Expected queue times wildly inaccurate

  • I know they've said based roughly on recent queues

Today I had duo queue reaper sloop xbox only show 10 mins plus, adjusted to 6-10 mins by the time we dived. Got an instant battle. Had this twice
At this point you might aswell lie and always promise instant queue as the larger queue time estimations are more likely to put people off and stop them from queueing thus making it a self perpetuating prophecy.
To be honest just an indication of the ratio between populations queuing in comparison to encourage people to queue the other side and balance it might be better. I know they've already said will allow fighting same faction so this would be redundant

  • Tbh the player base is lacking. There just isn't enough people playing the game, then on top of that there isn't enough players matchmaking. This is why they closed Arena because most players aren't interested in PvP. The player most interested in PvP have moved on to other games. I myself have been away from SoT for months now, I revisit from time to time hoping Rare has added something significant but that has yet to happen. All of my old crewmates and friends have gone on to play other games. I hate to say it but SoT is a dying game, we see a surge around the beginning of the seasons but it quickly drops back off. Big streamers are rarely playing the game anymore as well.

  • My thing is that the queue times are completely false.

There is no way that 1-2 minutes = never getting a match.

It makes me think they are just looking at matches across the game instead of what is inside our "stamp" or server group.

I'd rather log in and know right away "No ships queueing on your server group." versus just waiting and hoping something pops when it says less than one minute or something.

Completely unacceptable how it is because the queue times are rarely accurate.

Getting told to switch servers, regions, boats, jump PC to Xbox vice versa is ridiculous.

  • Oh yeah, it’s completely inaccurate. Idk why they even bothered to have that there if it never actually tells you the matchmaking times

  • My experience of match-making times in the admittedly small number of hourglassses I've activated (about 7 or 8), has been positvie. The longest I have waited is about ten minutes. The other day my friend and I had an estimation of over ten minutes, but it was actually less than one minute and we were rising up out of the water. All on Xbox only.

  • @hiradc

The expected queue time aren’t always inaccurate but I can understand your frustration.

The queue times are averaging between the matchmaking times from previous wait times. The problem is after a few losses which I have experienced myself, my crew quits on me. So by that logic, the 2 minutes it took to match me with the winners is added to the hourglass and now the winners must now wait 20 minutes for a match because no one will challenge them. Now you come in. The matchmaking says 20 minutes because the winners have been waiting that long. You match up in a minute and defeat them. They resupply and come back again. The hourglass averages 10 minutes even though you get matched in a minute again. See where I’m going with this?

The hourglass updates regularly so I wouldn’t let it completely discourage you. If anything use it to decide what faction to represent, assuming that you aren’t going for a specific curse

  • I have had queue times that said less than a minute, and when i go on attack it takes over 5 minutes, and i have had some that say 6-8 minutes and i get raided in less than 1.

  • 4-6 minutes seems to be the quickest for me. More than 10 minutes and 2-4 minutes have been roughly the same, less than one minute and 1-2 minutes is always a lie :(

  • Well for me I almost never experience the timer to be faster then predicted, but almost everytime I wait for 10.15, 20 mins. We had to skipp it sometimes entirelly because the "4-6 minutes" turned out to not give us a fight at all, in 20-30 mins wait time... so, yeah.

I really appreciate the system in itself, i appreciate all the awesome changes they managed to pull of the last years,

but i too wish for accurate information. And if its not possible, bec no players queue, its alright, i dont mind. but i dont want to spend my time waiting in vain!

  • @coffeelight5545 I'm not letting it discourage me, I still queue as I've seen them be wrong enough to distrust. My point is a lot of people may look at those estimated times and think not worth it
There's a balance here between dev transparency and gamer psychology.

I don't trust the community to always know what they want or what is best for them.

All these cries for make the curses easier people want to grind them out then abandon the game until the next content comes in and playerbase suffers. People who are loyal and consistent to the game think yeah it's a grind but I'm not worried I'll get it eventually.

This is why I'm saying I'm not sure showing times esp when they can be this inaccurate is a good idea. I'm not claiming to have answers here

  • @hiradc

I think that people want the curses to be easier to obtain is because in 2 years or less this new PvP mode will die as the Arena did. The matchmaking and wait times are the same as they were in the Arena. Since the Arena only made up 2% of the player base it was shut down. Normally that’s not a problem but all Arena earned cosmetics are now legacy and no one new can earn it. Imagine how you would feel if you were unable to earn the new curses because Rare shuts down the hourglass mode.

What percentage of the player base make up the Hourglass PvP aspect of SoT?

  • @coffeelight5545 I've always suspected the 2% was a bit misleading. I suspect it was 2% comparable playtime compared with 2% of playerbase accessing (although I could be wrong). This is why they've made this mode within normal adventure so there isn't a separation

At the current time, it’s unclear. The problem is that everyone played the arena at first but only about 2% of the player base continued playing the arena. This new PvP mode is popular but only because it’s a new concept in a year Rare will be able to measure the Hourglass player base.

There are differences between this new mode and the Arena but they are so similar that once the novelty wears off there won’t be enough players to support the hourglass mode

Yea, honestly if you don't get the curses by the end of the season you probably won't (1). I bet hourglass dies the same death as arena before season 9 starts.

    1. The only hope is Rare opens up allegiance gains via PVE content, or dramatically increases the allegiance reward for a loss. I understand why they didn't start with that, they wanted players to try hourglass and not merely grind losses. But unfortunately the bulk of players are simply not enjoying it. 🤷‍♂️
  • I can't imagine getting upset about instant battles.
I played for over three hours today. Got two matches, one being against a reaper alliance.
The entire match making system is trash. I would be extremely embarrassed to be team leader on this project. I have no idea how much time and money was dumped into this situation.
Rare should maybe hire someone who actually has experience with PVP games.
No other game would survive on this kind of performance. The PVE crowd is keeping the game alive now.
Someone please tag me in a post when they fire whoever is responsible for this trash and bring in some competent people.

Are you looking for a job? As a software developer I feel obligated to tell you that finding the balance between a matchmaking system that is fair and short is difficult. Typically it's one or thee other, fast lopsided matches, or close matches but long queue time.

I think they did a good job for a first release, with room for improvement moving forward. One of the most difficult lessons I learned in the industry is that companies make money off of products that are 80% complete, and the price of perfection is prohibitive. This is a good system for a first pass, and they've already announced a release for the fix.

Managing your impatience is not Rare's responsibility.

  • I would just hire someone from one of dozens of teams that know how to get it right. It actually is their job to keep us happy and motivated to play the game.
If I were to hire someone for a game project it wouldn't be anyone who failed so miserably here. I understand your take. Simpin ain't easy. 😉

  • @lordqulex

I can understand Rare not giving a lot of reputation for losses to discourage people from farming Losses but at the same time, we should get at least half of the allegiance value in the hourglass when we loose. At least this way when we loose our winning streak we still walk away with something.

With the curses being locked behind high levels it encourages alliances because it’s the only way PvE players can achieve the curses. This isn’t fair to other players. I lost an 8 streak progress in a fair fight. I was so upset. Imagine how worse it would be for me if I landed into a 3 vs 1 ship battle?

  • Indeed it seems to be at best, a wildly inaccurate calculation, and at worst completely made up.

    1-2 minutes match making.
takes 15 minutes to find a game.

  • @coffeelight5545

I love the half the value of the streak idea, that's one of the better ideas I've heard on how to change the system.

  • Ive been looking for a match for at least 30 minutes now. Ridiculous

  • @captgraykid did you actually read my post? I wasn't upset about an instant battle, I was questioning the value of estimated times when they're so far off....but sure
