Roleplay Option - Name Your Pirate

  • I really was looking into this year's upcoming content roadmap, and I could not, for the life of me, discern what roleplay options could entail later in the year. Though while thinking on it, there was something that had come up in my mind. There was ideas on these forums (and even the art book!) for naming your ship and what have you, but I feel like naming your own pirate has been overlooked. (Not entirely, it has come up once or twice!)

Yes, I'm aware that your name is pretty firmly connected to your Xbox Live name online, and there's a bit more to it than just "allowing people to type their own names" but there is a current feature in the game which randomly generates a pirate name for you, if I recall correctly, which has a set of "presets" it files through to name you.

I think that if you really want to roleplay your Pirate, why not be able to name them? I'm not thinking very specifically a "type your name here" kind of situation, because you'd basically just get the same effect as Xbox Live names, and you'd have to find some form of censor system to make sure people aren't abusing the ability to do so. But, what if there was something, as seen in a lot of kid-friendly MMO's, like ToonTown, Amazing World, etc. where there's a set of three boxes, which have preset adjectives and names built into them. With the option, of course, to leave a blank, and it just doesn't put that part of the name in.

First box could be something like a title, like, "Captain" or "Swabby" or "Magus" or "Hoarder" or...... you get the drill.
Second box could be something like an adjective or nickname, like, "Snaggletooth" or "Jibberin'" or "Hearty" or "Spooky" or .... you know.
Third box would be reserved for your Pirate's name. "Jane, Jack, Harold, Jimothy, Patrick, Devon, Kate" etc.

This is obviously an imperfect system, and could probably be iterated on, but I think it would be cool to run into other players in the heat of battle, locked with swords against "Powdermonkey Gerald" or "Captain 'Crazy Eyes' Dave" or something to that effect, versus .... "HaloCoolGuy43" or "JumbleOfGiraffes777" Hahaha.

It would add something to the game, I think. And even though it'd be optional, and you'd still come across Xbox tags, I think it would really add to the memory of some of your finest experiences on the sea, and open up more roleplay opportunities to get into your character or meet others.

  • Some of us changed our Xbox gamertags to show off our pirate names.... just saying. A little bit of alliteration never hurts.

Not gonna change my Xbox name for the sake of one game when I play others ;) (Great name, btw!)

(Especially when it is unique, and still has the original 16 characters vs. the new 12.)

  • @thelostsentinel commit your life to SoT and you'll never look back! ;p

  • People who meet me just call me, Capt.Bacon or if I’m not, Burn. :)

Just gotta learn to use what you got

  • I think it would help with immersion on both ends, naming your own pirate and the ability to use some form of name packs for enemies if someone wants.

People's account names can be pretty distracting at times for some people.

Streamer names doesn't bring much variety to the table and no names at all can be fun but can interfere with performance by making things more difficult.

I think people able to tinker with names and colors and maybe even fonts to some degree would bring qol to the experience.

  • @hijack-hayes People have more games then Sea of Thieves on their Xbox profiles, and people shouldn't have to change their xbox profile names for ONE game in the lot.

Other games already use unique player names for those who play their games. Sea of Thieves could do the same.

A system could be implemented to allow for players to select their name specifically for Sea of Thieves. It could still be internally tied to their Xbox profile, and have a Unique name retirement (with numbers added on end if it isn't unique)

It would still be tied to a player's account. It would just be a name chosen for Sea of Thieves (and more easily able to fit the theme of the game) rather then the one used for a Microsoft Xbox account which could include MANY other games.

  • @hijack-hayes I'm with you matey.

If I'm not mistaken, a similar system already exists for naming skeleton Captains. Though not a complex system, it does pull from a huge list of names that have been entered in by Rare's team and include some of their names, including "Three Sheets Neate". It could be something they could use to add to that list of names, where it has a chance of hitting the existing list, or pulling from a random assemblage of pirate name pieces.

Either or - I think it'd be very fun just to see some other pirates at sea that are named. It would give you all the more reason to pursue titles that fit with your Pirate's name.

Hahah I did exactly that for this game lol

  • You can already roleplay with names; you just can't choose which name you get. Just turn them on using the Replace Gamertags setting under the HUD submenu, and try to spend a session roleplaying your pirate based upon the names given to you and your crew. It's actually quite fun, and ensures a different experience each time! Especially with new pirates, or role reversals where a crewmate got a name you have previously used.

  • But, I'm already Fishy Joe, and I bring the Salt.....

As noted in my post, I have already mentioned this. I think it's nice, but would you not want to name the pirate that you designed, yourself? I know I would. It's my pirate. Let me name them.

Because in giving my pirate a name, he is no longer mine - I view my pirate as an extension of me; not some other character. I live vicariously through my pirate's experiences and adventures while visiting the Sea. I don't just view them as a spectator in the 3rd-person. What happens to him happens to me.

I am 1 with my pirate and my pirate is 1 with me.
I am 1 with my pirate and my pirate is 1 with me.

Then you don't have to. You do not have to change your name, you can just leave it the same. I'm sure there are others who would like to name their own pirate for others to see the name of.

I do not see good reason to "oppose" a minor feature that's entirely optional (unless you were just giving your opinion, and not necessarily opposing it), and just an improvement on an already existing feature. The game wouldn't force anyone to change their name. This is purely for those who want to. Otherwise I wouldn't be making the suggestion. It's all for the fun of it!

So go ahead and do what myself and many other people did for Sea of Thieves, Change your Gamertag. Easy fix.

I've already stated prior in the thread why not. I play other games where I want to keep my name the same. A lot of modern games these days allow you to change display names without changing your actual login name. Sea of Thieves should not be any different. I am suggesting less than that - purely a 'name a pirate' system for fun roleplay reasons.

  • @thelostsentinel but then wouldn't that rob the people that have actually changed their gamer tags from using their gamer tags? If it's a premade selection of different components that you put together at least, it would. Or would you have it that you can just either use the system or keep your gamertag visible?

  • Problem with that is that those names won't be unique and you won't be able to file a complaint about a certain player if you can't identify them by a unique name.

  • @thelostsentinel You can still get the 16 characters if you change it on a Xbox 360 btw
