This game is giving new players advantages

  • I was playing a hourglass match, and this reapers pajama player who is obviously new since they had the progress pride flag and some weird glowing set, I literally had the advantage, their ship was on fire, they crashed into me, I fired two scatter shots and a few cannonballs into their ship, HOW did I sink faster than them? Rare, please fix your broken game.

  • Not to mention, I wasted 30 minutes just for that to happen. 30 minutes using my supplies, and 30 minutes of my time.

  • @thunderdrago205 what their cosmetics were meant nothing compared to their skill. Crashing into someone’s ship does more damage than using some tier 1 making balls and fire that goes out immediately when water is thrown on it. Moral here is never underestimate your opponent.

    Nothing to fix.

You also had 30 minutes of fun. Try again and learn from your mistakes.

    they crashed into me,

maybe they had fewer holes because THEY crashed into your ship, not the other way around? I think you know that ships will be damaged differently if they crash into each other, but still..

  • @tesiccl I'm not angry, it just wasn't fun because we were doing the whole "Spin until the other one gives up because the fight is drawn too far, hours even"

  • Nothing broken here other than your expectations based on cosmetics. Some people will intentionally wear things like reaper pj's to be underestimated (not that I think that's what happens here). When you ram someone your bowsprit into the side of their ship they get a lot more holes. Phuzzybond did a video awhile back maybe check it out.

  • @hiradc Thanks for telling me, I didn't know about this, I thought both players took major damage if they crashed into each other, I'll try and find his video.

  • As everyone said, can't judge just based on their cosmetic choices, they could be vets on fresh accounts or just like the cosmetics specifically. Also i assume you crashed and then just boarded them without ever checking your own ship?

In a crash, the turning ship often takes the worst of it because it gets more holes.

It doesn't sound like a new player was at an advantage from the game, just that you got overconfident and misplayed. It happens but you learn from it.

  • You can't judge people based on cosmetics. Or at least, you shouldn't rely on that judgement for situations like this.

I am a Day One player who flies the Progress Pride Flag (because I'm an ally) and frequently goes full Lodestar or Prehistoric Plunderer set, with some basic cosmetics. I don't do this to fool anyone, I just like the look.

Before you start assuming things about the game based on one interaction, you should probably be asking questions about it first.

"Forum post title: Does this game offer combat advantages to new players?

Content: I was in an Hourglass match with someone I assumed was a new player based on [assumptions] and I seemed to sink faster than they did. Here is how it played out: [retelling of encounter]. This made me wonder: are there boosts for new players in the game to ensure they have a more positive experience? If there is, that might be unfair in a setting like Hourglass. Thanks for any info!"

  • 100% certain the devs have not put in buffs for new players. Quick sinks occur when ships ram, damage between to two ships are not even.

You do know that there are players who use certain cosmetics to look new but are actually experienced....

However, this is a skill issue and likely your limited knowledge of the game regarding ramming and water management.

  • @dank-jimb0 As mentioned earlier, I do admit, after years of playing this game, I do not know that ramming affects the ships differently and not evenly. I'm grateful someone told me of this.

Not sure how close your ships were, but if you rammed and stayed that close, it’s possible they were bucketing water onto your ship as well. If you were downstairs repping/bucketing and they were up top tossing water onto your ship, this could lead to a quick sink depending on your holes.

Cool so you'll fix your original post then instead of blaming Rare to fix their game?

  • @dank-jimb0 I don't know how to edit my post tbh

  • Skill Issue

  • @boeing7876500 This post has been resolved. No need to comment.

Just noticed this. You can edit using the helm wheel next to the timestamp for how long ago you posted.

  • Why is everyone having a go at this person? They admitted they weren't aware of all the mechanics involved. That acknowledgement is more than can be said for a lot of people in the forums who will back themselves into a corner and argue till their dying breath. Let's move on.

  • 'obviously new since they had the progress pride flag and some weird glowing set'

Would love to know your logic for this assumption.
