Increasing Sandbox Interplay

  • The sea of thieves' sandbox is incredible. there are so many neat tools that can change the way you play the game. and yet with all these tools there is little interaction between them. below I have a few ideas that would make the sandbox more complex.

    Traps update

    • You can now expend a spear to add a lethal spike to a trap. this would be ideal for boar hunts, as a single one of these traps can take out one of those big pigs. The speat tip, however, makes the trap glint from a distance, and the thing can't be buried, so it will be difficult to trap another pirate.

    • You can now set up a wraithball in the trap, just like a throwable or cursed cannonball. the trap & wraithball are both inventory items, so this would be pretty unbalanced... but also... really cool.

    • You can now set up a horn of fair winds in the trap. triggering the trap now deals 0 damage but launches the player upwards with all the force of the horn at once.

    • You can now put ashen winds skulls, obsidian ashen wind skulls and skulls of siren sorrow loaded onto traps. these devastating traps envelope the victim and the surrounding area into a massive damage zone.

    Keg Update
By interacting with a keg of any type while holding a pocketwatch, you can now change the fuse time. 0s, 5s, 10s, 30s, 60s.

    Harpoon Gun spear interaction

Picking up a spear while holding a harpoon gun loads the spear into the gun. running with the gun in hand or stashing the harpoon gun drops the spear. perfect for taking down skeleton lords, boars, and other pirates!

    Cannon Update

The magical expanding steel our cannons use also amplify magical effects, although ammo is still limited

    • Loading ashen wind skull/obsidian ashen winds skull amplifies flame effect.

    • Loading horn of fair winds can turn a cannon into a powerful wind blaster. the sheer amplified force of wind can make cannon rowboats extremely fast. Also, this effect applies to cannons of rage, allowing someone to set up a thruster behind their ship

    • Loading tridents into a cannon increases the speed and charge time of the bubble.

  • Traps.
    Remember…accidents happen.

I like the direction you’re thinking in here, but some of this would get out of hand pretty quick.

The sandbox in Sea of Thieves is already one of the best parts of the game, and I do agree it would be nice to see more interaction between tools. Little mechanics like that can add depth without needing a whole new system every season.

The keg fuse idea with the pocketwatch is actually pretty good. Being able to set different timers would add some real strategy to keg plays instead of every situation using the same fuse.

Where I’m not really sold is the trap and cannon stuff. Loading things like Horn of Fair Winds or Ashen Winds Skull into traps or cannons sounds funny, but fights could turn into complete chaos really fast. One of the reasons combat works well is because it’s still fairly readable and skill based.

The harpoon spear interaction is actually kinda cool though. Using the Harpoon Gun to launch a spear could be a fun utility thing without completely breaking the flow of fights.

So I like the general idea of sandbox tools interacting more. I just think some of these would need to stay a bit more grounded so the game doesn’t turn into total madness every time crews fight.
