Season dedicated to the game's health.

  • I'm concerned about the issues that get progressively worse with each update/season. Server performance and hit registration problems have deteriorated over the years since Sea Of Thieves' release. I love this game and the content that the game has to offer, but I believe a season dedicated to the game's health and fixing the issues that have plagued this game for years is needed for the long-term. Other games have had seasons dedicated to the same thing. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege had "Operation: Health" which the goal of that season was to do just that.

  • If they do that, the loud ones will be upset due to "Lack of Content" release.

  • @burnbacon And I totally understand that, we've already had to deal with a 9 month long season. If they keep adding more content but don't fix these major issues it's only going to get worse from here and will devalue future seasons if its poor performance persists. The game's health is far from what I believe it should be. Short-term, the season would be weak compared to other seasons in terms of content, but long-term it'd be incredibly beneficial for the future.

  • Back in the day Ubisoft did this for The Division. The devs kept adding more and more content and the game kept getting more broken with each addition. Eventually somebody posted on their forums. Enough of this, delay the next update and fix your game! and that is exactly what happened. An update was released that fixed all of the long standing problems and added a few much requested features. It was very well received by the players. Rare could do something similar and give us the much requested Costume and Ship presets at the same time

  • @phantaxus
Its pretty astounding that the counter argument to that is if they solely focus on a bug update, then they won't have time to add new content to the game. Which is partly true if game content requires coding, that takes away time from fixing bugs if the same team are responsible.
But you can add a LOT of skins that don't take much time in tandem with a bug fix update.

  • I think the implication of when they discuss server performance and the like on the official podcast is that with a live service they can't work on 'game health' in isolation because every update adds new challenges and issues with all the interdepencies between systems so it has to be ongoing fixes alongside content updates.

Perfect example is that they make changes that with their testing got hit reg to a point of 90% of shots correctly registering. This is treated as a meme because when they were released alongside content the server performance went down and the improvement went largely unseen.

  • @blue-aus7en I feel like previous attempts to dedicate updates to fixes kinda failed.
Feels like it didnt sorted the game all that much and it didnt last

  • @hiradc Right, I hardly noticed the difference in the hit reg too. If they gave themselves time to figure out these problems and fix them, we would've noticed the improvements

  • @faceyourdemon the game still needs to be in a good state if the developers want everyone to enjoy new content. If the game's state gets worse than it currently is, the game's content becomes less enjoyable. Many players have already quit playing for various reasons, and one of them is the state of the game.

  • The problem with "server performance" is that most of what people think is server performance is client performance.

On Xbox Series X I get almost none of the things I hear people complain about. Sometimes I get a little stutter. I hear a lot of complaints about black screen after dying in HG but that is not a performance issue. That happens when the ship sinks while the crew are dead which triggers the server to start looking for a new server for the crew to join while they are on the Ferry. What they need to do with that is add a "Searching for a Server" message.

  • I fully agree with this, but fixing things that were issues when the game launched and weren't REALLY apparent, like hitreg, would require rewriting the whole game. Which obv they don't have the power for.

  • @blue-aus7en

My issue, they say server performance was aproblem, and to fix it they took away a ship on server. This did not fix any issues, so put the ship back on server.
Hit reg.. hit reg us hit reg idc about the memes about it and we gonna feel it with single fire weapons unlike other shooters with full auto ( DO NOT ADD FULL AUTO RARE)
The content is small added imo, we could have a stronger AI to fight for higher rewards. A ship with more skelly crew that have player health, that repair and bilge somewhat. So players can get pvp experience in a better way than getting devastated on by my crew and others.
The pvp modes siren song cool (No one does them) HG great, but under water ques kill it (Allow surface queuing)
ARENA never needed to leave. Because pvp and combat makes this game so crisp. The Naval is unmatched.
Cheaters... well we all know they push creators off and player base, but Rare hasn't found a way to deal with them, I'd say Hardware ban account ban anit enough

The runners. Well sloop too fast in wind. Everyone else can be caught easier.

