Allow more than one crew in Safer Seas for PRACTICE purposes

  • Now, I might get a lot of flack for this, but hear me out:
One of the things that I struggle with the most in sea of thieves, being an intermediate player, is the fact that there is no controlled consistent way to practice PvP. What do I mean by that? While there was Arena mode, and now the Hourglass PvP, what both of these have in common is: 1. it is actual combat, not practice; if you sink, you're done. and 2. you do not choose or control who engages with you, and how.

There are people who practice and perfect their skills by actually engaging in actual combat, but I, and a lot of people like me, learn best when certain techniques are practiced and perfected in a controlled setting. Think, for example, "training mode" in other PvP games. This is a problem that I have been struggling with a lot.

Now, Sea of Thieves has announced Safer Seas; basically private servers. It is meant for one primary purpose: game familiarization and training. However, from what I know, you can only have a maximum of a single crew there. To me, that's a wasted opportunity. While it is great to familiarize oneself with the different aspects of Sea of Thieves, there is no harm from using Safer Seas to familiarize oneself with PvP.

And thus, my suggestion: Allow the host of a safer sea session to invite at least a maximum of ONE other crew.

What does that give us, that other modes and contexts in Sea of Thieves don't give us? Imagine with me: you jump in a Safer Seas session, you invite your friend who YOU selected (not a random player) to a second crew. You are in chat, and decide to meet at Galleon's Grave. You duel and duel and duel, practicing swings, gunning, jumping and dodging, and if either of you die, you get revived. Unlike a random, your friend wouldn't just kill you and steal your loot and disappear, not allowing you to perfect your combat. Later, you decide to take it to naval combat. You practice chain shots, repair times, etc. You tell them "time out, reset" and you both stop shooting, repair, and reset the battle.

This is what I've been looking for in the past years I've been playing Sea of Thieves in. Sea of Thieves combat is very fast paced, with too many things to take into account. Making one variable into a constant ("practice mode" with a friend) is something I think a lot of people sorely need.

    FAQ's:

    1. Doesn't that beat the point of Safer Seas?
A: No. The problem with High Seas is not the mere EXISTENCE of other crews, its the fact that they are random players, and act as a factor to actively watch out for and engage with, whether you like it or not, whether you are ready for it or not. Allowing the host to personally INVITE a second crew, and the ability to kick them at any point, maintains the safer, more controlled spirit of Safer Seas.

    2. Why not practice by having combat in High Seas? We've been doing it for years.
A: While it is true that it is not impossible to practice in High Seas, you have to admit, it is a roundabout patchwork way of doing something that other games already provide; a controlled "practice duel arena". You still can't practice consistently, you still cant guarantee that the other crew would participate in your practice without betrayal, and if you lose, your practice is done. It is practice through jumping in the battlefield, rather than....well, practice. No harm comes from implementing this, so why not have the quality of life? It is very reminiscent of the multiple suggestions I made in the past that Rare ended up implementing, such as the ability to purchase storage crates. Others told me "we can do fine without it". Yes, but if there is an opportunity to improve quality of life (in this case, an option for consistent PvP practice), why not strive for better? and Safer Seas are the perfect opportunity for that.

    3. Safer Seas are a client based server. Surely you don't expect that players will be able to host an entire server with their own device?
A: Yes, Safer Seas are client based. Which is why, since the invitation of a second crew is solely for the purposes of PRACTICE, I have no problem with it being limited to only ONE other crew. ONE additional crew is more than enough to fulfill the purposes of PvP practice. And if even that is too much for some players to host, then the good news is, inviting people is an opt-in feature; you don't have to invite someone if your PC cant handle it, and you can continue to enjoy Safer Seas as intended. But for those of us who can host a single other crew, why not enjoy this extremely valuable feature?

    4. I am worried that people will abuse this feature, especially when it comes to commendations that require cooperation with other crews, and are meant to facilitate player interaction.
A: This is a solid point. What I would say to that is, if Rare implements this, I suggest that any commendation requiring participation with other crews to be locked in Safer Seas. Players are already practically "locked out of them" as the facts stand, since at the moment, Safer Seas only allow one crew. Why not make it official and ACTUALLY lock these commendations? It is a relatively simple fix that doesn't change what has already been established for Safer Seas in relation to cooperative commendations (in other words: you're ALREADY practically locked out of them in Safer Seas, so make us OFFICIALLY locked out of them)

In conclusion: While I praise Rare for Arena, hourglass combat, and other efforts done in order to enrich and invigorate the PvP aspects of the game, I think that they have been lacking in terms of opportunities to practice combat in a consistent controlled manner. It is not their fault though; it is hard to implement an entirely separate feature for that alone. However, Safer Seas is the perfect opportunity for that. And while it may seem counter intuitive to add a feature that supports PvP in an essentially PvE domain, it is not. My suggestion ADDS a dimension of practice and PvP FAMILIARITY, while respecting and maintaining the spirit of lower intensity, getting familiar with the game, and lowering the intimidation that new players may experience in High Seas Sea of Thieves.

I hope Rare sees this, and for those of you in the community, I would love to hear your thoughts on this (though I suggest you check the FAQ section above first, as I might've already addressed your concerns about this).

  • Not even released and as expected…players are wanting Safer Sea to be changed. :)

  • holy heck hourglass is already practice, yea i get it that you cant control how your opponent plays but that's a good thing, you arent going to practice against "controlled" opponents whatever that means and then after your practice fight "controlled" randos. You play like you train, just queue up with base supplies and lob some cannons into people its not that complicated.

