Bounties and Other Suggestions

  • I've been playing SoT for about a year now and love the game, but I still have frustration with the PVP aspect of the game and also frustration at trying to complete commendations. First, I understand that this is not "Sea of Friends" as some especially immature sailors will tell you, but sometimes you just want to set sail and have a calm session. Also, don't tell me to go to Safer Seas. We all know it's a terrible way to play. I think it benefits the community when new players aren't scared away because they can't battle or fight at a high level.

    1. Introduce a Bounty System. If a boat sailing any Emissary faction is sunk by a Reaper (or maybe any other faction), the Captain can issue a bounty from their own coffers for any amount that would pay out to any boat sinking the offending ship. It would make sense that that faction would rightly be angry about losing a shipment and so the faction will match any bounty offer. When a ship has a bounty on it, it will be seen on the map with the amount shown below it.
This allows retribution for the aggrieved player AND puts a target on the aggressor, sending PVP players after them so they can have the PVP battles they so desperately want. If the bounty sinks more hunters, the payout can keep increasing for a larger payout, like a mega-lottery.
There should also be areas where any combat doesn't allow bounties, like around Forts and Camps where it's a given everyone will be fighting for loot.
    2. Some/All outposts should be a safe haven. Not all outposts have defenses, but some place like Port Merrick should have citizens manning all cannons so that if a ship is attacked and seeks haven, the cannons will fire at the attacker. The attacker can keep trying to sink the other ship, but with greater difficulty. There should also be no fighting on the outpost, especially on Sanctuary. If a player is caught fighting, a local constabulary would throw you into the brig for a short amount of time, enough time for someone to steal stuff off your boat.
    3. Level 5 Hunter's call should show you where a Shrouded Ghost would be on a map, if it happens to be on that server. It's been hidden long enough that it should be easier to find by now, but with specific conditions.
    4. There should be a bundle buy of all the supps from the Shipwright. This would help speed up starting the game.
    5. Move Briggsy's Quest to the Mission Table. It just gets in the way during battles.
    6. For Open Crew, players should have to pick the faction they "prefer" to play with so they can get matched with specific crews. A player wanting to play Reaper is probably not going to want to spend the night fishing.

    That is all!

  • Introduce a Bounty System

Emissary IS the bounty system. And unlike these suggestions to target unwilling players; It's totally opt-in on the bounty target's side!
No need to add a system that forces a bounty on someone who may not want one.
    Plus:

    • What happens if the target logs out?
      Do they remove the bounty?
Is it permanent until claimed? (Which would be horrid).
    • What happens if they server merge?
They are now on a server where no one knows of the Bounty.
    • If the poster logs out or server merges?
They are no longer on the same server as the person they put a bounty on.

Some/All outposts should be a safe haven.

    No they should not.

    • I camp an Outpost. Now, if I start a fight outside it's 'area' & am losing; I can run back into it to become immune to PvP.
    • Now no one can stop me from stealing the loot of a ship that just docked; It's a 'safe haven' so I can't be attacked or killed.

some place like Port Merrick should have citizens manning all cannons so that if a ship is attacked and seeks haven, the cannons will fire at the attacker.

    No.

There should also be no fighting on the outpost, especially on Sanctuary.

Why? They are not safe havens.

If a player is caught fighting, a local constabulary would throw you into the brig for a short amount of time, enough time for someone to steal stuff off your boat.

    Ah, so now I can:

    • Body block people.
    • Throw vomit/water on them
    • Start bailing water ONTO their ship to sink it.
    • Block the door on their ship.
    • Steal from them without reprisal.
    • Set their ship on fire with firebombs (I did not attack THEM, so it's not 'fighting' as per these made-up rules)
    • Set their ship on fire by over-cooking some food (It's not a weapon, just an 'accident'.)
    • Block access to the OoS NPC or other NPCs in a small door way
    • Steal their ship
Or other things I can't think of, but a greifer can. And THEY will get arrested if they retaliate! Cool!

Oh yeah, and imagine chasing someone for their loot, they are about to sink, and they get into a 'safe zone'. Now they can repair and bail and turn in treasure without fear of attack!

  • Level 5 Hunter's call should show you where a Shrouded Ghost would be on a map, if it happens to be on that server. It's been hidden long enough that it should be easier to find by now, but with specific conditions.

No such thing as “long enough”. For some of us players. I’m always seeking it and keeps me more on a server. To be given it because “it been long enough” wouldn’t be justice.

I've been playing SoT for about a year now

That all good. Glad you been sticking around. But I been here since “launch” and I hate to see the ghost become another easy pray

  • Every game has a version of the bounty system and SOT has its own as was pointed out previously.

The bounty system you are proposing is the same used in GTA and that didn't work as intended.

  • Bounty systems turn into griefing systems.

    I like that idea.

Game should not have safe zones etc, it's a open world game where anything can happen.

Getting thrown in a brig/jail, so someone can sink your boat and steal your loot while you can't do nothing. Sounds good, not...

Want to avoid combat, avoid other ships on your own accord. It's not hard to do.

  • @guildar9194 You bring up good points about the "safe haven" idea, but I think with good programming you can make something work. Mischief like throwing buckets of water or even getting on an opponent's boat would be counted as aggression an dealt with appropriately. And I didn't really mean ALL outposts should be safe havens. Merrick is the most obvious in my mind. And the idea is not that mischief is not allowed, but that it would create an additional challenge for aggressive pirates to overcome. You could still steal loot and fight, but it would be like GTA where there would be an appropriate response.

As for bounty's, I argue the emissary system is NOT a bounty system. The bounty's would stay permanently on a boat until it sank even through server jumps and logouts.

  • @captdirtyoar Uh it's really hard to avoid ships. I've had ships chase me across the entire sea for a couple captain's skulls i happened to pick up. It's not fun and it's happened enough where I have the Golden Shores loaded up for a long drawn out escape. Not everyone loves PVP and Safer Seas sucks, so having some "outs" for players who like to mind their own business would be a welcome addition in my mind.