Revive old World events making them have more loot and entice players to want to do them.

Ship cosmetics, it anit hard to make some serious beautiful color balancing designs. We are pirates we like shiny stuff.

I Pray this game gets a reboot in Performance the game crashing and gun shuddering glitches, invisible cannons, unable to interact with ship items, and cannons not allowing to be shot are problems a game with 5 years shouldn't be having.

I lov.. loved Sot unfortunately now I'm watching it RoT

  • Until then. I will not login and support a game that ignores its player base. I want to see improvements, talk is cheap. Let's see fixes, then I will set sail and put another 11khrs of time in

I played once over the holidays. Did an hourglass sesh with some buddies.

The issue where you buy supply crates and can't pick them up from the merchant. Is that a client thing or a server thing? It's been around for ages.

On one server, the ship logbook didn't load in at all lol. None of my crew could see it on the table.

At one point, we decided to switch from EU to NA. One of my friends is in Sweden and I'm in the states. I wasn't able to load a guild ship. The option was grayed out and locked for me. So I asked others to try and the option was locked for everyone else on the crew.

If all you get on your Xbox is the occasional stutter, maybe I need to switch back to Xbox. What is your experience with hitreg? 9/10?

Spent the rest of that weekend on CoD. Sometimes I miss this game, but it only takes a sesh to remind me why I needed a break in the first place. I'd love a maintenance update. And I hope they silently add anticheat.

  • @theblackbellamy can't agree more. People who are blind to the games state are reasons it stay like it, ignore the problems and pretend it's OK will never show the creator the issues we face. Appreciate the response I strongly hope the game gets some sort of improvement by next season, I'm done with false pretenses

  • @theblackbellamy "...At one point, we decided to switch from EU to NA. One of my friends is in Sweden and I'm in the states..."

And exactly what do you think Rare can do to make cross-Atlantic groups work?

  • @foambreaker I think the issue they spoke on were about guild menu not working. Nothing to do with cross continent server problems.

If yall really think the games is fine, then ur blind. Lfgs all time low, cheaters running g off partners and other streamers, and regular fatal crashings

And exactly what do you think Rare can do to make cross-Atlantic groups work?

The line you quoted was followed up by the issue that, not only was I unable to load a guild ship, no one on my crew could at the time lol. The story had nothing to do with server performance while sailing with EU friends.

But since you brought it up, there was a time even when Arena was it's buggiest, when I experienced fewer instances of cannon reload delays, bucket reg, etc, with the same ping as I do playing in EU now. Hitreg, imo, has remained pretty much the same for years.

  • This game needs polish and is at the brink of needing serious healthcare. It feels like a thousand band-aids. The game is a house of cards ready to collapse when anything sneezes.

I don't know the percentage but it feels like 40% of my bullets will not register. Even cannonballs hitting my ship and other ships will fail to do any damage whatsoever, including curses. I frequently come across uncommon bugs on a regular basis because there is so many, the inventory/barrel bug which is devastating without the inside knowledge to know how to fix it is a game over screen for many players. I logged in today and i bear witness to such weirdo things per usual got immediately server merged after logging in and a brigantine spawned on top of my ship and made it disappear and I could not interact with any ship equipment and could not loot any barrels on ships or land and later on that bug happened to my crewmate.

The entire universe would agree a game is bad if the basic controls and systems fail to work and we are in that position. The basic combat is uncomfortable along with the performance in general.

  • The game needs an anti-cheat to ban all the cheaters

  • @blue-aus7en
This is a great idea but I don't think a lot of players could last another season that is filled with very little content. I for one have a lot more grinding as I havent even reached pirate legend yet (almost done all I have left is OOS that I'm at 41 for) so I could bear it due to the other content I still have but the most vocal of the community would not be pleased, not to mention the already starved of content other than pvp streamers.

To be fair most qol seasons in the past did do a little bug fixing, but they were mostly dedicated to updating features that were already functioning. Not to say thats bad, but a season dedicated near exclusively to bugs rather than any content or altering functional stuff would just feel so nice for the over all game!

