Pepperidge Farm Remembers

  • Hi, all! Remember when the PvP sweats were saying the introduction of Safer Seas would ruin the game? And remember how that specifically didn't happen? Pepperidge farm remembers.

So, now that we've established that the PvP community knows nothing about what will and won't ruin the game, why are we continuing to take their opposition seriously, when it comes to lifting all restrictions on Safer Seas?

My friends and I have been enjoying the game, doing tall tales, and mixing it up with Gold Hoarder and Order of Souls quests here and there. But for us, we can see the end approaching, because as soon as we finish all tall tales, and hit rank 25 in all factions, that will be it for us. The ability to rank up further, unlock Pirate Legend, and use captained ships are never going to be worth the trouble and displeasure of dealing with PvP sweats.

Why are we continuing to pretend that Safer Seas is just a tutorial, when it's clearly capable of being an independent version of the game? Especially now that we're able to create multiple characters, it seems very possible to create Safer-Seas-locked characters, and allow us to PvP with our friends on completely private servers.

    Let's do it!

  • @iiipewnackiii I don't know, a lot of Safer Seas proponents said that adding it would lead to an explosion in the number of players. That didn't happen, so I guess they don't know anything either and we should discard their opinions?

  • @d3adst1ck - No proponents of Safer Seas wanted any of these restrictions. You can't implement half measures (if you can even call them that,) and then pretend that the results are conclusive. Let's run a real test: remove the restrictions, and then see what happens. Unless of course you're worried that the proponents of Safer Seas might have been right all along? ;)

  • @iiipewnackiii It doesn't matter what you or I think. If Rare wanted to expend the resources and money to allow everyone to start up their own server, that's their prerogative. You can't just unilaterally declare that some group "knows nothing" and not expect it to get thrown back at you.

Safer Seas, according to people asking for it, should have lead to an avalanche of people joining the game to play it (up to level 40). That didn't happen, so they adjusted the rewards to full gold and lowered the reputation limit. Still didn't see any increase in new players who shouldn't have noticed any difference in game play until they hit the limits. It doesn't sound like there is a market to go any further at this time.

I imagine that restrictions will probably get lifted at the end of the game's life for a last hoorah for whoever is left playing it.

  • @d3adst1ck - That's clearly not true. If Rare didn't care what people like me thought, they would have never went through the trouble of creating Safer Seas. And if Rare didn't care what people like you thought, they would have never placed restrictions on Safer Seas, to funnel in fresh meat in High Seas, to please the PvP sweats.

And my point is, that won't work, because people like me will just quit as soon as their progress gets blocked in Safer Seas. So, it's not a mystery why we've seen no explosion in player population, because half measures simply don't work.

  • That's clearly not true. If Rare didn't care what people like me thought, they would have never went through the trouble of creating Safer Seas. And if Rare didn't care what people like you thought, they would have never placed restrictions on Safer Seas, to funnel in fresh meat in High Seas, to please the PvP sweats.

If Rare cared about what people thought, we would have Arena.

Also Safer Seas is a tutorial for a PvPvE game, the entire component of the game relies on the interaction of other players. It's the Sea of Thieves, not Sea of Friends.

  • The game design and intent for Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure, and it always will be. Those who wish to play in the confines of Safer Seas will always have the option but we will not bring the rewards and activities in line with those of High Seas when many of the restrictions are in place due to the risk vs reward factor that is inherent in Sea of Thieves - removing any risk means rewards must be balanced accordingly.

Safer Seas will act not only as a safe space for our Tall Tale players but also for families with children who just want to pirate, for people who want to play the game but learn the ropes and it will organically feed into Adventure mode, keeping the player pool there healthy and upskilled as they've learned the mechanics.

This is not only useful for new players but also families and players with accessibility needs - the whole game suddenly becomes available in a way it hasn't before, letting them naturally progress to High Seas and become a Pirate Legend. SoT has grown a huge amount in 5 years and it can be fairly overwhelming.

The borders put in Safer Seas mean that to experience the full depth and breadth of the game you will have to hit the high seas BUT if you're playing with your family you don't have to, you can just enjoy the game and have fun as a family.
