PS5 Cannot login after trying to link MS account

  • After installation, the game asks me to link my MS account to my PS5 Account. I get a QR code, scan it, get to MS account link website, enter the code shown on game screen, get an email to verify my login into MS. Enter that code from email in MS login page as prompted. MS login page logs me in says Welcome back. At bottom of said page is a button let’s go. I click. Website says: Your account is now linked to Sea of Thieves. You can close this window. At the same time the game changes QRCode screen to an error message: You are not logged into SoT. Please log in. (Ashbeard)

Any help appreciated and sorry for the very concise wording in this post.

  • @rustymcclean I'm not even getting the qr code or link Microsoft account prompt just tells me can't sign in

  • Microsoft when I login it doesn’t show me a qr code or anything it immediately takes me to tap any button to play and once I press it it says “not signed in to sea of thieves , please sign in and try again” (ashbeard) the thing is it doesn’t give me a signed in. My ps5 username is UltimateM_44

  • @rustymcclean were getting the same message & can’t move forward, it says check settings but there’s no restriction on.

  • Simillar here, I created a support ticket and got zero response.

Stuck for 2 hours on account creation and am now just trying to get a refund. Tried multiple times but only get redirect to my MS account settings page. My mood and day is ruined by this and just don't want to spend any more time on this.

This is definitely Microsoft's fault though, I swear I'll try the best to not use any of their services anymore.

  • Hey guys, turns out the issue is really caused by the Famously Unreliable and Untrustworthy Company - Microsoft (abbrv: FUaUC-MS).

In my case, turns out that your FUaUC-MS account must be login with password. That is, do NOT login by third-party OAuth (e.g. NO email code, NO 2FA MicrosoftAutheticator, NO third-party sites). By setting up a password, then login with just the password, I finally got redirected to XBox live successfully and linked up my FUaUC-MS account.

I had opened a support ticket on FUaUC-MS, and feel free to do the same to encourage them fixing this bug:

[Major Bug] Login flow breaking bug for MS accounts without password

    Symtom:

    1. Tried to login to game "Sea of Thieves", which requires MS account
    2. Login to mine via Github (passoword not set on MS)
    3. Login redirection failed to redirect to XBox live but instead to my account settings page

Setting a password resolved my issue

    Impact: High

    • This is ruined my trust on MS accounts.
    • This will ruin companies' trust to integrate with Microsoft too as MS AC break the happy flow.
  • Hello I had made a report a day about how I’m not getting a QR code and it Lamont let me sign in now I was playing then I went back to lobby to play with my friends it went back to the ashbeard thing again. My ps5 Userbame is UltimateM_44

  • @welkinsl
I am having the same problem you are. I bought the game because I wanted to play it on my PS five. I had it on my Xbox with a Microsoft account. When I do the QR code, it sends me to where I can put the code in. Then it sends me straight to my Microsoft account page. I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to figure out how to get this fixed so I can actually play the game. What did you do to get past this problem?

  • Has no one found a solution to this it’s maddening truly. I’ve linked both my accounts together and was playing just fine up until they decided to update and now all I get is Ashbeared—error not signed in to SOT. Please sign in and try again…With NO OPTION, NO QR CODE, or anything to prompt a sign in. What a pathetic idea for the devs not to include something like that now it’s just a waiting game and wait for someone to “maybe” look at the ticket??? I have done absolutely everything as mentioned below

    Turn ps5 off/On
    Clear ps5 cache
    Rebuild ps5 data base
    Uninstall SOT—Reinstall
    Delete Save data from storage
    Change from WiFi to LAN
Sign out of my Microsoft Acct from everything—back in

Change sign in from email to password—whatever that has to do with it I never had to “sign in” other than the very first time. No prompt of an email, phone notification, etc——this ps5 mind you not pc/xbox

    Sign Out of Pc/Xbox
    Verified accounts are linked
Verified I’m using the correct email assoc w/acct

Tried another players profile on my ps5–kiwibeard, great job there.

Check to see if there’s a game update—nope

Placed a ticket for rare to “review”

I’m able to sign in on my pc under the exact same acct data everything no issue—ps5 not a shot after this last update. Pc of course prompts me to sign in—ps5 never has since the initial linking of the two accts—nor is there any prompt button etc to sign in.

So tell me what freaking more could I possibly have missed to check for troubleshooting a 60 dollar game that I’ve had more issues with on ps than pc…..

