Megalodon Spawn Rates

  • I can’t be the only one who has noticed that megs are spawning significantly less. As I have only recently picked up the game, about a month ago, I have not encountered a single meg. Years ago I could run into 5 in just a single session. As a commendation hunter and just as a regular player, these low spawn rates greatly reduce my chances of ever encountering the shrouded ghost (if it’s even real).
Additionally, sailing as it is, is downright boring. With little to no added threat or excitement that a meg encounter brings, sailing has become increasingly barren. Playing shanties and downing grog can only entertain you for so long during a lengthy voyage, please Rare, bring back our beloved megs.

P.S. I hope my rng isn’t just terrible and am writing this looking like a fool.

You're no fool, you are an observant pirate

a few things happened over time, they implemented pve nerfs which had an effect, the map is becoming crowded which had an effect, and there are other things like shipwrecks that have an effect

The hunt never stays the same, things change and megs act different every few months but overall it's been rough for people for well over a year

All you can really do is invest in a server for at least an hour, you might need 2, nothing is guaranteed we are just giving ourselves the best odds.

don't sink or merge, to not merge I just never raise my sails or anchor in situations where I am likely to merge.

Think of merges and sinks like timer resets, it's not exact but I have done extensive testing over the years to optimize my efficiency and merges/sinks are generally terrible for meg hunting efficiency.

  • I was under the impression that when events are active Kraken, Skeleton Ships and Megs were not?

    only kraken

skelly ships and megs randomly spawn

when an event finishes/despawns it'll despawn skelly ships that are free roaming around and new ones will take their place

  • Did skelly ships start spawning when the fleet was up?

  • Not the first time I've heard the claim, but I stilled get megged just as often as always.

What does sails or anchor have anything to do with merging?

I have been merged while parked in an outpost selling loot. (No anchor of course).

Dont remember if I ever was merged while anchored, but if you can be merged parked in an outpost I do not see how would anchor have any effect or have any logical reason to have any effect.

People largely merge when they are on a still/slow moving boat and when they raise the anchor

very often happens after finishing a world event or killing off something like a skelly ship

I sink significant amounts of skelly ships so I get merged a lot (especially with how season 8 content is designed) so I avoid stopping my ship or slowing it down.

so certain times during my session that matter to my goals I reduce the odds by avoiding what I know to have the higher chances of merging me

  • Also Kraken is rare, i remember you used to see him at least once per session either on you, or attacking others, but now he's nowhere to be found.
I have also noticed the spawn rates for both meg and kraken increase when you have bigger crews and more loot on your boat.

  • Megs have seemed less frequent for me but maybe try sailing in the Roar? I grinded around 30 ashen vaults yesterday and while sailing between Fetchers Rest and Ashen Reaches I ran into 6 megs and 4 skeleton ships. Thats a big difference for me by just changing locations.
I don't know what the prerequisites are to spawn one so sorry if none show up for you.

  • Alright let's cut out the superstition about "it's rare" "it's common" "it's only when I have a lot of loot on board". Chances are, Wolf is right here. Meg spawns may have been changed behind the scenes and new parameters are set for them to spawn. However, a lot of blame can also be put to the new locations and portals added to the seas to help expand content immensely, while inadvertently undermining older ones.

Meg spawns may be very consistent in the Roar because it has less content within it, but the far off-grid parts of the map that used to be part of the Devil's Shroud, are also very easy ways to get megs to spawn, because there are little to no obstacles or points of interest that often occur there.

Skeleton ships, from observation, seem to be around and about whenever the skeleton fleet in the middle of the map is not the current world event in the server. Outside of that, they spawn as usual, though, forced emergent encounters have drastically decreased, relatively around Season 8's launch.

The Kraken is a chance encounter that occurs when a world event has recently cleared/despawned from the server. Any boat in open water (and additionally, not in an Hourglass fight) has the chance to be attacked by a Kraken. You can also leave an outpost as a fresh new spawn and get attacked by a kraken, it does not matter how much loot you have on board, that's just your paranoia getting to you haha.

  • @pithyrumble seems that way

  • Yah these things are like dead.

  • Megs are almost extinct. Forget about the Shrouded Ghost - it IS a myth for us these days.
Come to think of it, haven't had a skelly ship spawn on me for quite a while either.

Can we increase the spawn rates please!
