Time Limited Cosmetics in Emporium

  • So, now that the precedent has been set that it is OK to bring back previously Time Limited cosmetics and monetize them, which ones would you all like to see next?

My vote would go to the Mercenary Ship Set.

    _
For those that don't know...the Mayhem Ship Bundle that is now in the Emporium was a time limited set for a long while.

The great Joe Neate said - and this is a direct quote from the video linked below - "...we hope everyone gets a chance to take part in this awesome time limited event. So, it starts today, and it runs through to September the 7th. So, that's the time period you've got to get your hands on the Mayhem ship set."

  • @sweetsandman There is a difference between a Login bonus/Watch Twitch Stream cosmetic, and time limited ones that had some tasks to accomplish. To get the whole mercenary set, you had to complete tasks and acquire the cosmetic during the event.

Personally, i don't think there should be any wearable cosmetics that are time limited, only Titles.... maybe Scars and Tattoos... and maybe specific sail sets (like the Wandering Reaper ones).

But putting earned cosmetics in the emporium will frustrate the folks who put in the effort to get them in the first place.

  • @reverend-toast you're gonna hate to hear this...

The Mayhem set was NOT a login bonus or a Twitch drop.

You had to complete tasks (just like Mercenary stuff) as part of the Making Mayhem event in order to unlock it.

In fact, the tasks were as challenging or more challenging than what you had to do to get the Mercenary stuff.

    So....yeah...the precedent is set.

  • While, as you say, a precedent is now set, I think the difference here is that it's a crossover set and there may be licencing obligations. It's likely they (Rare and Gearbox) are just capitalising on the upcoming Borderlands movie, hoping that will drive more sales of this set.

  • As someone who "put in the effort" back during the Making Mayhem event and uses this particular ship set to this day as his primary sloop cosmetic (Borderlands is my all-time favorite video game series), I'm not feeling all that frustrated. I could actually care less that anyone else has it, uses it or paid money for it while I did actual work to earn it a few years back. I know what I did to earn it and that's good enough for me.

Maybe if more people playing this game had the same mature reaction instead of viewing cosmetics all in terms of whether you can "flex" on other players for imagainary status and worrying if someone else they see on the seas "earned" it or not this would be a better place...

There is literally no such thing as"devaluing" a cosmetic since there is no inherent worth in the first place. Simply the imaginary one that you and you alone have conferred upon it; usually (and pathetically) based upon the number of other players that don't have it, for some reason.

  • They already did this in 2020 when they had the Blighted Set available as part of a limited time event and then it showed up in the Emporium.

Both sets are also based on third party IP, and it's not unusual for these sets to go to the emporium later anyways.

That Joe Neate quote isn't a gotcha either - you had until the end of the event to get the set by completing the tasks.

    Challenging ?

Exploding Gunpowder Skeletons in a chain reaction.
Defeating a group of skeletons by detonating a Gunpowder Skeleton.
Burning a group of skeletons at once using a firebomb or a Chest of Rage.
Defeating a shark using a Gunpowder Barrel.
Hitting a ship with a chaos-inducing Ghostly Cannonball, chainshot, or firebomb shot from a cannon.
    Destroying a Ghost Ship.

Handing in a Stronghold Gunpowder Barrel or Keg of Ancient Black Powder.
Opening one of the Gold Hoarders' Treasure Vaults.
Setting a Skeleton Ship ablaze using an Ashen Winds Skull.
Drinking or playing music with another crew at an Outpost.
Collecting all the gold piles inside one of the Gold Hoarders' Treasure Vaults.
    Finishing any Tall Tale

Getting another crew to drink or make music with is perhaps the most challenging one (though that might have unlocked by only you playing or drinking).

The Blighted Set was announced to be in the emporium and you could get some parts earlier and for free by participating in an event, there was also another set that you could get earlier.

    Souirce: https://www.seaofthieves.com/blighted-bonus

The complete Blighted Ship Set will be available for purchase in the Pirate Emporium soon, and will include Sails, Flag, Figurehead, Cannons, Capstan, Hull and Wheel (plus Collector’s variants of the Figurehead and Sails). Each of these ship parts is stylised to reimagine an encounter with State of Decay’s living dead in the world of Sea of Thieves, where the dead also return to life but tend to be a bit less… ripe.
Can’t wait that long? Want to get a headstart by earning four of those items for free? Simply complete the challenges below between June 10th and June 16th to start zombifying your ship!