  • @welkinsl Could you possibly tell me the exact steps you made to change it to sign in with a password? Do i need to set up a new email account? I have 12+ hrs attempting to play on ps5. No matter what i do i keep getting “Cant sign into sea of thieves (Ashbeard). This is so frustrating. Wish i didnt pre-order just to play early. I was actually able to play one time when launching the game, a QR code popped up and i scanned with my phone and wow it worked. But now once again there is no QR code that pops up when launching the game and the same old Cant sign into SOT (Ashbeard).

  • @heavenlyrains I have had the exact same problem. “Cant sign into sea of thieves” (Ashbeard) on my PS5. When launching the game there is no QR code or any other options to sign in with PS5. I did have a QR code pop up when launching the game one time several days back and was able to scan my phone, link my accounts and play for one day. The next time i attempted to play…same old error. I have also tried everything you listed multiple times to try and fix this issue. Nothing works. I have spent several days researching and attempting peoples problem fix suggestions to no avail. I even called Microsoft and Playstation support and after waiting forever they both stated that they cannot help because it is a SOT developer issue. I can’t find a phone number to directly contact SOT so I fear this support forum is our only hope. Heavenlyrains if i figure something out I will update you and hopefully you will do the same. I pre-ordered premium edition to play early and am still unable to play. This is ridiculous, frustrating & disappointing!

  • @welkinsl what are the “EXACT” steps you took to set up a new password? Did you have to set up a new email? Thanks.

  • Why can I not login into my account but my gf can into hers

  • I find it frustrating that so many people have the exact same issue, but there is No help to be found, not by support, not in faq’s.
    Someone needs to step up.

  • @slayray3060 Ahoy matey!

We do have a support article on it. While the team at Rare are investigating a more permanent fix.

  • @wild-north-wolf I will do the same friend I am working diligently to try and fix this I was able to play fine up until the recent update I got the ashbeard error and have been unable to login. I try to remind myself that they are human they make mistakes but this is certainly not on my end when I can login on the EXACT same account just find on my PC…

  • @musicmee this does not solve the issue for those with the “Ashbeard” error. I have tried this upon other things several times….

  • @heavenlyrains Ahhh sorry no it does not - That is Kiwibeard only. At what stage are you getting Ashbeard?

  • Has anyone had any luck resolving the Ashbeard error

  • @musicmee from the very moment I attempt to login on ps5. It states, press any button to continue, I do as such then states signing in followed by a new statement saying, “you are not signed into sea of thieves, please sign in and try again” (Ashbeard). Mind you this is Sea of Thieves Premium edition I preordered for the PlayStation 5. It gives no QR code to relink accounts nor a linking code to put into Microsoft.live.com/linking. The screen only takes me straight back to “please press any button to continue”. I’ve tried the following to resolve this issue

    Turn ps5 off/On
    Clear ps5 cache
    Rebuild ps5 data base
    Uninstall SOT—Reinstall
    Delete Save data from storage
    Change from WiFi to LAN
Sign out of my Microsoft Acct from everything—back in

Change sign in from email to password—whatever that has to do with it I never had to “sign in” other than the very first time. No prompt of an email, phone notification, etc——this ps5 mind you not pc/xbox

    Sign Out of Pc/Xbox
    Verified accounts are linked
Verified I’m using the correct email assoc w/acct

Tried another players profile on my ps5–kiwibeard, great job there.

Check to see if there’s a game update—nope

Placed a ticket for rare to “review”

  • @heavenlyrains This is the same issue my girlfriend has been having since beta. She pre-ordered the upgraded version of the game to get early access and STILL cannot access the game.

We have put tickets in, in which we get the standard response of "Try these for Ashbeard". We have tried them all and none of them work because the issue isn't actually Ashbeard, it's the fact that she has never received the prompt to link accounts. The pop-up simply does not exist for her. Her MS account is find because I bought it for her a long time ago on PC, but she doesn't like playing on PC and wanted to play on PS5. The prompt will come up when I log in, and at first I suggested she just use my profile but apparently you need PS Plus to play online (which I do not have). We tried Sony Support who said there was nothing they can do, we tried Microsoft Support who said that the only route is to contact the developer.

The most recent ticket has been open for about 2.5 weeks now, and the only responses are "We are aware and are working on it" and the canned "try the following troubleshooting methods for Ashbeard" which, infuriatingly, get sent in the same thread where they could already see it didn't work.