  • If you're in same region as friend then queuing for hourglass at same time usually has pretty good results, def a lot quicker than launching servers at same time

Are they though? Has this been officially confirmed anywhere at all? Or is this a "trust me/Falcore bro" moment?

Isn't the whole sea, the waves, made by servers somewhere?

  • @schwammlgott Yes, but servers in a data centre somewhere, not a local server running on someone's Xbox One...

  • @thepretenduk

Some of us are IT professionals running on PC and if you think we can't spend $10,000 on an enterprise level rig to run a game engine server side ask me for the specs on my friend's pc...

  • With the launch of Safer Seas it will be possible to practice PvP in Open Seas, as in theory, players with a minimally decent skill level will be available to play against.

  • I cant read all of this because its a bit much, but i would say that actual combat not allowing you to control who or how a fight will go is a good thing for learning. Practicing with another crew and being able to plan and predict what each other will do will NOT ready you for those crews who will do the most unexpected things at unexpected times, and will just build muscle memory based on artificial planned fights.

They aren't. It's still server based except it's got stuff turned off and limited to one ship. Not sure where he got the idea that they are running client side.

Falcore said something like that in a YT video.

  • The only way I see this working is if loot etc. was turned off when two crews where on the seas or you have safer HG with being able to select your opponent. But what I would see happening is bad players would pair up, and stay bad. More over it risks people never joining the high seas. So I do not think Rare will do this. However you still can.

If you want to practice this way then get everyone to start a ship at the same time. All raise Athena in the tavern, and everyone reports how many Athena's there are on their table. If you get a match (eg. you both have three), one person drops and re-raises over and over and if the other players sees the ships toggle as well then you are on the same seas. You can do the same trick with reapers, OG reaper mark etc. Takes a few starts but eventually you will have two or more ships on the same server. You can all sail to one corner of the map and fight. Ally up as well so you can see where each others ships are.

Yup, it’s from Falcore’s reaction video, the first one. It’s an assumption and one that makes sense for a lot of other games, but knowing how SoT works, I don’t see all supported devices being able to handle it(looking at you Xbox One)

  • I think this would be a decent idea.
When I came back, I needed to practice and the only way I could do that was to ask my HG opponent to help me in exchange for me throwing. I only had as long as it took my boat to sink after I lit it on fire.

Most of the time though, people just thought I was trying to trick them and would not let me board. Which meant boarding without permission and getting like 1 to 3 rounds tops.

No amount of PVE will prepare someone for PVP. Skeletons guard their backs unlike any player so players don't develop the skill of backstabs. I may be mistaken here, but I'm pretty sure players can shoot through their allies too because it seems like using them as cover against each other always fails for me. But skeletons can be used as cover against other skeletons.

Then with naval, the skeleton ships act like alien vessels. They stop in a second and turn on a dime, all without even touching sails or anchor. The only PVP training you'll get from them is learning to board a galleon and keep them from healing/shooting.

I think this might also be a way to combat against alliance servers. Without as much support, they'll be less available. Which may in turn produce more folks taking a chance on the high seas.

Not changed, but added upon. I am happy with Safer Seas. I've been waiting for something like that. I want it to allow me to get familiarized with MORE aspects of the game.

Practicing with another crew and being able to plan and predict what each other will do will NOT ready you for those crews who will do the most unexpected things at unexpected times, and will just build muscle memory based on artificial planned fights.

And that type of random practice wouldnt be magically removed with the introduction of my suggestion. My suggestion will ADD a new kind of practice, not change the current way pirates battle.
As for this not preparing you for actual combat; sure. But that can be said about anything and any game. There are aspects of combat that can only be practiced in real situations, but that doesn't mean that there are aspects that cannot be successfully trained outside of it. There is no tangible consistent way for you to go against your friend in battle. Just think about it. You cannot allow friendly fire in the same crew, you cannot invite a friend to a server you happen to be in as a part of a different crew, nothing.

And yes, all of these come with their own plethora of problems, from balancing issues, to grind abuse. Isn't the allowing of a player to battle a friend a basic feature? and isn't my suggestion of implementing that to Safer Seas, frankly, the best opportunity to implement this without worrying about grind abuse and experience balancing on the High Seas?

  • @arasanpynkflame nah

  • Safer seas isn't designed for players wanting to improve their PvP skills. Its target audience is families with younger players and others who want to enjoy the storytelling and PvE elements of the game without the hassle of constantly having to look over their shoulder or having to worry about unpleasant strangers.

A more suitable solution are custom servers in which all commendations, gold, doubloons, exp are turned off but players can essentially join and leave any server they please.

  • Your practise is on the High Seas. You don’t get better by winning fights against easy players.

  • @tesiccl I actually didn't get any chainshot practice until I got matched with players trying to run. Everyone who uses chainshot at all had better aim than me bc I'd never done it before and once they'd get me it'd be time to board so I couldn't practice then either. I only had 4 shots to waste so I didn't wanna waste them at range.

So you do get better by practicing against dummies when your baseline is 0.

  • @tesiccl I addressed this in the actual suggestion, the FAQ section of my suggestion, and multiple times here in the replies.

  • @jumbie7311 why cant it be both? its quite literally a single small addition that can provide both instead of one.

  • @arasanpynkflame
This is a good idea / would they spawn on same island for theme practice or different island for high seas simulation
