Regarding the Black Dog set, and Xbox/PC exclusivity

  • Hey, friends!

I just wanted to get some thoughts on parchment, so to speak. As we all now know, the Black Dog set was made exclusive to both Xbox/PC, with today's update. I find this to be a little disheartening, as not only is it an odd choice, but it is a detractor for people who've been sailing since launch.

While I myself don't own a PS5, I have a few buddies who began their maiden voyage back in 2018 - all of them pre-ordered and have long enjoyed the Black Dog set. Over the years, they moved to different games, but expressed extreme interest in coming back with the launch of the PS5 version.

I would understand some limitations such that a Black Dog Pack code could not be added to a PS5 console, and/or be generally unobtainable on PS5, but I have to admit that completely locking it off of PS5 regardless of whether or not you already owned it prior, feels quite bad. Especially since the entire rest of the Obsidian/Onyx/Midnight/Ebon cosmetics are available - it's JUST the Black Dog Pack that isn't.

May be wrong, but I feel that there will be quite a few players upset by this choice, especially if the Black Dog cosmetics were staples in their pirate's outfit and story/lore. Again, I would absolutely understand if the cosmetics simply weren't obtainable on PS5, but I believe that if an account already has redeemed that code prior, they should have access to the cosmetics. I really hope that a change is made going forward.

So what do you all think? Let's keep this conversation respectful and on-track.

  • I don't think there's really anything to discuss. Sony probably didn't want players pre-ordering the PS5 version for the cosmetics, getting them added to their account, and then returning/refunding the PS5 order. Likewise, they also don't want XBox stuff being usable on Playstation only servers.

I don't think any amount of complaining is going to change this, because it's a business decision outside of the developers control.

  • Sony wanted to flex in the deal and they flexed. Pretty much all there is to it imo.

  • I genuinely don’t think it matters at the end of the day. There are hundreds of cosmetic choices out there and if all you’re interested in is running some pre-order set and flexing, then what’s the point?

  • @tesiccl Yeah, it probably doesn't. It doesn't even effect me specifically, I just felt bad for the folks that came from PC/Xbox, and who already had them, but won't be able to use them.

  • Here i have been searching on why i didn’t have my black dog set that i have always used since day 1. And i just found this thread and it made me a bit sad becuase it was my favorite outfit :/

Have Rare said anything about this info anywhere? Becuase it sounds like a pretty lame reason on why i shouldn’t be able to access content that i have unlocked prior

  • They need to add these cosmetics back into all versions of the game, it's hard locking something that we paid for, who cares ps5 can't obtain the black dog set.

It's a cross-platform game that started on Xbox, and I want to show off I was here from the start.

This game is about showing off, and being the drippiest pirate on the open waters. I should also be able to see my pre-order bonus skins from ps5 on my Xbox account. It's BS, and very shady practice.

Imagine Fortnite not allowing you to access your skins you paid for from bundles like Xbox bundle, PS4 pro bundle, or Nintendo switch bundle.

It's supposed to be "Sea of Thieves"

    Not "Thieves"

Gimme my cutlass back, please RARE

    BRZT! Wrong!

  • @tesiccl The whole entire gameplay loop is about earning money for cosmetics... You, Sir, are the one that is very wrong.

  • @animej We just want to flex on these boats

  • @d3adst1ck OP isn't talking about the ps5 preorder or codes, he is talking about the original pre-order bonus for SoT. And how even if you have it unlocked on xbox it will not show in your ps5 inventory.

It's not a business decision, it is locking players of previously purchased content.

Why does it matter that I have content unlocked from prior to PS5 launch? Why can't I access the content I purchased from pre-ordering the ps5 version on my Xbox and PC? It's cross-platform.

I paid for the game 3 times. PC, Xbox, and PS5.

I should have all my unlocked content. Simple as that.

If Fortnite did this for the console exclusive bundles Epic games would have a lawsuit on their hands.

Would like a response from someone at RARE

  • Its entirely an odd choice that was made, and im pretty sure all exclusives from ps5 was from sonies half of the contract if i was going to put money on it. While i do see some of the viewpoints in favor of it, i dont agree with it and think the exclusivity is just such an odd choice.

I would argue that the gameplay is not about earning cosmetics, but instead is about doing what you want to do. I have been wearing generally the same exact outfit for over a year with very little change, because i like the look i got going.

Its a sandbox game, and if what you want out of the game is to earn all the cosmetics, thats up to you, but for me its about the chaos and interactions. I dont play for cosmetics, i play for the pirate antics. Not everyone plays for the same reasons as each other.

  • @ratman-radio you should be asking Sony about it.

  • @d3adst1ck Why would I ask Sony about a cosmetic that was added to the game prior to PS5 launch?

  • @ratman-radio Because they are the ones that want the restrictions.

  • @d3adst1ck how can they restrict skins that were already apart of the game. I understand if they want to restrict their preorder bonus. Why can I not see the skins I already own is my own opinion. It’s BS contract. And it sucks nothing will get done

  • I don't have the Black Dog Set, but I do own the Ori and the Blind Forest Set. It's one of my favorites and I can't use it on my PS5. Kind of cheeks tbh lol. Yeah, theres tons of sets, but there's nothing quite like that one. Especially the cannons, wheel, and capstan. Disappointed to say the least.

I own the Ebon Flintlock Pistol and like you said it works fine. If Sony was trying to get Xbox green items of out their version of the game, why would they block only half of the set? I can also sail the Halo and Gears of War sets with no problem. Make it make sense.

The Ebon Flintlock has been a twitch drop in the past, same with the Gears of War and Halo sets. That's probably why they aren't blocked.

  • @d3adst1ck I actually got the Ori set through a Twitch Drop. That's why it's weird to me. I guess the original way was through XGP Ultimate so I sort of get it now.
