of fun both leading up to the game with dreaming up ship names and pirate names and then great fun during my maiden voyages. The graphics are wonderful, the character movement is very easy, the world around you is just terrific. I’m a jolly pirate, happy as can be. Well right up to the point of being chased all over by that huge ship and her experienced Krewe of Scallywags, but that’s not The Devs fault, that’s the point of the game!! LOL so I am now going in search of a Krewe and it be revenge in me ‘art now Matey!

    Thanks RARE, great job!

Look for me in the best Taverns ashore, at the rum barrarel on board, and on the open seas, me gamer tag is Tipacup O’Mead, but me mates call me Tipsy. TipsyOMead

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 yep I agree, but I still want more features. You might say that it’s still in beta, but then there’s the fact that over the last year, they only added about 10 new features, some including as small as a bucket to bail water. Not hating, really excited for the game, just Saying

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618

I couldn't put it in better words than what you have just said! Great Game so far and looking forwards!

  • I think a lot of the fun of this game will lean on well-tuned matchmaking. Last night the fun for my crew of three was managing sloops that were harassing us while trying to get our booty back to an outpost. Since the game won't have any AI controlled ships it's paramount that there's the right amount of tension without out-and-out trolling. It'll be hard to pull off. So far the core systems of this impress me and I'm really looking forward to how they iterate on it.

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 You could not be more right! I felt exactly the same as you. The game must be running at 5 to 10% of its full capability but you know what? It only excites me more to think that it has so much more to come!

  • @seenplastictruk Yeah, i know there won't probably be NPC controlled ships, and that's a letdown, but there will be fortresses controlled by skeletons, and i'm really looking forward to it. I also think they'll probably add skeleton ships: it's a feature that's way too good to miss out.

  • @dark-shadow9056 You, sir are perfectly right: wishing for more content is perfectly fine, right and comprehensible. It's the way you wish for things that does indeed matter!

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 I understand where they're coming from on the lack of ships. They want the focus to be on human interaction, strategy, and shenanigans. That's where the game truly shines. Maybe they're afraid of the slippery slope as well. Once there are AI controlled ships (shipping lanes and what have you) there might need to be AI pirate hunters, which adds a sort of law-and-order aspect to your decision to attack a ship. That and they have to put in complex AI to run the ship. I assume it's a question of dev resources; either add and tune features that reinforce the core loop or add extra side features to broaden your player base.

  • I made it to lvl13 with gold hoarders and had a lvl 10 mission that sent us to 5-6 different islands (I forget how many because the rum is gone). It is indeed getting far more complex than the initial missions but still no big whoppers yet. I'm having fun.

  • @seenplastictruk You're perfectly right: my idea was something like this: "You do a high-level voyage, where you have to find a rare chest, and while you're returning to an outpost, an npc skeleton ship spawns and start to follow you to take their chest back, or something like it." This could be applied to pirate hunting missions too (order of souls i think) . I know it's not simple to program, in fact i'm not expecting this at launch, but it could be an interesting feature indeed!

  • @sn0w37 I haven't made that far yet, 5-6 islands? That's a lot! It would be way more interesting if they added more cursed chests types!

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 No, that sounds awesome. They could tie this Ship of the Damned with your Order of Souls rank. The higher that rank the more chance you're hunted by the wailing spirits of the damned. In terms of the PvP it would be awesome if your crew was fighting off another ship and this ghost ship rolls up and everyone has this unspoken truce while they fight off hordes of skeleton pirates.

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 It would be awesome to have skeleton ships cause I'm playing alone so I'm getting smashed by crew with 2+ players. It would be nice to have some enemies that I could really fight. hahaha. Not complaining though, otherwise it would not be called Sea of Thieves. hahah

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 couldn't agree more.

  • The thing that gives me hope, is the simple fact that the content complaints are not new and yet Rare still seem very comfortable to just hint at things when asked directly. Clearly they have a plan, and there is stuff going on behind the doors that we have no clue about because they actually want to surprise their players.

First time playing today, went 10 hours straights and was still raring to go when the maintenance came up.

  • This whole situation where many people on Reddit keep saying that "this game isn't worth 60$, 15$ is all I would pay for this, there's no real progression system where your guns and ship get better and all we do is completing voyages and fighting other pirates" is so cancerous.

I feel like most of the gamers out there don't play older titles and don't care about their history.

Does anyone remember when Left 4 Dead came out and it only had 2 gamemodes, 4 campaigns that lasted one hour each on default difficulty, 5 weapons, 2 items, 2 grenade types and 5 special infected? Despite all of these raw numbers people were okay with that 60$ price tag because guess what? The game was FUN on it's own. There was no need (or room...) for forced progression systems with rewards that divide the playerbase into high level players and low level ones, no need for cosmetics.

