Hit Reg needs more attention...

    Greeting All,

    I know everyone is well aware of hit reg being an issue. Shots not doing damage and even the sword suffers as well. As someone who enjoys the pvp aspect of SoT, it's frustrating to hit another player 6 times with a sword after hitting them with a blunderbuss on the ladder to get anchored regardless. Also, watching 2 players shoot another 4 times without eating and they appear unfazed. At this point in the game how prevelant the issue still is, borders on a lack of caring and it seems its on the bottom of the list of priorities. It's my opinion we in the community need to ring the alarm bell until this issue is focused on by Rare. Or all of us can continue to suffer in silence.

    As someone who doesn't enjoy the pvp aspect of SoT, it still needs attention.

    But constantly bringing it up is not going to fix it faster.

    I mean, it isn't like they don't already know...

    It's always mentioned in the patch notes.
    So it's logically a problem deeply rooted in the game. Who knows what that is since we don't have the source code and/or UE4 Files that the game runs on. Is network? Is it a multiple bugs in the code regarding water physics? Who knows.

    Sometimes I wonder what this game could be like if it was ever imported to EU5 and used the nanite mesh Feature...

    That's not what follows from that. It's mentioned in every patch notes, because regardless of how the devs change the balance/tradeoff, some players will always complain about it either way.

    It's perpetually mentioned because the devs are perpetually trying to address the multiple different, often conflicting, underlying issues that cause the whole umbrella of effects that players call "hit reg". It's impossible to fix in a way that satisfies everyone, but the devs keep trying earnestly to satisfy players by solving the impossible anyway.

    They need less complaints and more gratitude that things work as well as they do.

    It really isn't. There's like whole articles in science journals about it and sh-aving cream. In the end, it's actually quite impossible to solve "hit reg" so that everyone is happy.

    Sometimes it even seems hard to release reskins people actually want too though, so you know...

    Indeed, I really hope they just keep denying hitreg and any form of anticheat and keep releasing rekins or content with more bugs than the current state of the game! It's so refreshing to play.

    What do you think they are denying?

    The anti-cheat they have is pretty decent, 99% of cheating complaints dissolve when you start asking questions and looking for evidence. "Aimbot" complaints are pretty much always a case of a poorly skilled player getting owned by an experienced player and not being able to accept it - any REAL actual evidence would be accepted by Rare and the cheater banned, so there would be no reason for them to complain in the forums about it.

    unlikely to ever actually significantly improve

    it's 5 years in and really only leans towards worse and rarely towards better

    with all the content lag, treasure lag, and them regularly trying to maintain 6 ships we are probably lucky any shots register lol

    just something we gotta work around

    literally everyone that plays legit gets wrecked by it sometimes so it's something most go through, and all of us benefit from it sometimes too.

    @sandfeld2004 it is really clear to me you have not an inkling if a clue to how software/game development works.

    And you keep making posts like this in which you think you are making a point however you are in fact just making a fool of yourself.

    Yes the hitreg issue needs to be fixed however it is a very complex issue that is not simply fixed with a bandaid

    And yes there are cheaters in the game, as there are with any online game and it is very hard to keep competing with “script kiddies” that can make a small fortune by releasing cheat software all the while having little to no investment while a company has to defend against said cheating software while paying a large team of people a living wage.

    Does hitreg need to be fixed ? Yes ! Does the issue with cheaters need to be fixed ? Yes !

    However a cosmetic artist will add nothing to the development towards said fixes it is like asking a painter to create a fix for gasoline cars using to much fossil fuels.

    In the mean time you do you and make yourself feel good about posting these nonsensical posts

    Where are they denying hit reg issues?
    They are well aware of it as they are with the issue of cheaters. Both have been talked about in their recent podcasts as has the hit reg issue been confirmed in multiple recent patch notes.

    Asking a graphical designer to fix hit reg is like asking van gogh to fix healthcare

    I get your point, but it's also impossible to get actual evidence of people shooting cannons and hitting every single target. It's also hard to stop aimbot, I get that. But stuff like teleporting and speedhacking should be detectable. It's no wonder that 99% of cheating complaints get dissolved because it is hard to get pure evidence unless they are using it obviously. The thing is, with season 8, they should have done more with their "current anti-cheat,", starting with IP and hardware bans. Yea, even look at the public Discord servers selling cheats, where there are basically customers with Xboxes linked. You say their anti-cheat is decent, which isn't the case if cheaters are allowed to teleport or speedhack through the seas.

