Pirates did NOT use cutlass swords

  • So I was doing some research on different things on pirates, but I noticed one fatal flaw... that the Cutlass was made in the Napoleonic Era, and not the early 18th century. So turns out that instead of the Cutlass, pirates used different swords, such as Hanger Swords, falchions, and the dusack sword. Which all of them are similar to the Cutlass but aren't exactly that.

the Hanger swords were mainly used for hunting (If I am correct) and I got no idea how they were in pirate hands.
the Falchion is a pure cutting weapon that can rip through cloth and leather, and do maximum damage to skin and bone (Might beat the katana.)
And there's the Dusack sword, a combo between the Saber and the sidesword, and are military grade weapons in Germany and Russia. I can see how they were made into the sailor's life.

So basically... our whole life was a lie

  • My google results are suggesting otherwise :p

late 16th century: from French coutelas, based on Latin cultellus ‘small knife’

Edit dont know. Lot of conflicting info. but found this http://www.thewayofthepirates.com/pirate-weapons/cutlass/

  • @uvg-reign Oh, well I am now confused. Sources say that both the cutlass was after 1710 (Age of pirates) but also during the 17th century...

  • i think its ok either way there wasn't a kraken in the sea either lol

  • @chosen-predator hey now, my great-great-great-great-grandfather would disagree with that statement!

This is a good link full of primary sources that show pirates used cutlasses, even before the golden age

  • The game has a lot of fantasy elements, I don't really think using a non-period weapon is a huge detriment in a game where we kill skeletons come back to life! ;)

  • @chosen-predator you don't know that sir.

The tale came from some where...

  • @CheatingPirate
A cutlass is a short, broad sabre or slashing sword [...] a common naval weapon during the Age of Sail.
    Source: Wikipedia

  • pirates also didn't shoot themselves out of cannons, just sayin' :)

  • @cheatingpirate

This is an original boarding cutlass from around 18th century apparently -

    And another one here -

And a website I love about all things pirate including weapons!

  • @ethnine right you are matey

  • To be honest, at the end of the day. A sword is a sword no matter what type it is.

  • I, for one, would like to see an axe or hatchet in place of a sword. These were commonly used, by the crew, as well because they were used to repair the ship.
