The problem with the fov, please Rare, you have to make up your own mind

  • @kommodoreyenser

Agreed. When I watch some films I have to put up with a black band at the top and bottom of my TV screen. If you want to experience SoT as intended you need to put up with the same left and right (assuming you have the option to do so) until there comes a point when/if these resolutions become the norm (if you have to use ultrawides).

  • @kommodoreyenser I play on a 27' 1440p 165hz monitor. 90 is terrible. You literally just said ''oh, I play on pc and it's fine for me lol'' also, nice remark about COD. So according to you higher fov=comp shooters?

100%, higher than 90 FOV on 16:9 is super sweat. Look at that video I posted further up on the thread. Tell me how good that looks.

What I literally said was a sarcastic tone of what you assumed about everyone who is opposed to a higher FOV in this game.

One question would clear up real quick the underlying motivation of your desire for a higher FOV. If they did a gradient blur from the 90-120 FOV difference, would you still run it because you felt it looked better even though the peripheral vision gained would be mostly useless for spotting and attacking an enemy player?

Console players in here telling PC players 90 is enough. As they play on their xbox on a 70” TV sitting 25 feet away on a couch.

Sit with the proper distance from your monitor based on its size and you won't have issues. I keep telling people, if you can't see the full bezel at all times while looking dead center, you're too close to your monitor or it is too big for your set up.

90 FoV should be plenty to avoid motion sickness. I suffer from motion sickness and I do not have issues.

Here's looking at you Dead Rising 3.

I have an extra wide monitor. I get a wider field of view because of that. FOV seems to affect the HEIGHT of your viewport - and WIDTH adapts to the screen based on that.

Are you sure that this is not what is going on?

This guy left it visible in his screen capture but yes we are sure. FOV 130 and "by exceptis" in green on the corners of screen are dead giveaway. Also notice the terrible fisheye effect near the borders of the screen. Players are using 3rd party software now, from a free cheat community (not gonna advertise but a hint for the Devs it's easy to find)

This player is very clearly using a modded FoV. His hud is not in the corner where it is meant to be, his guns look weird, and the feeling feels off. He's modded.

  • Word to the young, impressionable, and unknowing; modding your FoV is CHEATING and also against ToS for Microsoft, Xbox, and Rare. You will lose your account.

  • FOV 100 +

    • First of all, Sea of Thieves is not designed as a competitive shooter and meant more to be a casual coop adventure game.

that's not the point. the point is that 90 fov is visually unappealing, and causes motion sickness. it has nothing to do with sea of thieves being "competitive" or not.

The first part is just your opinion, the second is that it would very person to person. I suffer from motion sickness/simulation sickness and SoT does not bother me when I set FoV to 90 so no, it is not a definitive thing.

I would argue they are somewhat right in that casual experiences won't be concerned with giving players an edge which is why MOST players want it. Also, the second reason listed with the GPU resources is the primeier reason they are hard capped to 90 FoV. It's what the games performance budget is balanced around.

  • There are so many things to say on this topic most of them have already been in the tread. I would like to add one more point to it though, SoT has a lot of close combat, and having such a narrow fov doesn't really help when navigating small spaces with people jumping and dashing around you. Personally, I think that a slightly higher fov would be a benefit to all players. Especially when thinking about sword combat since you can only fight close to one another, it would be helpful to see more since it would let you track players better.

  • You guys shifted this conversation a bit.

OP wasn't about what FoV is good or bad, or subjectively acceptable. It was about tryhard sweatlords using 3rd party software to modify it, despite it being against the ToS, and gain a slight upper hand by being able to have a wider view in close range combat.

  • @l0lnull (1) It is a well known trick in the competitive fps scene to change to a higher FoV to be able to see more on a screen as to spot enemies sooner. (2) Some titles also change the size of the weapon when increasing FoV (again, allowing to see more stuff on screen).

I can to a certain degree see why a FoV of 90 could cause a bit of motion sickness but calling it unappealing is a far stretch.

  • Ahoy!

SoT's design was for 90 FoV. We removed the ability to up it any further as tamperng with game files goes against Microsoft's ToS and it undermines the game design. There are no plans to reverse this decision.

    Dropping anchor here.