    Stuff like IP, hardware bans should be implented among an actual decent anti-cheat. Right now its simply get banned, and buy the xbox-pass for 1$ while leveling up their main/friends.

    Sure they arent denying hit-reg because they put it into their patch note everytime with all the new fancy reskins. Just because you keep addressing the problem, does not solve the problem does it? Point is they dont focus it enough at all compared to the new content.

    Im not asking their graphical designer to fix hit reg.

    It's not like there is much to compare it to

    It's a unique and complex environment. It might have a lot of combat related issues but we don't really have anything to go off of to gauge how well they are or aren't doing on it. They could be doing great with what they have to work with, dunno.

    Overall the game is playable for most of its participants and many of the participants aren't pvp focused so there is a lot to consider beyond just annoying performance issues.

    Yea, SoT is a complex game, and I understand it can be hard to fix compared to other games because of the environment. I just find it hard to believe they are actually trying when it keeps getting worse, not only in terms of hit-reg but also with performance and ping. And it isn't helping with the new content getting released, which is also necessary to maintain their player base, I know.

    I have been playing since early 2019, and the game has got nothing but better since I started as far as I can tell.

    they take pride in their work and the product, that is obvious by the quality of the product being offered

    nobody that feels that way about what they create wants to hear people regularly saying how their product isn't working well or that they don't care or aren't trying to work it out.

    They have no interest or incentive to allow performance to have issues. If they say they are working on it there isn't any reason to think they aren't taking it serious imo

    Ip bans do nothing, way to easy to circumvent however hardware (HWID) bans should be a thing and for all we know they are working on stuff like this. However with stuff like cheating there is multiple issues at play to combat it:

    1. You cannot in any way shape or form talk about any of the systems in play/development because it can give the parties creating cheating software a leg up to circumvent said systems

    2. Even if you have 100 employees working on systems to combat cheaters of which all need to be paid (around $ 62.000 per year per employee on average) there will be a 1000 script kiddies working on ways around said systems that don’t need to be paid and can work on it 24/7 since they don’t have to follow any sort of employment laws.

    2.1 lets say they have 5 employees working on the issue with cheaters with an average pay of 60k a year which means that is a 300k a year investment (excluding any other sort of benefits cost they offer their employees also excluding any sort of extra costs that always come around having a employee at work meaning this 300k could easily be a 1m dollar investment per year) with no direct way to get a return on said investment.

    The point is the team(s) working on new cosmetics/reskins have nothing to add to the pointed out issues, that is why i stated the graphical designers case. In fact adding stuff to emporium is the main way how they can fund the development of general new content but also the previously mentioned costs to battling cheats and in extension to that the hit reg issues.

    And apart from the patch notes i cannot divulge any deeper on the ways i know they are not ignoring/denying hit registration issues the thing is i know for a fact they are working on the betterment of that however i am not allowed to discuss about the details of that.

    @quickdicken69 You've got a pretty creative development team dealt a bad hand (Azure servers) and just way too much foundation (5 years of content developed with about 70% of it still intact since the game's release) to sit there and not create any content at all just so the promise of the game's most difficult issue to solve is handled.

    I'm no game developer, but that is a really dumb way to kill your game, especially when you can't squash every issue without doing a full on rework of everything in the game, and your game, without much to really go off of, is a flagship title for a service millions of people will access for a month for $1, with tons of armchair developers (like a fair amount of the people in this thread) saying whatever they think is right and expected of a dev team that, for all we have learned, have an insanely healthy development cycle, and a vision they intend to keep for the entirety of the game's tenure.

    But sure, we're just defending a development team for "being lazy" on a massive game they've likely never dabbled in before this.

    Dont worry they actively working into it since 2018. Meanwhile buy some emporium stuff to improve server stabilty.

    I find it funny how they recently stated that only 1 out of 10 bullets would hitreg, then cut to the next day when you are still shooting someone with every single bullet in your inventory and they still just run around your ship completely fine. gotta love it.