Knowing that my shots will land nearly every time if i aim directly at an enemy will be nice, knowing my bucket i threw out of the ship already wont suddenly splash back when i try to grab another bucket will be nice, and knowing that the food i just ate will heal me or that when i switch gear in my hand it will actually switch would be so bloody nice!

Point being, if for a "bug fix" season, if they actually focus on that rather than changing stuff thats not an issue, i think it would have more impact than the previous attempts that had less focus on bugs and more just minor conveniences.

  • @goldsmen "knowing my bucket i threw out of the ship already wont suddenly splash back when i try to grab another bucket will be nice, and knowing that the food i just ate will heal me or that when i switch gear in my hand it will actually switch would be so bloody nice!"

    Adding to this list:

    • Knowing that when you press the spacebar- character will jump,
    • When you offer your soul to the ferry- it will do so first try,
    • When you attempt to load yourself in cannon- it won't cancel at the last second,
    • Taking/storing items from a storage crate- will do so without interruption,
    • When your cannonball hits a ship- that it does damage,
    • When your character takes damage- seeing the health bar decrease immediately..
The list of problems goes on and On and ON

    --

Hit-reg is not the only problem.. EVERYTHING REG is a problem. There is no solution to hit reg without fixing EVERYTHING REG. There is something very fundamentally wrong with the net code in this game and it's obvious. No action that you attempt to perform is guaranteed.

I know the developers care about this game, but I am CONVINCED they do not actually play the game on live servers otherwise they would be absolutely embarrassed by the state the game is in and begin fixing immediately - otherwise I retract my statement and they don't care.

No new player that spawns in and starts teleporting around is going to want to explore your game- I as well as many others only stuck around as a veteran player who's seen the good side of SoT and knows what it once was like and praying it will get better again.

    --

Go watch some videos from 2018/2019 the game runs SO SMOOTH not a single stutter. Hop on the game after watching old gameplay and you'll want to cry. What happened to the game I payed for??

    2017 Developer gameplay video
    2018 Gameplay video

If the developers have an old build of the game and re-released Sea of Thieves Classic I'd buy the game again in a heartbeat if it will play like those old videos again.

    • I'd like to see community driven updates- the developers don't begin making content for the game unless it's approved and talked about with the community.
    • Poll everything with the community - like Old School Runescape does.. The developers realized they made a mistake, and owned up to it in the best possible way: re-releasing an older build and communicating with the community.
    • Another thing I'd like to see is the developers playing their own game from time to time on stream. AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. Play the game and you'll see how broken it is, and we'll see that you have an understanding what some of us deal with on a daily basis.
    • Stop with the insider NDA, let the community talk about the game, and where it's going. The game feels like more of an art project to devs than an actual business. The game is going to be the way they want it REGARDLESS of what the community actually wants or needs.
WE PLAY IT! It should be the WAY WE WANT IT Have a more open communication with your community. The relationship between Rare devs and the players is TOXIC and it makes the playerbase feel ignored. Don't ignore us.
  • @bleu-solo Im pretty sure most of the problems boil down to some kind of packet loss issues since the way a lot of reg issues act is a lot like packet loss troubles in any other game.

  • I have to agree with the OP here.

In terms of content, I think we're in a good place now with Season 11 but the bugs really do ruin the game for a lot of players.

It's not just hit reg. There are so many "known but not known" (not officially documented) bugs that it's disheartening. I went on a bug reporting spree last year, and the vast majority of those bugs haven't been fixed yet. (Almost a year since I reported the ship nameplate bug and that's still happening.)

We all love this game but I think Rare need to invest some time (and money for QA) in giving it some long overdue TLC.

  • @goldsmen Im all for smooth gameplay, I just doubt at this point that they can deliver that.

REG and most of the main issues goes can be blamed at the limits of the servers, water and moving ships on it already pushes the system to the limit.
Their explanation, not mine, kicking out (gently) the previous console should give them more wiggle room to work and expand.
Cant remember which game did it recently but they kept previous consoles with one last update in seperated servers from the rest and move on.