IMHO It's no different than getting items in the Premium Plunder Pass that will later on be available in the Emporium.

My guess is, they forgot mentioning the bit about being available later in the Emporium when they announced it for the Mayhem set.

  • @lem0n-curry

Hopefully you're not implying that the tasks associated to getting the Mercenary cosmetics were more challenging than this?

    Neither was "challenging".

But, that's not the point. Whether they forgot or whether it's a deal they cut with Gearbox or someone else, the point still stands. This was a time limited cosmetic set that's now in the Emporium.

@TheGrimPreacher I'd love to see most of the past cosmetics come back in some way...the Year 1/Year 2 cosmetics are on some weird untouchable pedestal, though.

"...that's the time period you've got to get your hands on the Mayhem ship set." Time period refers to Aug 24th through Sept 7th of 2021. At no point prior to this did anyone think that they meant anything other than what they literally said.

Further, in the description of the video, it says: "Pirates and bandits alike can earn this sunny symbol of chaos [Mayhem ship set] by accruing enough Favour in the Making Mayhem Event before 10am UTC Sept 7th 2021."

At no point did they say that it would be available after the event had completed...especially not by way of Emporium bucks.

To be clear, I'm fine with it...I'd just prefer they stop cherry picking stuff and start holding the same standard across a lot of other time limited cosmetics.

At no point did they say that it would not be in the Emporium, like the other 3P IP sets did, either. You are drawing a conclusion from a statement that is based around the event timeline and trying to apply it to the cosmetic set.

The event ran for a specific period of time. The set was able to be earned during the event, ergo you could not earn the set once the event ended. Nothing is said about being able to buy it later or that it would not be available again.

Wasn't that doing Run's while having the Reaper's Mark flag several times ?
Yeah, that's more challenging. The Mayhem could be done in one session without getting attention to yourself.

Nope, the event was time-limited. I also took it to be time-limited items, but they actually don't say that explicitly.

Cool...well they never said that the Mercenary, Bone Crusher, Wandering Reaper, Wailing Barnacle, or any other stuff wouldn't later be in the Emporium.

    Hence, the thread.

Yeah, that's more challenging. The Mayhem could be done in one session without getting attention to yourself.

The Wandering Reaper and Inevitable Reaper stuff was related to that IIRC...not the Mercenary stuff.

  • @sweetsandman None of those are third party, so we don't know if they are going to consider selling those. Are there any other game based sets that were later sold in the emporium?

I could see them selling the Omen set, for example, but that might be reserved for drops only. They would definitely consider selling it if there was a movie coming out since that would likely make it more sought after.

  • @d3adst1ck

To my knowledge there are seven ships sets in-game that are based on third party, non-Rare games:

    Omen (Gears of War)
    Mutinous Fist (Bleeding Edge)
Ancestral (Ori and the Will of the Wisps)
    Spartan (Halo)
    Blighted (State of Decay)
    Mayhem (Borderlands)
    Infinite Depths (Halo)

I'm reasonably certain only the Halo-themed Infinte Depths set has been released solely for the Emporium without any prior ability to unlock through either Twitch drops or in-game Events (and is also the only set that has costume or weapons parts beyond just the base ship set as well).

Of the remaining six, the Blighted, Spartan and (now) Mayhem sets have joined it in the emporium for purchase.

The Omen, Mutinous Fist and Ancestral sets remain Twitch/Event exclusive (for now).

  • @d3adst1ck said in Time Limited Cosmetics in Emporium:

...so we don't know if they are going to consider selling those.

That's really all I'm getting at with this thread.

I get that this crossover set is unique in that it IS a crossover set...but it was unquestionably a time limited set by all communication from Rare. Trying to dispute that just opens the door to nitpicking verbiage across ALL the Time Limited cosmetics.

  • I think it's great when people can buy something I got for free 😆😁

    Exactly!

If only gatekeepers with Year 1 and Year 2 cosmetics felt the same way...

As someone with Vanguard sails, the Bone Crusher clothes from sitting on skeleton thrones, the hungering one figurehead, and wailing barnacle stuff from destroying mermaid statues, I can say that I wouldn't mind if those items returned. I hate FOMO a lot, and even if others managed to get those items easily I wouldn't be bothered because that will not erase the memories I made when I adquired them. Personally, I am not interested in prestige or exclusivity, and I'm fine with items returning.
