So about the Double(oon) cap

  • I actually like the idea of having a cap on the number of doubloons that you can have at any given time.

That said, what is the point of ALSO capping the number of voyages you can do to earn doubloons?

I understand you don't want it to get out of control again, but simply capping the number of doubloons you can have in your wallet would have been enough.

Coupled with the fact that this is only available for 4 days a month? Feels like another missed mark.

  • Hello, I noticed this as well. I did 3 runs with friends, and on the 4th I only received gold instead of doubloons. If there is a daily limit, unfortunately it won’t be possible to buy all the items.

It's not even a daily limit. It's a a limit for the whole weekend.

Without doing a tremendous amount of stealing over the course of these 4 days (read: getting insanely lucky finding people doing these things), there absolutely is no way to earn enough doubloons. It would take several weekender events to earn enough...and by then something might get rotated out and/or more things added.

We went from having away too many doubloons straight into but being able to have enough... And penalizing people who can't play on the weekends on top of it.

  • @sweetsandman So, for now, the plan is to go after the Reapers Chest until we get some answer.

  • Got to love test runs.
Next time, they will "improve it"

  • WOW! Talk about missing the mark in the biggest way possible. I was generally enjoying this update. I was so excited. I have been having fun. The Duke items are amazing. Then....... then..... the "Doubloon voyages" the limited time, limited quantity doubloon voyages... Don't offer doubloons. Are you serious with this? Like, actually serious? You guys are amazing with this. And not in a good way. I don;t think you could have ruined this any more.

  • the point of the cap is because you can only earn doubloons from 3 voyages for your crew. but you could alliance up with another crew by having 2 ships on a server. have that 2nd crew give you 12 crates or whatever and you just sell them all for doubloons. so the cap is so you can keep farming it over and over. [mod removed]. the limit of 3 per player. if you have alts just delete your alt. make a new character and get 3 more. only potential issue is the alleged forced maiden voyage on making a new character. if this prevents you from simply joining a friends ship then it might be too tedious an extra step to be worth it. it was already too tedious for the infinite voyage of luck

  • @roborob-r66y so what you're saying is: Rare made this a really poor experience for everyone who isn't an exploiter.

    Great. Fantastic. Nice job, Rare.

  • Yeah, the maths don't add up when it comes to doubloons.

Completing all the challenges and voyages get you about 1300. Let double that to take into account next months weekender, so 2600. Plus 400 for the season pass (I think it supposed to be 425, but we'll round down a little for convinence). So 3000

The total cost of items in Duke + Larinas store is 7000. So we have a shortfall of 4,000.

That would require 20 doubloon crate steals over 2 weekends. Or 160 Reaper's chests sold with a Grade V emissary. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd have to spend nearly all my time playing the game on those activies. The joy of this game is the variety on offer and this goes against that.

Now that's a worst case scenario assuming you want to buy all the items. Many of us a lucky enough to have already unlocked some of them. The cap itself isn't a massive issue, the lack of doubloon activities is. If the value of the Reaper's chest had have stayed the same and Ashen chests, keys, tombs etc. kept their doubloon value it wouldn't be so bad. But as it is currently, it's pretty tedious.

Also, this was brought up repeatedly during insiders. The original numbers and time limits were way way worse. But there's still room for improvement. One idea I liked was to use a doubloon reward to revive some dead content - skull of sirens song anyone? I also like the idea of bringing back the daily deed system to offer a small amount of doubloons each day.

  • Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would you want to grind all required doubloons in one or two weekend ?
It seems they want doubloons to be kind of a rare thing, not something you could grind out (even if the grind is harder).

As far as I know, Larinas store was available before the reset (so I had all unlocked there already).

Duke store is 5000 total, wich does not seem like an unreasonable amount either (it's a lot, but it's not like they're expecting people to get all of it in one go I suppose !)

Why should we expect them to add content to the store faster than they add doubloons to the game ? Lets just wait and see !

On top, didn’t they talk about „toxic behaviour“ in their last community update and that they will take action against it?

Don’t get me wrong, in general I don’t think that stealing among players in a pirate game is a toxic thing to do. But until now stolen treasuries could easily be earned again by simply restarting the same voyage or doing the same world event once again.

Now, by limiting the amount of voyages / earned doubloons, they incentivise players to steal a currency which, at least in a high amount, can only be earned from time limited voyages during a time limited event. Said currency ist the only way to buy highly desired time limited cosmetics - old and new ones.

… I‘m not a sociologist, but that doesn’t sound like a proper way of reducing toxic behaviour to me.

  • We told them over and over again the prices were too expensive and the doubloon gains too limited. Plus, this is literally all the events we get for a month. one whole month.

  • so from what im reading here is there's no way for me to get anymore doubloons? ive done all the weekender stuff apart from .play jolly good fellow..Ive tried it twice and it will not unlock for me.(yes with 5 pirates) im sitting on 1450 doubloons which means i cant buy anything this weekend i would need to go sell 5 reaper chests. and then sell another 150 chest just to get dukes items? the only items i could buy due to already owning the other items. why have a cap if i cant even get anywhere near it? I did not mind Losing my 48k doubloons but now im Peeved off at how these monthly events work

  • They should perhaps give 4 or 5 voyages but still only pay out 3 in doubloons - just in case a player gets YOINK'd and they have a chance of still making the maximum dubs earnt.
I don't think there needs to be a necessity to buy EVERYTHING right away so not too bothered about the price of things.
I can understand limiting the amount of doubloons/voyages available each weekend as way of keeping the economy under control. Only those who play the game legit are hamstrung by this sadly.

