I think it would be super cool if a bunch of portals opened up in a few servers which lead to a new server where you can fight for some kind of phantom treasure etc.
Like a last man standing or arena match or some other kind of game, first boat that enters the portal in their respective server gets to go to this proving ground of sorts.

An idea I had for a world event is a real time challenge thing across all players.
Every day (in-game) a new challenge would appear. It will run for the result of the in-game day and award the top %s of players with money and cosmetics.
Stuff like:
Kill Skeletons
Dig up chests
Sink ghost or skeleton ships
Kill Players
Sell Athena Loot
Then at the end,
top 50% get 10,000 gold
top 25% get 100 doubloons as well
top 10% get 10 ancient coins
top 5% get a new title
top 1% get a new cosmetic
