Brig "popcorn"

  • Hello!

With the now long implemented review and changes to Sloop vertical knockup/knockback (aka popcorning), I think it's time to give that same treatment to the Brigantine. As someone who primarily sloop PvP'ed in Arena, Adventure and now Sea of Bones the changes were very welcome in a time where every 3rd cannon would knock one of your crew members off of the ship.

The same problem however exists for brig in which the following common situations occurs when your boat takes hits:

    • You get knocked forward off of your boat from a cannon that hits behind you (understandable)
    • You get knocked backward off of your boat from a cannon that hits behind you (questionable)
    • You get knocked straight up in the air several meters when at/near the stairs
    • You get knocked upstairs from below deck, or even worse - off the ship entirely. This one should never happen.

    They already nerfed blunderbombs.

    Stop.

    "stop" what?

Blunderbombs and their spammy use was awful, it didn't require any level of skill - you simply needed to hit ANYWHERE on the enemies ship and you would turn them AND damage the crew. There are actual problem remaining to be addressed in PvP.

  • It's not just blunderbombs I got popcorned from the stairs between top and mid deck on a galley by a cannonball just yesterday

  • @im-ltr Vertical knockback, area of effect and amounts of blunderbombs you can find have been nerfed in the last patch.

This has nothing to do with blunderbombs, I am talking about cannonball shots on a brig and the current state of popcorn for that specific ship. People seem confused to that fact but those people clearly have not been playing the new PvP mode on a brig.

  • I have been playing brig since seasson 8 started daily. Blunder bomb nerf was very welcome but popcorn problem on brig is real. It is literally only way we sink and it is very annoying cos it happens so often and so irregular from all the angles. And there is not much you can do about it. If you try to dodge cannonball, you still get hit by blast radius and get popcorned.

  • Yeah its pretty ridiculous. As it stands now the cannonball knockback on brigantine is 10x more powerful than blunderbomb knockback.

Im almost certain that this is some kind of a glitch/bug or something because it just makes no sense whatsoever that a cannonball sends you rocketing 10m off your ship.

  • The cannonball knockback feels really inconsistent. I mainly play on sloop and every once in a while I’ll get knocked off my ship by a ball that landed nowhere close to me.

Brig battles are just painful with the popcorning all the time though.

  • @im-ltr

Asking for nerfs for every strategy that you can't counter for starters.

Bring something constructive to this post beyond a +1 to your post count and negativity.

"Every strategy"? I'm asking for popcorn to be adjusted on the brig. Popcorn isn't a strategy; one-balling someone, curse balls or ram and tdm are examples of strategies. Sloop had the same issues that Brig has now and it received a review and adjustment that greatly improved gameplay for that ship. I remember every 3 cannon shot somewhat near you on sloop would knock you overboard or send you flying. It doesn't seem like you PvP much, let alone PvP on a brig; otherwise you would likely understand how impactful of an issue it is. Season 8 simply highlights it because you can have on-demand Brig vs. Brig battles, where Arena didn't have a mode for Brigs and in Adventure you were often running up against different types of ships.

  • @im-ltr I know this post is already 2 months old but the problem is still very present. Just came across this thread because I couldn't believe how little people talk about this problem. I completely agree with you. The popcorn of the ship from below deck, almost made me quit brig entirely. This has to be a bug cause its clearly completely random. In some instanced you fly up half the way of the main mast after a cannonball hits near you. I wonder if that's a glitch which resulted from the blunder bomb nerf

  • Yep when bucketing on stairs and i fly half way up the mast it's ridiculous

Is popcorning how people are skipping the top-of-the-ladder animation when they're boarding?

Popcorn is cannonball knockback. I've watched high tier players NOT get popcorned on brigs. Me and my older play double brigs sometimes and we don't get Popcorned.

I think it's more of people running into competitive crews than know how the game works and are using it.

NO ONE complained about Blunderbomb spam before S8.

  • I think it's just part of the game and it works both ways. Putting holes in some ones ship and managing to knock them of it, would most likely lead you to victory. This is an incentive to choose naval, over spawn camping to protect holes - we try to do both when we PVP. If anyone knows how to exactly 'popcorn' or where to aim, apart from cannons. Would be appreciated.

I cant remember a single instance where I would get vertically knocked from lower deck to the upper one.

  • @zig-zag-ltu they're just aiming for stairs once you have holes, people don't use the grate on brig to bucket.

  • @hiradc In a back and forth cannon fire fight, if someone can hit the stairs consistently, hats off to them. The crew getting hit should hit back at their cannons, sail off etc, if all 3 need to bucket and repair, being 'popcorned' is not what lost them the fight, that's just icing on the cake. The other crew just simply outclassed them imo.

P.S. If they would not get spammed there, then someone would board them and kill them while they are busy bailing.

  • The reason the Sloop got popcorn reduction changes is because a solo getting knocked off their ship means a 98% chance of game over.

The same conditions do not exist on the Brig. There are 3 people on the crew which means a good likelihood that there will always be at least 1 person who can attempt to sail the ship out of the enemy's canon angle when they see the situation is going badly. If all 3 crew are getting popcorned off the boat then that's not a problem with the game mechanics. That's a skill related issue.

  • @vakrisone Please tell me how to avoid being vertically launched 3 meters trough skill, Id really like to learn that because to me thats just completely random. I wouldnt complain if I was standing near the edge and getting knocked over the railing by a cannon hit but I for sure will complain if I get knocked off the ship from below deck, you cant tell me thats an intentional mechanic

That's a bug report issue and should be looked into by Rare. I'm not saying ignore obvious bugs in the mechanics. You just don't need a wholesale popcorn reduction on the Brig in order to sort out a buggy interaction around the stairs of the ship.

  • I would have to agree that brig 'popcorning' is a noticeable issue.
I cannot count how many times Ive been knocked through the cieling near the stairs whilst belowdecks or knocked off the deck from a fairly far-away cannon hit as the helmsman.
Not only is it detrimental to gameplay but its fairly disorienting as well.

So tldr; blunders knocking you off is one thing, cannonballs pinballing you around is another.
