More meaningful engagement on social media

  • Howdy!

Firstly, I understand that there is a healthy amount of posting done now between Rare across all their social media and posts are finally looking like they’re syncing up properly (BlueSky still needs some work). I’m very appreciative we get updates often and there’s a little engagement with some people, most often via X (previously known as Twitter), but honestly? It’s not enough.

To me, more of an effort has to be made to regularly engage with the community across all of the platforms so the community, no matter where you are, feels less disconnected. I’ve spent some time on the official discord server and getting to interact with the devs on a regular basis is fun and very informative, but that feeling of connectivity doesn’t go beyond that. Of course there has to be a balance struck on social media, but it needs to be more than the almost zero engagement we have now.

Community weekend is a great example when Rare can engage with people on a meaningful level and it’s always fantastic. I’d love to see more of an effort made and give people a reason to engage with campaigns like #BeMorePirate or #SoTShot or just generally tagging Rare in posts. I’d also love to see other users posts shared and highlighted to show that Rare actually see what we do and aren’t just saying they see it.

I hope we see some sort of change soon and it’s for the better. Thank you! 💚

  • You know what would make people more likely to interact with SoTShot? If it wasn't rigged to always give it to SoT streamers and YTers. There is no way to fairly win SoTShot 10+ times. They play favourites and it's not fair for the average person. We haven't had a reason to Be More Pirate in ages. Give us a reason and stop playing favourites with people who are acting as free promotion for the game.

  • Social Media - especially Twitter - is a cess pool.

I don't blame them for not stepping in too much.
If you are highlighting random posts from folk you don't know what skeletons they have in the closet and peformative controversy generated as a result.

  • @potatosord Plenty of people participate but I’m talking about the non campaign based type of posts that Rare would benefit from engaging with. Show the community that they’re not just using it for information but as a tool to communicate directly with the people who play the game.

  • @heslashthem The last thing I want to do with this game is make MORE ACCOUNTS for MORE SITES that actually don't have anything to do with Sea of Thieves.

I'd rather Rare communicate here more, to be honest, instead of telling me that they'd rather communicate via some trillionaire's personal crapshow.

Agreed, social media in general are useless, the forums for a game is more than enough

This seems the right reaction imo. This forum is a safe space, monitored by mods based on the regulations set by the devs. Here is the right place to communicate with the fan base, as unfortunately the social media has become a fetid cesspool.

  • Completely fair feedback that the forum is just as important. I’d include it in the mix then, cause you’re right. Engagement should happen in all places where the community exists.

  • I'm glad they are at least taking BlueSky a bit more seriously as a platform, included in #SoTShot, and we do get more updates there. In general though, I think they have taken a step back from interacting with external "wild west" social media where they don't have moderation control. That seems deliberate and, honestly, I can't blame them for that given [insert vague gesture at everything]. They can moderate and manage their own Discord, and it's seen as a very neutral space, so that's why I am not surprised that is where they focus.

I am a bit disappointed that the forums have seemed to dwindle in terms of activity and interaction, but that feels like a sign of the times... old style forums like this, where I spent my formative years, are in decline and things have moved onto more immediate forms of engagement. It's not necessarily better.

I prefer places like these forums (that could be nostalgia) but I feel that certain policies around content don't help foster discussion. In particular, I have been very critical of the necro rule and how it's often applied to subjects that are still very, very relevant. Forcing folk to make new threads on the exact same topic doesn't seem very efficient, and the older forum members just get tired of seeing the same topics and having to reiterate points. Moderators only apply the rules as instructed, so I'm not criticising them in that regard. I just wish it was more flexible, like it has been on other sites (especially when it comes to the Troubleshooting sub).

Anyways, that's my two cents. I'm more of a lurker in most places these days though, and I've learned how to use that "DISCARD" button more. Often, it's just not worthwhile engaging.

Wish I could upvote this more. Social media is something I tend to avoid at all costs.

It’s a shame but I think you’re right, which is really disappointing if true because I can speak from experience that the buzz people get when Rare replies or shares your post is great. You feel seen, it brings a smile to your face, it keeps you going and gives you another reason to play the game they’re wanting you to play.
