  • @thamb0 the lava, scolding water, and meteors raining down happen for a short time, the geysers and rumbling make up for the rest. Added risk, added rewarded. Simple.

  • @thamb0
The point of the DR is to be dangerous, there is a constant risk but it is worth it for the ashen loot. Besides, if they removed those how am I suppost to cheese my OOS bounties

  • @thamb0 I going to be honest they used to way way worse also they nerfed them before....side note the roar is supposed to be hard and I believe removing the challenge removes the value of that region but hey few tips when sailing there learn the range of the volcano, earthquakes and smoke are your warning to get off the island or find cover under ground or under something happy sailing

  • what do we think about getting rid of the ground shake and constant geysers at any Island in the Devil's Roar?

    Then...what is the dangers?

the annoying ground shaking and non-stop geysers just make doing anything there a complete pain.

Devils Roar, difficulty Level? Hells Fire. If you cant deal, stay away.

I think a large majority of players stay away from DR specifically because of the ground shake/geysers.

Which is why its the best "safe space" away from players :P

  • This is why when people say they want this or that special event in DR I am always hesitant because I feel it will be followed by the inevitable "nerf volcanos/geysers/earthquake requests".

    I like volcanos 🌋

IRL I have been to the edge of active volcano caldera, it was the one of dumbest and most amazing things I have done 🤣

  • @thamb0

Use the geysers to your advantage. Pops skellies instantly, captains and lords may need a 2nd step lol.

The earthquake is the 1st stage of the eruption warning system, but can be a false alarm. I head for my ship when the quakes hit. There is a rumbly crackle that tells you the island will erupt. Then smoke. You should have someone on the ship leaving at this point lol.

    Leave them both alone.

(Edit: DR skellies are resistant to firebombs, the geyser is a different tool)

  • I don't have a strong opinion on it but I've been on a roar cargo kick and it's hilarious that they just keep emerging me into active volcanoes and send me to islands with active geysers.

    My poor bottles.

I remember how annoying it was when geysers got the last hit on the lords though, and it wouldn't count for a comm.

  • @thamb0 no thanks.

  • OoS bounties in the roar are simple as. Plus running into players is nerfed.
The roar is my home, leave it alone.

  • The volcano eruptions last to long. I wish they lasted like 90 seconds max. It’s so annoying getting pummeled by rocks for like 3 mins straight.

Geysers are super annoying but not as annoying as putting out fires and repairing your ship over and over again whilst flaming boulders are falling from the sky.

  • Leave them alone. Even though Geyser fall damage kills me more than anything out there.

  • They're part of the aesthetic of the region, I wouldn't remove them entirely. It should at least feel like a dangerous place to be.

The only changes I would make to the Devil's Roar are:

    • Lower the "aimbot" on volcano tephra and geysers. It's far too obvious that these have been coded to target the player. Go to dig anything in the DR and you are pretty much guaranteed a geyser will spawn underneath. And you can see the pyroclasts from volcanoes swerve mid-air to hit players/ships.
    • Lower the time a volcano erupts for. Currently, it seems to be about 6-8 mins, which I think is a bit too long. At that point it stops being a danger and just becomes frustrating. 3-5 mins would be a better balance, I think.

These two small changes would still maintain the element/appearance of danger without frustrating players so much.

  • @burnbacon If you need a safe place from players, they made Safer Seas.

  • I don't get why people want all challenge and difficulty removed from video games all the time.

Difficulty for the sake of difficulty does not make a good videogame, it just creates frustration.

Geysers spawning under loot doesn't create a meaningful challenge, it just forces the player to wait and get annoyed. Same with volcanoes that erupt for so long - you just sail away and wait... and wait... until it stops. That's not a compelling gameplay loop.

If we're talking about things that are too easy, I still lament the nerfing of the Kraken. It's far too easy on a sloop, and unrewarding. I'm hoping if we ever get a Hunter's Call Emissary that it comes with a way to summon more powerful Kraken and Meg encounters.

It's supposed to cause frustration. It's the Hard zone that punishes you in exchange for greater reward.
The geysers that spawn under loot are a comical way to punish impatient and inexperienced pirates.
The earthquakes and volcanoes present a sense of urgency to finish the voyage quickly. You can even risk staying after the eruption to gather your last bits of loot and escape. Sailing away immediately and waiting (when you should be fishing) is your choice. You could choose riskier play styles.
The geysers and volcanoes also damage skeletons and enemy ships and can be used to advantage.
It's supposed to be hard. That's why the loot pays more.
Also the Roar is where most players won't go and you tend to get left alone. If they made it easier it would get real busy.

  • @rahn82

I spend a lot of time in the Roar, I know how it works, and I know the pros and cons. I still stand by everything I've said regards gameplay design. There has to be a better way to create difficulty that's a meaningful and engaging challenge.

I've done all my fishing, there's no "should" about it. I just use that time waiting on the volcano to stop to go make myself a coffee or use the toilet.

Also the Roar is where most players won't go and you tend to get left alone. If they made it easier it would get real busy.

This was very true until Season 11. Diving has made the Roar far more accessible and I see a lot more traffic out there than before. Whether it stays that way, remains to be seen.

  • I'm still salty I lost my ancient skelly to geysers.

  • Definitely don't get rid of earthquakes and geysers, but I probably wouldn't be mad if they were to make it so that earthquakes only happened when the island was about to erupt. The false alarm ones are pretty annoying since they make you go on high alert for no reason. At this point though I think any nerfs they give the devils roar should have another buff to it alongside it. Maybe make volcanic rocks hit your boat more often or allow the outpost to erupt again if they were to change anything about geysers or earthquakes.

  • OP deleted their post lol.

Anyways, volcano range was shadow nerfed. Guess I'm the only one out there since s11 lol
