Thalassophobia - Season 15

  • I really disagree with folks who ask for extensive development time be spent on the plethora of phobia's out there for each game they come across. It's like buying a submarine game and asking for the water to be taken away bc its scary.
Don't play games that prominently feature your particular phobia.

Or... you know... sort it out. Therapies are a thing.

But it's ofc always easier to ask for someone else to adjust to your needs, and play on a sympathy card.

I bet at least 80% of people with those prominent phobias (spiders, sharks, heights, depths, etc) have never been to even one therapy session. Let alone actually put in an effort to try to cure it, or at least improve it.

You're def not the only one who disagrees mate.

I'm not against accessibility options. I'm against adding accessibility options that affect core mechanics of an already established game which result in an imbalance, to cater to super small minorities that won't even put in an effort first to help themselves.

  • @pengu3816 again, I wasn't aggressive but keep pretending, and woops looks like you forgot to read some responses properly, because @siegnard and I are not even close to the only ones giving simple feedback that is basically saying this is not a good idea. Way to cherry pick and continue to cause an issue because someone disagreed with you and now you gotta pretend they're being aggressive.
btw here are my two responses before you went off about me being supposedly rude:
"Sea is in the title of the game...
I would wager the majority of the player base would rather keep everything how it is in relations to the water. I feel Rare has done an outstanding job at making the Seas feel unique and beautiful. I think it would be a shame to implement these features that you are asking for and would only take away from what they have created."
"I did read the post a few times, thanks very much. Now I'll just be blunt. This is a bad idea. You're asking Rare to make huge changes to a system almost no one is asking for. It's dev time not well spent."
Please point to the spot that made you get so upset that you had to name call and say I'm being rude, aggressive, outright malicious, and that I clearly don't know anything about game design, (another insult and assumption).
Because both of your responses have been nothing but rude and outright petty, I would ask you first look inwards before calling someone these when as others have stated, it was valid criticism.

  • Forgive me if someone already mentioned this and i missed it when reading through.

There is already an accessibility setting for those suffering from this fear. One that lets you float regardless of if you fall into the sea or jump in into it on purpose.

[Also can we please keep personal attacks and arguing back and forth out of this.]

@sweetsandman I have replied above to both points you raise a) regarding dev hours, b) regarding it being the name of the game

If your point about it being the name of the game (which really only applies to Subnautica) is that there are other games that have offered accessibility options, those games you referenced all have one major thing in common...they don't have PvP. No balancing to worry about.

As an example in SOT, there's an accessibility toggle for disabling screen shake that was added YEARS after the game came out. Aimed at motion sickness relief, it was a solid addition to the game for those that suffer from it. But...guess what, it provides a slight competitive advantage when aiming cannons and tracking shots. So...what do you see now? Pretty much everyone who has any combat sense toggles it off to get that slight edge in combat at the expense of Rare's immersion vision.

PC players looking for a slight edge figured out early on that they can reduce their graphic settings for the water and get an edge in combat.

Any sort of accessibility addition to the game is going to require balance testing...not because it's not a good addition to the game for people with certain needs, but because meta-gaming has a tendency to cause an uproar in this community. If there's an edge to be had, it will be found.

For your sake and others, I'd love to see it done. People have been begging for increased FOV options for years as an accessibility option...but here we are still at 90. I just wouldn't get my hopes up is all I'm saying.

  • It's called immersion therapy. Jump into an ocean game and go look straight down into the depths. If you can't do that then this game isn't for you. It's like asking for a horror game to be less scary or a fighting game to have no violence in it. Get over it or don't play.

Should they remove the Motley Mariner costume because Coulrophobia exists? Or the Wicked Web cosmetics because Arachnophobia exists?

If I had it my way there would be sirens that could grapple you off of your ship into the water with kelp and drag you deep down to drown you. I want more scares in the seas not less. I want the kraken to behave like it did in Pirates of The Caribbean with it snatching people off the ship without remorse or warning. I want an assassin style skeleton to be in game that sneaks onto your ship like a tuck player and stabs you in the back should you enter a barrel or interact with the map or anchor. I want the seas to be terrifying from a pve and a pvp perspective. That is how you make a game fun in my experience. Minecraft is a kids game and it still scares people all the time. Why can't a game about curses and pirates have a little fear added?

The jellyfish aren't even meant to be scary from what I can tell, they look peaceful and majestic. Go look at Ark's jellyfish if you wanna see something more intimidating.

  • You want them to make core design changes to the game, on the off chance that someone who isn't currently playing it, might return.

Can we have a road version of Microsoft flight simulator for those that have a fear of flying?

I don't like horror games, I don't go to the developers and demand a non horror version....

@siegnard I called him aggressive because he was being aggressive everyone else bar you and him have been constructive giving points where it may or may not work, both you and him seem to be taking the mick out of a simple point I raised/suggestion I made

You do realise no one here had been aggressive except you that throws accusations because you just don't like what you hear, right?

Constructive criticism doesn't mean everyone's being a Yes-man to your inherently flawed idea just because you are not able to adapt to the game and wanted it to pander around you somehow.

Even your response is completely cherry-picked, reflecting on your inability in trying to perform a proper unbiased discussion.

    Please be better.

  • @siegnard i at no point have been mad, most people have been saying very similar things to me and if not they've been constructed except a few

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog thanks shirah! is there any way to lock the thread or archive it? seeing as i think its served its purpose and there are select few who are constantly sending message i'd rather not recieve if yk what i mean

Your responses unfortunately betrays that notion. The very fact that you don't even try to address the criticisms and instead:

Tries to lock down the thread because you don't like people trying to give criticism already speaks a lot.

Honestly I really love trying to discuss things that could improve the game, but if you just want people to agree with you and be antagonistic to criticisms, then the forum isn't really a place for you.

  • Dropping anchor as per OP's request.
