New item for repairing sails

  • It would be awesome to see bundles of cloth used for trading in Merchant Alliance Voyages. It would make sense in the game’s economy since customization is such a big focus.

But how cool would it be if cannonballs could blow holes in a ship’s sails, and we could repair those holes with the cloth? Damage to the sails would slow the ship and repairs could leave rough patches of different color.

The main problem is access; you can’t just walk up to any part of the sails like you can with holes in the hull. I think there would need to be a rappelling device in the crow’s nest to allow players to be lowered out and down across the entire sail. Of course a Galleon has two other masts without a crow’s nest, but the same principle should work.

What do you guys think? Any potential problems or thoughts for improving this idea?

  • @summer-scholar I would say: Nice idea, but Im not quite glad with your acess solution. I dont know if this is better, but I owuld say that you need to lower the sail and then you can fix the hole.

  • @summer-scholar I think different types of ship damage is a good idea, but the biggest problem I see with it is that it can already get pretty hectic during a storm or battle with all of the different tasks that need to be done, and so to include additional tasks they'd have to increase the crew size and/or make the tasks quick and simple. Not to mention It would make sloops completely unmanageable.

  • @rufustheblakman So, we would need an easy/fast way to fix these seperated damage or a way that this damage doesn't interfere in a battle. I haven't seen anything about storm yet, so no opinion there :(

  • I am hoping there will be something in place to slow down ships youre chasing/being chased by

  • The devs honestly did a pretty good job of keeping us busy. With bailing water, Trimming and adjusting the sails, checking the map, and just steaming the ship you have a lot to do. Plus you always need someone in the crows nest and repairing holes in the ship during storms and battles.

There is a lot to do and it’s a great idea but I see it as being hard to balance. It would make pvp very easy because the sails are large and one shot would almost cripple a ship. If you had to lower the sails to repair them it would make it even easier to catch some one on the sea.

To me this idea would just make pvp and the surprise ambush to op. All you do is wait around a corner for a ship shoot there sails then blow holes in the ship.

  • @uvg-reign I think the exploding barrels they showcased will probably be used to that effect.

  • @zombie-p1ague Ah gosh, you got a fair point there. This will be my last comment in anything gameplay related, I realized that I cant get this feeling without playing it.

  • @jcmdeadpool noooooo please make comments give us your thoughts and tell us about what you hope to do or see.

That’s the fun of this game is the adventures. Tell us about crazy things you wanna do or adventures and battles you wanna have with friends.

I personally have not gotten to play the game yet sadly I was not part of the alpha. But I have Friends I have made here that did play the alpha. I love to listen to stories of adventures they had. There is a lot more skill to this game then people think. It’s not easy being shot out of a cannon I hear lol

But please just because I said it might not work. Don’t ever stop telling us your suggestions that’s what this community is about. We are all here to be pirates and to fight and pillage along with our friends. Every one here wants to make their story and sing there tale.

Let us all have amazing adventures and crazy stories, let us all become PIRATE LEGENDS!

  • @zombie-p1ague You are a true legend.

I wont stop making suggestions, never. But I dont think that I can be a great help in these gamplay ideas. Because you have to play the game to know how often you hit/dont hit a sail.

  • @jcmdeadpool soooo what the games not even out yet. Things are always changing right now New features are being implemented that were never in the alpha. So don’t feel bad ok mate. Your input is always valued never forget that.

  • this is going way to far in the wrong direction, as a result everyone would just camp on their ship in order to repair, however I like the idea of slowing down the ships on impact, but this should apply on normal hits to the ship's body already.

  • @zombie-p1ague I dont feel bad :D I just dont think that I can be that helpfull here. But thank you very much for this wholesome messages :D As I said, you are a true hero.

The effects of normal combat already slow the target ship down, naturally. Their crew cannot be everywhere at once. How much the ship is slowed down depends on how that crew can multi-task under pressure.

  • @summer-scholar I agree, it makes sense for sails to get holes and such because if cannon fire. I thought it would be in the gane when I saw the trailer. Seems to me that the only thing that really hurts your ship are holes below sea level. The holes you create shooting at a ship above sea level doesn't really do much maybe besides making you sink faster if you are sinking.
I hope they make the ships a bit more destructive :) ;) :)

I think that sail damage is an absolute must in a pirate game. Rather than get into complicated solutions for accessing the holes on the sails, I would solve the access problem this way:

You should not be able to repair each hole on the sail individually. Rather, you should simply have to replace the entire sail once it's so bad that it is significantly impacting your sailing. So you would stock up on say "linen" in your ship storage, and then when your sail looks like Swiss cheese, you should have the option to "ditch it" using the existing pulley. Then you should have to climb the mast and once there, be presented with a "replace sail" option which would lower the new sail in place. Done.

  • @sprucetexas689 yes 👍, also row boats!!!!!