  • Game is in an amazing place for adventure. Season 11 mixed with qol from previous seasons make this season the best adventure season so far imo, so good that I think it'll carry the game for quite some time. Not some player boom but massive qol improvements for adventure players.

I've kinda made my peace with game performance lol. It's incredible what this game has become as far as being an adventure game goes. I'll just say I think SoT deserves it to run well, the devs deserve it, the dedicated players deserve it and I hope it happens. Season 11 is cool as heck. Lots of longevity to it.

  • We didn't get much from season 11. All we got is a prestige system so we can level more - which is nice for those who have been sitting at max levels for years.. But it's the same voyages, same forts with less loot for the same amount of time. With even more lag and new bugs.

I've already got my 750 voyage commendations, and sea forts, why do I want to do 40 more voyages, and 40 more sea forts (raids). It's the same thing repackaged over and over and people eat it up like something new was added. I want the game to function as well as it did when it was released.

Have you fought any ships in this latest update? The masts don't go down (visually), the anchor is undropable, you can't get more ammo on the enemy ship, you can't touch their wheel, you can't take more than 5 steps without stuttering, teleporting, and my guns don't shoot consistently anymore, the skins on my character randomly change, my emotes get swapped around mid fight. This game is in a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE state and people on the forums need to stop gaslighting the devs into thinking otherwise.

People keep saying, "needs more content", but if they add anything else the whole game might explode. It nearly did yesterday when everyone's account was reset to 0 gold, default weapons, and equipment, with no cosmetics. What this game needs is bug fixes/new servers.

  • after 5 years countless emails,my opinion is,they wont fix cause they dont know how, takes alot of core work and they just wont do it...the other side is microsoft, they just want money, they dont care if we lag or we get cheaters, they just interested in $$ emporium, buying new games...they havent implement any kind of anti cheat on most of the games like sea of thieves,so cheaters its not their priority, money is!!like crossplay, they didnt do it cause its good to play with pc friends, they done it to sell more pcs instead of consoles, and "ok" its better than a console but you can add any kind of cheat to a PC than no console will ever have it...and thats why they will NEVER do anything...they keep getting money regardless how ppl feel about it!thats why my console just have sea of thieves now...i play thew other games on playstation without any kind of crossplay!!and its 10x better

Im willing to bet that was for the sake of the old console, not for the sake of the game as a whole. They probably realized the future of which ever game that was, would not run well on the old consoles and just stopped updating it for the sake of the system its on. Sea of thieves is already past that point seeing how it runs on xbox 1.

Limiting the game from older gens doesnt make the game run better for new gens, its just for the sake of the gene the system is since it can only handle so much.

  • The nonstop glitches are starting to really get out of hand imho.

Literally just sank because I couldn't interact with my ship's anchor.

Not being able to interact with cannons until another player interacts with it first, launching out of a cannon only to go straight down into the sea regardless of where you were aiming, not being awarded supplies at shipwright, loading into an HG match and your cannons are invisible, UI screen glitch where you need to interact with a barrel and slowly back out of range, getting stuck in the animation loop where you are constantly arming your weapon and have to sprint to stop it, sneaking up to an enemy only to have your weapon be put away when you try to aim, the list of persistent glitches and homebrew work arounds just keeps getting longer.

wait, there was no improvement, the 9/10 became a meme because it got way worse. not because we didnt see the 9/10. if their testing is flawed, which it probably is since every new season breaks the game, a health season would be great.

  • @locke5474677
9/10 maybe a meme, but the registration did get much better, not "way worse". Before the 9/10 update I was having to consistently 4-shot enemies (they didn't eat, and I main pistol so it wasn't lack of blunderbuss pellets). After the 9/10 update I much more consistently 2 shot and 3 shot opponents. It isn't 90%, but it was and is significantly better than it had been.

We need more bug fixes in all areas though- not just hit reg. Game is getting really rough to play. Hardly anything works right anymore "in areas of intense action."