Agree there should be a reasonable way to earn doubloons outside the Weekend.

Reaper Chest being worth 10 seems overly miserly. Make the Reaper Bounty also worth doubloons - and retain doubloon value to ashen chests etc - even if a reduced amount.
Reaper Chests seem to be despawning as I get close to them - maybe just bad luck.

  • I suspect it's to prevent the usual cheese people do by using alt accounts to put down additional voyages etc.

  • I have had a few further thoughts.

Another game I play somewhat regularly is Helldivers 2. It has a cap on all the in game currencies and resources. A very simplified explination: Generally about every one or two months new cosmetics and weapons are released. To unlock these you need to spend medals. The cap on medals unlocks about 1/3 of all the new released items. You have to play the game a reasonable amout to gather enough medals to unlock the rest. This is obviously to prevent stockpiling of medals, and just buying all the new stuff right away. I assume there is a similar intention regarding the doubloon wipe and cap. I don't have much of a problem with any of this. The difference being in Helldivers, medals are obtained simply by playing the game in a normal way, so hitting the cap is relatively common and by playing a reasonable amount of time you can save towards whatever you want. Currently in SoT, some doubloons can be unlocked once per month, the rest of the time the only way to get them is by a very tedious reaper chest grind. A cap makes sense if the currency can be gathered at will.

Some more maths. I'm going to scale the current numbers up to reflect an entire season as the current season is only 2/3 of what we should get in the future

Let's make the assumption a player has all of Larina's and all of Duke's cosmetics already unlocked (I imagine this is a small percentage of people, but I am aiming for an extreme example). Also let's assume they want to buy all the new Duke item's each season. I won't take any steals into account. Feel free to add whatever number if steals you feel is reasonable

So, 3x weekenders gives 3900 doubloon. Plus 425 for the season pass. For a total of 4325. 3 new Duke item's will cost 4500. Still short. So unless you steal a huge amount (I have stolen a few, but finding people doing the voyage has been quite difficult) or exploiting with alts or other dubious methods, the cap isn't really going to affect most people.

In short, the cap isn't really doing anything as the currency is much too rare for a "normal" player. Caps makes sense when the currency is readily available. I'm happy to keep the cap, but we need a few relaible ways to generate a small amount of doubloons. Another idea I have had for this is something like 1-10 doubloons for every level of renown you generate after completing the season pass. It would keep people playing and let them do whatever they want, be that voyages, tall tales, hourglass, world events or whatever. Variety of tasks is everything, forcing endless FotDs (or other reaper chest generating activties...) is kinda dull.

  • My friends are furious with the doubloon limit from the limited voyages that we are given for the supposedly limited MAIN event/weekend. After receiving the measly 18k gold instead of doubloons, they have all crashed out and quit the game for good. I really wish we would've been listened to by Rare. This weekender has been a disaster imo and it's sad to me that Rare has basically made this game even more into a job now, to the point that people I used to play with every day have now quit in frustration.

The event is too short for an entire ACT!!! The amount of doubloons to receive are wayyy too little/ the prices of the items are way too high. The Voyages are extremely boring (no one liked the Smuggler's Voyages in the first place) and it really once again caters to streamers who can justify sitting on the game all weekend to get the exorbitant amount of doubloons.

They lost the plot on how to make things fun. The grind is just too tedious for the payout. It's just not worth the time anymore.

  • After receiving the measly 18k gold instead of doubloons, they have all crashed out and quit the game for good.

What is the reason to quit a game? Because of what here?
Because you can't stockpile doubloons anymore and purchase everything down the road when it's released? Or because the boost voyages arent working, but we can still cash in doubloon rewards and get pennies down the road... What is the reason? If its the other, and they quit the game over it...then they had bigger problems prier to the second act with the game, this just soft nudge.

The Voyages are extremely boring (no one liked the Smuggler's Voyages in the first place)

Boring is better than a lengthy, boring, trivial nonsense one.

it really once again caters to streamers who can justify sitting on the game all weekend to get the exorbitant amount of doubloons.

Or the ones who sat at the delivery location and sunk every ship that came by, losing their 200 doubloon reward to a man with black kegs. :D

The grind is just too tedious for the payout.

What grind....you pick item up and deliver it. 200 easy.
Again, this seems more excuses to quit and complain than the game being super easy and not worth the time :/
You didnt have to do it, your not forced to do any of it.

  • @thamb0 said in So about the Double(oon) cap:

Uninformed AND immature. A great combo.

    The Voyages are extremely boring

Each to their own but like all PvE in this game the THREAT of PvP makes it pretty compelling for me.
I play solo and had 4 BBKs to defend against predators. Thankfully I was unchallenged.
I guess a lot of folk stack the odds in their own favour by sailing on brig/galleon and lament the game is no challenge.

The crowded to do list and brief timeline of the Weekender is a negative here.
Would be hunters are all busy doing their own challenges and events rather than hunting chests in all likelihood.
Challenges/Events for a week and fireworks/doubloon voyages for the originally intended Weekend would be the sweet point methinks.
More respectful of peoples irl time also.
