Tall Tales

  • I'm running through the Tall Tales again. Honestly I had forgotten how fun these things are. I'm glad these are on demand. I feel like I'm part of the lore when I run these, a true explorer. We could use more!

  • It's ridiculous how confusing and difficult they are for new players or even any player without a guide but they are wonderful

When it comes to tall tale type of content, and music, storytelling, lore, design of items and objects, NPC interactions and reactions, that's where the devs really do an awesome job in the game.

People focus on the action and the interactions and all that and that's great but I think many years from now people will fondly look back on the storytelling of the game. I still enjoy looking through the books at the design and immersing in the story and appreciating the art and creativity that went into it.

I love a lot about this game but one of my favorite things is seeing people getting excited about doing a tall tale with their friends. Magical.

  • The first time I went through the Tall Tales, I was too paranoid about getting attacked by other players. So, I rushed through them. Now that I have nearly all the cosmetics, commendations, and money I've wanted, I can retake these and really take my time. Soaking it in. So much more enjoyable.

it's beautiful how much effort they put into the story of a multiplayer game like this

the random interaction, the happenstance threat, that all adds thrill but the quality of the content at the center of that activity is nothing other than lovely imo, it captures what so many started here for, adventure, story, connection to the environment and to the other players around

setting criticisms of irrelevant things aside the quality of their tall tales and the improvement they have made with adventures shows they still have a dedication to adventure, to storytelling.
I adore Briggsy, the adventurer, wonderful character.
The legendary storyteller has one of my favorite books
Stars of the thief is a beautiful journey. Sudds is awesome. That tall tale is truly something special imo.
Wild rose, The Princess Bride of the tall tales, romance done right.
The Trickster, what a nightmare inducing piratical trap infested traumafest that one is
Seabound soul had that journey and sot music that really leaves an impact

There is something to revisiting content years later, after the gold has been made and the commendations completed. A new way to appreciate the experience.

  • They're great. We need more of them.

Wouldn't it be nice to have more repeatable content? The adventures seem like a wasted effort in comparison.

  • I enjoy them but I do prefer the time specific adventures as the progression is linked to the state of the world at the time of release. I find it strange that at any point we can go back and release flameheart

  • @hiradc "Ashen Arc" should get some rework to be more like memory of whole event.

But it stuff you cloud easly RP in your mind.

No, honestly the tall tales are a huge waste of development time. The OP is rare. Most people don't go back and replay tall tales. They are stale and boring once you've done them the required 5 times for gold curse. They have systems in place that need to be constantly maintained. As the world moves forward it needs to be adjusted around tall tales. I would rather the world be able to move forward without maintaining old stories.

No, honestly the tall tales are a huge waste of development time.

How ? I mean they're done. They've been for years. Noone is working on these anymore. It might have been a waste, but you can't say that in present tense.

What is a waste of resources (voiceovers and mocap but not too much dev since it's mainly old mechanics) is adventures that are "thrown away".

The OP is rare. Most people don't go back and replay tall tales.

Yet some do. I could say the same about PvP or hourglass or anything (fishing, commendations, ...)

They are stale and boring once you've done them the required 5 times for gold curse.

I agree. 5 times ? Why ? I mean you could at least try to cover the fact you're artificially lenghtening the game with something, no ? Rare ? What ? 100 veils ? 1000 fish ? last title at lvl 9999 ? Oh OK I see what you need is a therapist, quickly. One just does not do this to one's players. It's called sadism.

They have systems in place that need to be constantly maintained. As the world moves forward it needs to be adjusted around tall tales.

Like what ? I can't find any example ? Many the volcanos deactivating with one TT ? They are implemented within adventure mode pretty
good if you ask me. Can't remember even ONE occurrence of a Tall Taler influencing on my journey to be honest. They usually do their own stuff and are pleased to be left alone.

As for the world moving forwards, I agree. You just can't make the Golden Sands stuff into a Tall Tale, for example. But the return of Flameheart should DEFINITELY have been a TT in my opinion, since the "beginning" was. Now people have no way to experience this, while it would have been possible with a TT format. (but again, hhow do you make the FH/Pendragon choice then ? But was there really a choice ?)

I guess my point is why not use both ? They both have pros and cons.

  • i have not one bad word for the Tall Tales , they are compared , for me , as Tales of Lore written in Old Forgotten Tomes . And i would stand next to you , sheer , support your question for more Tall Tales . Tall Tales are replayable every minute of the day , but ... Some Tall Tales have found successors of that story , or proceedings , sadly i lack the right word , in those new Adventures , the biggest dissapointment about these is that they are short , easy but only playable in a 2 weeks time space ... If life gives you a hell of a wallopping and you simply can't play one or more Adventures , then you lose the string of stories that are told in these , time limited , Adventures . Having build forward on some excisting Tall Tales , makes that some New Pirates will never catch the full lore of Sea of Thieves , which is already spread out in Novelbooks , comicbooks and so on... These things are solid and still available to catch up with , with some effort , Adventures ,however , are over and done with after two weeks , nomatter if you had the time or not ... i find that sad and ...cold.

  • @jolly-ol-yep the present tense is because of how things happen. For example if Rare wants to use crooks hollow for a new adventure, they need to make sure it doesn't interfere with existing tales. We can't just kill off an npc that starts a tale or change an island that has it. Look at the unmarked where magpies wing is. Can't change that island drastically with out it impacting multiple tales.

This is part of why I think they chose Golden Sands. It was a very low impact island as far as systems to maintain. The next would be Galleons Grave.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the tall tales, I absolutely did. But I enjoy the new adventures more because I'm not forced to redo them over and over.

  • @captain-coel

Ok I get it. This is very true.

You're making me change my mind here, or at least reconsider things a lot ! GG !