It seems like nowadays the game isn't worth 60$ unless it's full of stupid filler content and features that cater to gamers with short attention spans and those that need to be rewarded every few minutes with something that gives them an advantage over others in one, big, stupid rat race.

  • I agree good sir there will be issues , there will be bugs, it will not be complete. After playing for a bit I simply fell in love with the game and community so far. It looks great and can only get better as the game come to fruition. People need to be patient , stop looking at negatives that with time will be fixed

  • @culturallemur That's what we talking about! The game has so much too come yet, there are a lot of possibilities to always enhance it and to make it better. Sea of Thieves its fun already the way it is and quoting the developers "The golden age of piracy is yet to come!"

  • @fuzzyh1ghland3r Well all I can say its a Beta and for those less fortunate than us who don't have it, will have to wait on the ships launch in March! I for one cannot wait to play the finished product. I am having so much fun on the beta, and I can't understand why people are complaining!
OK shipmates am off for some more fun on the high seas......hopefully see some of you out there!

  • A good chunk of content has been cut for the beta, I think we are seeing perhaps at most 15-20% at most. And that's without future updates and contents. If people feel the game is too empty or not enough progression, well, just wait and see!

  • Great post, I agree with everything you say entirely. I would forward this to my friend to try and change his mind( he went in for 10 minutes and said it was s**t and left, without even trying to play properly) but alas I think he's too far.
This game is amazing and the Beta optimisation is fantastic, the game looks amazing and it runs beautifully.

  • After the long struggle to get into game yesterday, it was well worth the wait. While much of the world seems empty right now. The world is massive. I'm not at all worried that the full game has much more in store to fill it, plus room to grow to keep filling it. What I am worried about is players who think they're coming to PUBG meets Waterworld. I already ran into players camping an outpost jumping around like Pirate-Halo pros and probably waiting for their ultimate to build or a super weapon to spawn somewhere on the island while they killed another player over and over again for no reason. Base camping to steal loot is one thing, it's a pirate game after all and "thieves" is right there in the title, but to me it seems like an adventure game is going to attract some adventurers who aren't there looking for team-deathmatch.

  • Right now, my buddy and I are just completing some voyages to see how the system works (even for us Pioneers some features are new or have been changed). We usually just switch off, complete a voyage or two and then hunt a ship.

You see the game is insane when you can get a friend to play with you, once you start getting used to the routine needed the ship (in our case the sloop) is like a little miracle. We're at the point we can dock straight against the docks at the outposts without damage, turn the ship in combat in such a response that the enemy usually panics.

It's always him at the helm and me running around doing the sails, damage control, firing and spotting enemies. Usually all at the same time.

For the current content the game is a blast and I can't imagine getting the other 2 factions that offer different playstyles or, you know, sea monsters.

Besides, it's all about the adventure you make :)

  • I played for a couple of hours with friends and a match made player, and it was fun. Played a couple more hours solo and it was fun too. The ship fights are definitely easier with a crew, and I did my best not to engage when I was solo because I wasn't familiar enough with the controls to feel like I could do everything plus combat on my own, but maybe today.
Even solo play, just adventuring without fights, was a little perilous. For instance, diving into a shipwreck and finding sharks between you and your ship when you try to surface really got the blood pumping.
The long voyages were never go-here-get-this repetitive for me because I was constantly surrounded by distraction, and things that I just wanted to check out.

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 I agree with you 100% this game is a good one for sure. Really enjoying the beta right now!

  • I agree... An opportunity to try a new, hyped up game for free will bring in a great many players with a wide range of preferences and tastes. SoT, or the narrow slice of the game that we've been allowed to play so far, will not be to all of those tastes...
Everyone has played this game for free so far. If you don't like it, cancel your pre-order & save your money.
If you're undecided, cancel your pre-order & wait for the full game. Watch your friends playing or go on Youtube and make a fully informed decision. Still don't like it, keep your money. Decide that you do like the fully formed & realised product that Rare have produced, & will continue to build, then hand over your money happily & enjoy!
Rare is giving us only a slice of what the end game will contain. They are doing us a kindness by letting us play, for free, ahead of release, and we are doing them a service by giving them data and feedback about the areas of development that need work, improvement and further implementation.
A forum full of people saying, 'It's s*** because it wasn't what I expected', is unfair and short-sighted, and it doesn't help Rare make SoT any better, and it is damaging to the really positive community that I was happy to become apart of only a few short weeks ago...
The beta will end, the clamour will die down, and we will get further updates and teases before release. I'm hoping that the negativity will diminish, and the people who are dissatisfied will vote with their feet and leave SoT to those people who want to enjoy this lovely game instead of tear it down...

