Hunter's Call is really bad right now, and here are some ways to fix it.

  • Copying this post over from Reddit because I think it is more likely to be seen here by relevant people.

Right now, Hunter's Call is probably by far the slowest, most boring, and least worthwhile thing you can possibly do in the game when it is a great opportunity to add some really cool PVE encounters.

    Fishing

Right now, from a purely monetary perspective, Hunter's Call is not worthwhile at all. If people actually fish in this game, they do it as some self-imposed challenge BECAUSE of how bad it is. The main way people level Hunter's Call is through selling them basically anything -but- meat and fish. They sell leftover chests, mermaid gems, you name it. Not fish, not meat.

I think the best way to fix fishing specifically is to just add an Emissary Flag, or up the value of all fish, or both. I am currently level 30 Hunter's Call. I got to that entirely via fishing and selling meat. The rarest fish I have ever caught is a Trophy Bonedust Plentifin. How much did I get? 11k, and a pathetic scrap of reputation. I could do that, or I could just do a Gold Hoarder Vault and get around 30k (or upwards of 60k with a full emissary).

With an emissary flag, fishing would still be far too RNG heavy for my tastes, but at least it would be on par with other companies that offer voyages. This would be the easiest bandaid fix for Rare to implement.

    Hunting

From what I understand, Rare really wants to avoid making Hunter's Call just another 'voyage company'. They want it to be something unique and much less formal. I still think that can be achieved even with less RNG based rewards. I see two ways of doing this. The first and easiest would essentially be allowing players to do a voyage for some sort of large bait that they could use to lure in Krakens or Megalodons (but not the shrouded ghost). They could even make whether or not a kraken or megalodon was lured in by the "big bait/chum" item utterly random. If they did this, I think it would be best if they also increased the amount of meat that was dropped. Maybe also up the difficulty of the encounters as well.

ALSO, please make killing a Kraken just cause a ton of loot or meat to float up, rather than just a little bit per-tentacle. I don't know why this hasn't been done yet.

    Advanced Hunting

If Rare really wanted to go the extra mile, beyond what I would describe as a band-aid fix, they could add new sea-monster types, or at least new moves and variations of krakens and megalodons. Allow people to chum the water with specific types of bait to lure specific types of Kraken and Megalodon (none of the current ones, I'm talking all new recolors). Maybe if a player chummed in a storm with a high level bait type, they could attract a trophy-storm-megalodon that would offer really good rewards and make the storm glow green to attract other players.

Maybe islands could have a chance to spawn higher tiers of pig/bird that actually fight back, like Boars and Cassowaries, or large Serpents instead of snakes. Again, these are just ideas for if they did a much larger update focused entirely around Hunter's Call and the hunting playstyle.

    Band-aid fixes.

Alternatively, I will settle for scraps. Honestly. Hunter's Call hasn't even gotten scraps since it was initially introduced. You don't even have to add a emissary flag. Just up the value of the fish, or -something- that could be implemented quickly and easily. Make the summon the megalodon shanty -actually- summon a megalodon once every 30 mins. Seriously, just anything. Because right now people are literally doing Athena voyages to get mermaid gems instead of actually bothering with fishing.

  • The problem with adding an emissary to Hunter's Call is that you basically create a reason for Reapers to go out of there way to target fishing ships, removing the chill nature of that activity. It's also a problem that any loot for this company is not stealable unless it's dangling on a fishing pole, in a storage crate or in unmonitored ship barrels and the last one gets completely deleted when the ship sinks.

  • Sounds like that company is just not for you, and that's ok. I don't think it needs to have an emissary so Reapers can make fishing even more difficult than it already is.

I think the first issue is essentially a non-issue, as you do not have to take up an emissary flag. People who want to chill while fishing could just not use it. Rare could also just only apply the emissary bonus to the non-chill aspects of Hunter's Call: For example, if they added targetable Krakens and Megalodons.

The second issue you bring up would also be fixed by making the emissary not apply to caught fish. Alternatively, they could essentially just put the fish in your hands as a "treasure item" as soon as you catch it but only if you are flying the emissary. I think it also goes without stating that this would work for meat that drops from Kraken/Megalodon kills too.

I feel like I need to reiterate that the emissary flags are completely optional, and only emissary fishermen would show up on the map for Reapers with these hypothetical changes. So, this would not affect players who just want to chill and fish; it would only add an option for people who are specifically interested in a style of play that is less relaxing and more focused on the exciting/adventurous aspects of Hunter's Call.

I don't think you can flip flop between treating an item as a inventory item and as a loot item. It would need to be one or the other, and I don't think people want to have a dozen fish and different kinds of meat littering the ships.

I don't disagree that it wouldn't be the most graceful solution, that being said, I think you can literally say the exact same thing for the loot items that already exist in the game, and it would only affect people who have the emissary flag.

Except it doesn't. A loot item is loot no matter what. It cannot change type when you raise/lower an emissary flag. If you want the Hunter's Call to be included in the emissary system, you need to convert all meat/fish to loot items (which means I guess they are no longer eatable?) so that they can become part of the same gameplay loop as every other emissary by providing a risk of losing it and a reward for someone else if they sink you.

I feel like we are kind of getting into the weeds of the specific way that they might go about implementing it, but really they could just make it so that if you have an emissary raised it gives you a loot-version of the fish instead of a food-version of the fish, that cannot be retroactively changed into a food item.

  • easy solution to the issue of fish not being stolen easily is just have them float up in a barrel whenever you sink some if they are in a barrel so if they arent using storage crates you can still get their fish/meats

  • I think Hunters Call needs voyages added to it to give people more of a goal if they desire.
The voyages I think should follow that of the Merchant voyages whereby they request X amount of Y fish to be delivered to Z Seapost.

I also think that the Merchant voyages of delivering pigs, snakes and chickens should be moved to Hunter's Call as it is more fitting in theme, in my opinion.
Merchant has enough loot types to sell anyway.

I also think that the Athena commendations regarding hunting the Megaladons should be moved to Hunters Call to give it more appeal to commendation hunters.
