Verify availability before confirming the ship naming + list of forbidden words

  • Hello Everyone,

I've recently bought a ship and i saw that some words we're not allowed (like sea or men) for naming, after a few try i've finally managed to find an appropriate name but it was instantly named that way.
What i'm thinking about is what if we could see all the banned words & wordplay and also get access to a name checker (ingame or why not on a website) we could use before applying a definitve name for our glorious ships.

What do you think about it?

  • It's a reasonable request but the cynic in me tells me it would be used to cause more harm than good

    @xxweegeeplxx

I mean this. I have a very colorful vocabulary of obscenities. Tell me what I can get away with and I will teach you some new things lol.

I think names should be reviewed with explanations via ticket. Maybe lol. You can't name your ship Rum Runner for some reason.

  • I think the problem here and something to think about is... the complexities that an automated system cant work out.

Wether it be regional or social contexts... Thats why I think Player Support are better placed to respond and react to ship names that may cross lines that you may not be aware of. Especially when two or more words are used together...

  • @musicmee Why is it so unreasonable for you guys to provide a list? You can't honestly expect us to be aware or to go on a journey finding out if our ship name offends anyone before we name it, especially if there wasn't any intention to. I know some people are scoundrels about their dirty or obscene ship names but others aren't

  • @n0soup4u

Because a lot of us know complexities of our own language to say offensive things an AI may not pick up.

    Waffles of twattenshire!

  • @n0soup4u because providing a list of rude words blocked in a 12 rated game would probably get Rare and Microsoft the wrong sort of publicity and once you have said list of words you can start thinking of creative ways to bypass that list.

@Musicmee Can you clarify the policy on bad ship names. If I have some fun with the naming system and name my ship something slightly risqué. Will it always result in you can't name any more ships or are you able to issue a warning and force the renaming of that one ship?

Plus, what a headache: "Support su__s, they made me change and the name I choose was not even on the list"

  • Sea of Thieves is already very very VERY fond of censorship beyond what a reasonable person might consider inappropriate (rolling on deck laughing, for example) so it's only reasonable that you're at least given a warning first.

  • @phantaxus Perhaps I misspoke, doesn't have to be the list itself, but a simple "you cannot choose this name". There will be grumbling and groaning because of how in offensive words get banned for whatever reason, like in other games how some innocent word combinations get filtered by the "space" wildcard, or the classic dark souls "knight" being censored, but that's fine, at least we know.

Point is, why can't they come up with something and stick to it. Listen, it's developed by an English company and the censorship rules should apply to the known English obscenities' and vulgarities. If your culture or language is insulted by Backflippin Blue Baby Duck, then I'm sorry it's not offensive to us and we cannot possibly hope to know all of that which is offensive

  • I think the whole "Big.....Energy" story got everyone spooked with how far they can take their immaturity.

I just hope that Rare has a sense of humor, and understands how/why their game is rated the way it is regionally as they evaluate reports of inappropriate ship names.

  • @n0soup4u they already have a screen that tells you it is inappropriate, it’s just after you purchase the ship and you are prompted to pick a different name until one works. So probably what they should do is not let you pay for it until it is appropriate. Move the screen that comes after purchase to before it. Then you’d be able to reroll names without the time stress of having to decide same session if it’s difficult to come up with something you like.

  • @abjectarity ahh I understand, yeah that would be nice.

I'd say a pattern of messaging and enforcement but I wouldn't say censorship. It's more just moderation with a few topics they aren't gonna be lenient about but that generally applies to being insensitive towards people or groups of people which is just moderation in a shared environment.

When I look at the forums, or the encounters I have on the seas, or the partners and streamers they associate themselves with it's all a pretty diverse bunch of personalities, views, and behavior. Sure, there are cliques that are very similar in views or behavior but overall people generally do and say what they want as long as it isn't sexually inappropriate or targeting and unkind.

If they were actually fond of censorship they would have more posts deleted on the forums than what currently happens. Mainly they have a vibe and they are trying to maintain that vibe through discretion of the stated rules which isn't really the same as censorship.

Something that is important to remember in an environment that embraces family friendly and in any shared diverse environment with many different interests is that not everyone signed up to see people's sexual humor. Not everyone wants to glass boats and see some of the stuff that people think is funny and/or clever and in an environment with adults and minors some of the stuff is just not appropriate. That doesn't make people bad for finding humor in something or trying to be clever but it's not censorship for the host to bounce it out.

  • A private company stopping you from naming your ship a sexual reference or a slavery reference is not censorship. It's reasonable moderation.

Seen way too many people complaining about "Well why can't I name my ship something offensive in a PG game?"

Having an extensive list of bad words in a kid's game wouldn't be the best idea.

  • if ya can pass the screen and buy the ship withthe name selected its unreasonable to hold it against the player. Also name availability should be confirmed by the game before funds are removed

  • @animeowl0807 Cause most people that play this arent kids. It may look like a friendly game but Sea of Thieves is not the place for casuals . They dont last long. And most kids are just that, casual players

@IIDROGOSII As a side note, I am as casual as they come when it comes to playing Sea of Thieves and yet have been around for longer than many. (Alpha, June 2017).

Just because a minority wants the game to be a competitive FPS TDM, doesn't make it so.