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 The lack of basic features and content variety is worrisome becaues, even if it still is a beta, we are less than 2 months away from launch. I would expect an almost complete experience in a beta so late. It feels it has been build just as a server stress test.

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 a

  • @xyrris I hope you are right, but having a beta with the 15-20% of the content just 2 month away from launch isn't making you worry about the game?

  • @f2a6b6i1o199618 great post my friend I couldn’t agree more with you!!!

  • @akudesyn said in I don't see what the problem with this game is:

I can totally see your point, but it depends.
As it regards my way of seeing things, a beta is a demo, nothing more, nothing less. In the meantime they are doing stress tests, and that's ok for me, but i think, as other people said up there, that the content available on the beta is something like 15-20% of the full game.

  • Not sure why all the nay saying but this game is great. I have had a blast so far with me random pick up crew of misfits.

Glad one positive post exists in this Sea of Trashers :)

This just isn't true at all. Generally speaking most people couldn't even log in yesterday. And the website was down most of the day. You also had lag issues, people getting disconnected. And 9/10 times you would error out going into a game. Simply look on these forums and you will see a ton of issues with servers.

Don't believe me on the improvements? Just look at the water getting on the deck during a storm, the feedback rumble the wheel gives while in a maelstrom, or how the compass spins. These are crazy-level details that give us an insight on what rare has been doing with this game in the last 4+ years.

It does looks better than any of the Alphas did. I will give you that one.

Skeletons are on easy mode, and seem to be just as dumb as they always have been in my opinion. Again, this is just your perception, not actual facts. Glitches are not fixed, people are still falling through their ship and last night my hands were missing all night. I also picked up a grey de-coded treasure chest. A simple look at the bug threads and you will see there's still a lot of the same glitches, and this is open to the public so you are welcome to go check it out.

    1. The content isn't actually lacking.

They are extremely grindy, you are simply looking at them through rose colored glasses because you are a hyper fan. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, I am glad you are enjoying it, this community needs people like you and I do not look down on you for this at all. In fact a commend you for it. However, it doesn't make what you're saying suddenly true. I watched 4 maybe 5 streamer yesterday, ranging from 15K-70K viewers, all of them ultimately said "Okay, but what do we do now? Can I get better gear? Can I get a new ship? Is all this just for gold?" They were wanting more, but the game didn't offer anymore so they were disappointed. And with their disappointment came their audiences disappointment. Now thankfully some community members let them know there was much more to come in the full release, but the damage had already been done. And there isn't 3 companies to work for right now, you are mistaken there. That is planned for though at release.

    1. There is nothing to do? No, there is little to do other than the voyages: this is perfectly fine.

HAHAHAHAHA! No no no, its not perfectly fine. There needs to be more to this game for it to continue to have an audience. That is business class 101, and basic common sense. Its like you telling me I have a cut on my forehead, and instead of doing something about it I walk into the public and everyone gasps points at me. They put this game out there for the world to see without its clothes on, and everyone is laughing at it saying "See! We told you so!" Just for some insight, most of the gaming community agrees that SoT is going to be a very content lite experience, and this beta just solidified that belief.

However let me ask a question: is any other MMO full of variety? I read posts of people comparing this game to minecraft or to Destiny 2: are they for real? EVERY other MMO right now is as complex (if not less) as Sea of Thieves. Period. The paragraph below you said this was a pirate simulator not an MMO? Anyhow.

    Minecraft:

    • Building

    • Mining (duh)

    • Questing

    • Boss fights

    • Fishing

    • Taming

    • Crafting

    • Character Progression

    • Enchantments

    • PVP/PVE

[None of these are in SoT currently]

    I don't know squat about Destiny 2.

This is not a first person shooter...this is a MMO (or open-world multiplayer adventure game). PUBG isn't a MMO, its a FPS game....You cannot compare the two. PUBG is also $30, about what SoT is worth if you ask me.

I think people misunderstood the meaning of this game: it is a pirate simulator, where the main objective is having fun, and no more! And this is all the game is about: having fun! And if you try it with friends, instead of watching youtube/twitch gameplay, you'll understand what i mean!

No, it is marketed as a open-world, multiplayer, pirate themed adventure game. Most companies view this genera as a MMORPG, but since Rare doesn't like to refer to that tag it is what it is. But its certainly not a simulator game lol. Go play Microsoft Trains, that is a simulator game.

You mean the majority of the gaming community? Yeah, that's a good marketing strategy. You just named off some of the largest gaming communities the world has ever seen, you most defiantly want them on your side if you want this game to succeed. Also, a person could also use your own argument against you and suggest you are an extreme fanboy unwilling to see the issues the game has. But I won't use that argument against you, I am trying to be fair ;).

Not in the slightest, because they cut it from the beta doesn't mean they don't have it!