We were so excited to play the game, and its sad because I was holding off playing it again myself until she was able to play with me again. But it's looking more and more like the solution is only going to exist as a refund request, and she's just never going to get to play on PS5. Which sucks because if so then she won't touch the PC version out of principle, and as much as I hyped the game up, I won't be playing either.

We sail together, or not at all. With that being said, if we do hear back with a solution, I will follow up on here so you're aware as well.

  • @heavenlyrains

    Verified accounts are linked

How did you verify the accounts are linked? My girlfriend was never able to get the prompt in the first place, and her PSN does not indicate that a MS account was ever linked to it.

  • Idk if anyone is still having this issue, but after about 45 minutes this is how I did it so it finally worked. I used my phone and just went directly to sea of thieves site and signed in with Microsoft that way. Then when I scanned the qr code on playstation it said welcome back and finally worked.

  • this is really bad but you know what is worse!!! i made my account signd in did the whole bs dance they ask you to just to play this game on ps5 and my account unlinks itself after 161 hours of progress microsoft wont let me access my email to relink saying im putting in the wrong password but guess what its the right password so now my account is blocked i contacted microsoft support no help from them and i know it is the right password because i use the same password for 2 other things same typing caps numbers and symbols all the exact same but no its somehow the wrong password so i would even if i have to start over play the game with my ps5 linked to the new email i had to make to put in my support tickets but no on that 1 also because you can only link to playstation 1 time and ITS PERMANANT and cant be linked ever to a new account

  • @rustymcclean did u find a solution same thing happening to me

  • I'm having the same issue! Get an error. Delete all my saved game files try and relink my account. And get nowhere with it. You would think that somewhere there would be a relink your PS5 account to your Microsoft account on the page. Noooooo! That would be to easy. Let's complicate and make this as inconvenient as possible!

  • @rustymcclean just had to wait for the first confirmation code to expire. Second code worked and got me signed in.

  • I can't log in either the same thing comes up on my game on Playstation 5 I'm rotted bc I really wanted to play it

  • @billybutcher1st said in PS5 Cannot login after trying to link MS account:

@rustymcclean I'm not even getting the qr code or link Microsoft account prompt just tells me can't sign in

  • Today I faced that issue (after 10 hours of play), it is showing me the steps to log in (the same as when I 1st bought the game). I scan the QR code, enter in the code from the game screen. Then get emailed a code, enter in the new code to link accounts. Then the game displays a message "Can't sign in to Sea of Thieves, try again later (Ashbeard)". I don't understand after successfully linking my account to Microsoft when I bought the game, and playing for 10 hours of SOT why is this happening now? I feel scammed from Xbox.
Ashbeard needs to walk the plank!

  • I found a solution for new Microsoft accounts.

Upon proceeding by the QR code link and entering the code I've created a new Microsoft account and failed to proceed further. Even opening the link on desktop computer didn't help. However, as the account was new, I tried just to login on the root Microsoft account page separately like here: https://account.microsoft.com/ – and it showed me one or a few popups to activate/click through . After doing that I reopened the game, get the new code for the QR link, entered account details and it worked.

As a summary ASNWER: Try logging in into your Microsoft account separately (for me it was here: https://account.microsoft.com/) before connecting the accounts in the PS5 game, as there might be some annoying pop-ups to click through.

P.S. Dear Microsoft, the humanity is moving to the next generation services, software and user interfaces. The company that made Internet Explorer 6 will never make it through.

  • @tasm137 or you can try login.live.com as link to login to your Microsoft account before doing that in the game.

  • When I press x to sign in, it's not even popping up a screen for the QR code so I can't even play this game and they haven't updated or done anything to fix this problem.

  • @welkinsl thanks a lot for this mate. It was a pain in the ars but it worked! For anyone else confused, basically go to Microsoft login, go to security, choose a password (I did auto) and make that your method of signing in. When when using the qr code login make sure not to hit send code, but choose other ways to login and hit your auto save password (or type it). Happy sailing!

  • @rustymcclean - welkinsl (message down below) has cracked it. For anyone else confused, basically go to Microsoft login on your browser, login, go to security, choose a password (I did auto) and make that your method of signing in. Then when using the qr code at SoT pagin to login make sure not to hit "send code," but choose "other ways to login" and hit your auto save password (or type it). Would have never sussed it if wasn't for the others guys help. Anyway, happy sailing!
