Firing out of cannon should take some health away from you

  • Anyone else think boarding is just out of control? There's no drawback to it other than the ship being undermanned. I think if it took just a banana or coconut's worth of health away, it might be good so people will at least have to eat one piece of food when they board, or try to sword dash when possible.

  • @aj-deadshow why do you hate fun.....it takes skill to fire yourself out of a cannon and land on another ship most players just end up in the water and if your not watching your ladders that's on you

  • @aj-deadshow not really, with half decent headset you should hear them boarding and be able to identify what side. If you're not confident getting one blunder on them just blunder bomb off. Boarding doesn't need a nerf

  • @aj-deadshow

Firing out of cannon is goofy and fun. Unfortunately if there is a problem with it it's that boarding is oppressive and single minded in general during ship to ship combat.

  • Seems like a backwards solution to boarding when you don't need a cannon to do it.

Suggesting a change like this should cost 100 AC.

  • No, no it should not, OP.
Do you know how hard it is to bullseye someone else's ship?
And if you hear climbing; Report it and react to it.

  • The boarding meta has been making ship-to-ship combat pretty obsolete for years now. And I agree Rare should make an effort to discourage boarding and encourage ship-to-ship. Not remove it completely, but certainly nerf it.

However I do not think this is the approach. Shooting yourself from a cannon is not any kind of big boarding thing. Yeah it can help, but there are a lot of ways to do it.

The ways I would consider doing it:

    • Properly patch silent boarding
    • Lock the bullets box so only allies can use it (Or add some sort of slow down for boarders). This would also encourage sword a bit more over doublegunning
    • Increase player damage taken when a cannonball hits the spot they are repairing.
    • Hitting the same spot multiple times has a chance to make hole bigger and take longer to repair.

Basically you either give some disadvantages to the boarder, or some advantages to ship-to-ship

  • @kakaroto9766 I agree with you here. If you like double gunning, you'll like OWL, CoD, MW3, the list goes on. If you like melee combat, you'll like For Honor, Chivalry, Mount and Blade, We Who Are About To Die, etc... What makes Sea of Thieves unique from Black Flag, from Skull and Bones, from other pirate games is that the players are the crew; we raise the anchor, we drop the sails, we steer the ship, we shoot the cannons. We don't give orders we carry them out. I'd love to see more of what makes SoT unique and less of what other games have, and to me that is naval combat. I too want more emphasis on naval combat. It's what is unique in Sea of Thieves.

Edit: I'm not fundamentally against boarding and understand at more competitive levels of play boarding is required to secure the sink. I'm merely suggesting that the naval combat mechanics are unique to Sea of Thieves and would love more emphasis on them.

  • No this is up there with that crazy plan someone put forward to charge us for each visit to the ferry

  • If you are actually good at naval and not just bad at close quarter combat like a lot of these requestors imply, then it doesn't take a lot of pressure to negate their playstyle.

I'm not as good at cqc, I don't mind boarder heavy players as we're both trying to force the fight to suit our playstyle. I've sunk many a tdm player by being aware that my goal while they are on board is to live and keep water level as low as possible if I've put holes on their ship. They are on a timer and it is a high risk playstyle to abandon your ship.

  • Seeing as I rarely see anyone using a cannon to board and they use the sword lunge instead.

    No

  • Nein. No need.

  • @phantaxus I believe that was Rare who had that idea...also at one point when you did an anchor drop why at full sail it dmg the ship ahhhhhh some of old and weird stuff

  • Shooting out of cannons is used for more than just boarding. Players will do it to get to skeleton thrones or the player immortalisation on top of Plunder Outpost.

There are also those that shoot out of cannons close to islands to grab some quick supplies. Taking health away from players during any of those things just wouldn’t be good. Especially since it can take some players a while to reach certain skeleton thrones.
