Warning before server merge or option to delay

  • Hey!

I used to play SOT all the time and just recently came back to grind out all the new commendation! I play solo and just today I had an epic battle over a fort of fortune..the other crew and I went head to head..we both sunk but I stayed on the island. I finished the fort by myself...hid the chest of tributes..loaded all the loot in a separate location..etc! The other crew came back, thought the fort despawned because I moved everything and they left! I snagged a mermaid to grab my boat, ready to get the loot and BAM...server merge. Hours of fighting over this for everyone to lose it! Apologies for the story but I wanted to give context on where the suggestion is coming from! That being said I have a couple suggestions to hopefully help people in the future:

Suggestion 1 - Before a server merge is active, give a server warning that it will be shut down. That way those who have loot make sure it's on their boat before the merge happens, or they don't get on their boat right away lol I woulda swam or row boated the fortune chest if I knew the game was about to boot me.

Suggestion 2 - Loot in this game has player tags on them. That's how the game knows if you "stole" or "donate" something. When a server merge happens update any loot with your tag on it to move to the new server with you.

Suggestion 3 - When the server is shutting down and starts merging people. Allow players to "delay" the merge temporarily. So like in my case, I could have sailed the 2 islands over...got the loot..THEN merged instead of just losing everything

Suggestion 4 - Don't tie the merge to when you are on your boat. Allow it to move you and the island you are on also. I know that's likely more difficult to do but it would help protect the loot hidden during battles

I remember running into this issue like 5 years ago when I was playing, losing loot not to sinking or pirates but to the game merging me, I merged like 3 times just today!

Hopefully I spark something! Maybe not exactly my ideas but something close to protect loot! It's why we sail after all!

  • If you've touched the loot it should merge with you should it not?

Did you go back to the loot location and it wasn't there? Pretty poor if that is the case I agree.

  • As said above. Did you go back to claim the loot?
Normally once you claimed or touched loot. It comes with you as long your within reach by few islands.

    Need more context

  • The server merge happened because that other crew left the game, this makes it harder to warn unless you're saying add an x min timer with the warning before you get merged.
Some players abuse certain mechanics to prevent a merge and this would further enable that. Same with an option to delay

It sucks to lose stuff, but you got a good story from it that you won't forget anytime soon and honestly that's worth more than loot anyway. You won that fight, whether you sold the loot or not that hasn't been taken away from you.

It only merges loot within a specific radius around your ship. There might be an exception for World Event loot but you need to be within the event space for it to count. If your ship sank, like OP's did, it will only merge loot around where his ship spawns at which would probably only be whatever was washed up on the beach closest to his ship.

I think if he buried it then it might have stayed, because he'd have a map bundle on his table, but I'm not 100% sure on the mechanics of burying and merges.

  • I've had it happen where we've sunk a skeleton ship, get a server merge, and the loot from the ship is still floating around where we sunk it, so I'm not sure how it happens, but if you went back and all your treasure was gone, I'm sorry that happened to you and they need to take a second look at the system.

Not a bad take IMO, but loot is more important to a lot of players.

I'd consider that before shooting down the idea because some players would abuse it.

  • The amount of loot I have lost to server merges makes me sad. I don't understand how they get so bad about it. I finished a skeleton fleet and as soon as the last galleon sunk, I got merged, and lost the loot from finishing the event. It floated up, then I got merged, and it disappeared.

  • @pc-monkfish Yes I did go back to reclaim the loot but I confirmed it was gone! I had 99% of it stacked in a pile to harpoon when I returned with my boat and the chest of fortune I actually swam out to a rock in the water on the outer area of the island. That was gone too :(

  • @burnbacon My goofy self just loaded onto the game to make sure I get the names right lol The fight took place on Sailors Knot Stronghold and my boat respawned on Chicken Isle I believe! I had 99% of the loot stacked on the back side of the island to make it easy for me to harpoon while the Chest I had hidden on an outer rock. Both were gone when I sailed from Chicken to Sailors Knot to get it!

  • @hiradc I figured the delay or warning might get abused :) The point was to hopefully spark a different idea that may actually get implemented! I do think using the player tag on items to bring things with to a new server may be a viable "fix" since the server it is currently on is going down anyways! Not like anyone on the closed server needs it 😝

I do agree it makes for a good story lol Woulda been better to say not only did I win as a solo but turned the loot in too 🤣 Instead of "I had this epic fight, got the loot, and then the SOT gods stole it from me" ha ha

  • @d3adst1ck I thought about burying it after the fact! In the moment I was still reeling from all the fighting so I was focused on rushing back to get the loot I left. Didn't think about burying everything as it would have taken too long and I risked having the other crew come back. That's where the original idea of the warning of a merge came from. If I knew the merge was coming I would have switched gears and buried everything to protect what I had! Instead Davy Jones has it now!

  • @europa4033 I appreciate your comment! That was very nice of you! It's unfortunate that it happened but it gave me a good story I guess! Just popped in here, not to complain but to hopefully use this as as a way to implement things that will make the gaming experience better for everyone!

  • @dank-jimb0 It's ok! I figured one or more ideas of mine would get shot down! That's why I added multiple suggestions for the same topic! Doesn't matter how many ideas get shot down! All I hope is that the Devs maybe see this and at least think about ways to make this better! Just trying to protect others from going through what I did!

  • @potatosord I'm so sorry I LITERALLY feel your pain! It's one thing to lose the loot to other crews or because of sinking. It's another when it's right in front of you and then the god of SOT sends you away!
