Sail shapes, a new cosmetic category

  • Picture this:

You're on an open crew, you've set your cosmetics just the way you like and everyone agrees, apart from the one guy who insists on the advantage of Dark Adventurer sails, being the gap in the lower quarter.
The problem however, is that those sails do NOT match your Lionfish set -at all-! Worry no longer and prepare to make sail (hehehe), because in this post I will offer the solution.

    That solution being, Sail Shapes.

With Sail Shapes, you can have any Sail cosmetic you like, shaped like any sail you like! No longer will Dark Adventurer sails be the only type to have the cut below. And the other way around, if you'd like Dark Adventurer sails fully squared, that's entirely possible too!

Of course, there'd have to be a caveat, given how expensive Dark Adventurer sails are. You can't buy Sail Shapes on their own. You'll have to buy Dark Adventurer Sails to gain the benefit of using their shape on other cosmetics. However, anyone in your crew who does own them can apply their shape to your preferred cosmetics for as long as your session lasts, or a change is made at the Ship Cosmetics chest.

Now you can pick up a crew, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer your weasely black guts out without spending overly long arguing over the sails!

  • Dark adventure sails are for noobs that can not manage to sail with flat not torn sails. The same noobs that would otherwise curl the bottom of their sails.
If you need a V cut, or it matters so much, then your not a good helmsman.
If someone on my crew was insisting so badly on having these sails on, I would leave and find a new crew, knowing that this one person would be the weakest link.

Exactly this. The trim on DA sails offers an advantage, but it's pretty close to negligible.

Anyone relying on the DA sails for its minor advantage is a Lazybeard who is lacking in awareness and crew communication skills, just like those who prefer to lose speed by rolling up their sails to see, when all you have to do is either A] get off the wheel for 2 seconds, and look yourself, or B] ask a crewmate who can see for you.

In any case, many of the sails have a specific trim to meet its cultural style. Without it, it just doesn't make sense and would be an affront to said culture.

blah blah blah "nerf DA sails"

Having sail cuts available for all sails would require new textures for all cuts on all sails. A lot of work just so a few can feel safe in their DA security blanket.

If you want a sail cut, equip that sail and color the ship accordingly.

Personally, I ask someone I haven't sailed with before, "What's your favorite color?" and go from there.

@pabio-escobar and @galactic-geek said everything else I want to say perfectly :)

Not what I said at all. I don't own DA sails, don't need them at this point, doing fine without them. I just looked at the Athena's Fortune emissary ledger reward sails and saw the repainted Ghost set sails with the huge cut down the middle and thought "I do not want my nice sails all torn up like that." Just brought up the DA sails as the most well-known example of how sail cuts can impact gameplay.

Nevertheless that still doesn't deny the fact that it is advantageous.
More customization options are always positive in my opinion.
    Happy sailing!

Not at the expense of insulting one's culture by removing its style of trim and replacing it with another, though - Rare already set a precedent regarding this very thing with the Eastern Winds Jade set.

  • @grumpyw01f The post you tagged has a lot of arguable points & "features" that you didn't mention that the sail has, as if you want the sail to be useless.
Nevertheless the fact still stands that they are indeed advantageous.
    Happy sailing!

    Such as?

If you're referring to PvE/QoL, in that post I was merely trying to get PvP advantages out of the argument. You can read more of the thread for PvE/QoL discussion.

I even missed a criteria in that post: The sails need to be fully lowered (in many naval scenarios, you have your sails partially raised). Lemme add that.

  • @galactic-geek I'm not sure what you mean, but it would be cool to see customizable sails in some form. Maybe a new Sailmaker shop where you could "build" your own sail with variety of unique shapes & decals? Then they could leave all the existing sails alone.. :)
    Happy sailing!

It's a design choice out of respect for certain cultures - Rare chose certain sail's cuts, not just because it looks nice, or gives a particular advantage - they did it because it showcases that particular culture's aesthetics. Mind you this doesn't apply to all sails, but the moment you take a culture's aesthetics, and try to turn it into something else, pirated from said culture might have a thing or 2 to say about that. It happened with the Eastern Winds Jade facial hair (which is no longer available as a result), and it can happen here too. The last thing we need is even more incomplete cosmetic sets.

As for giving complete design control to the pirate's themselves? That will never happen, as it defeats the purpose of earning all prior-released cosmetics, ignores any potential profit Rare could make from them to continue supporting their community, and opens the door for potentially vulgar designs in a Sea where children often set sail - it's bad enough they probaly already see immature humor on the map table... 🤦‍♂️🙄

Not necessarily, if the customization is done right, or if we're only allowed to add specific decals & logos to specific locations on the sail. Plus the color & sail cut, which they could sell from the Sailmaker with gold/doubloons. (a new gold sink)
Nothing incredibly fancy. It doesn't have to be a full in depth customization.

but yeah, I get what you mean...

    Cheers! Happy sailing!
