Suggestion: Harpoon "quick release"...."quick zip".....name still in the works

  • I do a lot of solo slooping and have an idea:

What about the ability to retract the harpoon from the spear side and be carried with it? IE your boat is parked by the beach, and harpoon has been shot into the sand on the shore or rock face, tower, whatever. You walk up to the spear, initiate the reel in and be "zipped" back to your boat?

This could also be used to counter attack ships that harpoon you in a chase (as long as the spear is in reach)..... just another thought :)

    Happy sailing all!

  • So, you're asking if, from the harpoon end, you can be reeled back to the ship?

    No.

An example as to why it would be a bad idea is this: picture 2 ships in a pitched battle - 1 harpoons the other to jockey for a better cannon position. However, in doing so, an opposing pirate on the other ship uses the line to pull himself back to the harpoon's origin for a free boarding.

    No.

  • I actually like it. I think it could add some risk if you are the harpooning boat to make it more important to aim at a certain spot at the other boat. And from island over idea as well. I would want it to only be useable if your hands are empty. That way the idea in my head is pulling it out with both hands and then the harpoon retracts its self.

  • There should be a hold timer. Like a little longer than to pick something up so people aren't constantly using it.

I like the implications of someone not friendly using it for a quick board. Although we're likely to see more "nErF t3h BlUnDiE" posts too lol.

  • I mean, if you slash the line it retracts since harpoons have been a thing. At this point it would merely need a prompt for grabbing the line before slashing.

I disagree that this is a bad thing. To echo what @captain-coel said, I think that this suggestion opens up opportunities for further strategy and counter-play.

The victim of a harpoon can already dislodge it by slashing it (provided that it's within reach), but this change would present them with a choice: do they slash it and stay on their ship, or grab it and board the enemy vessel? Both choices have pros and cons, and they both require the harpoon being within reach of the victim (which means the harpooner can avoid any of this by aiming their harpoon someplace where no one can reach it).

Additionally, if @pithyrumble's suggestion of making the interact require 1-2 seconds before "activating" is applied, a harpooner who sees the enemy pirate run up and begin interacting with the embedded harpoon would have enough time to let go of the launcher and pull their weapon out before the boarder arrived. A dead boarder is out of commission for 40 seconds or so.

This would be a new tool to work with, and players would adapt their playstyle accordingly.

  • This could be a very interesting mechanic - I think I am pretty much for this as an option. My reasons echo those from others above.

  • @kommodoreyenser i feel like it used to retract when shot too. It definitely doesn’t anymore

If my memory is correct it stopped doing that after they "fixed" the capstan lowering when hit with cannons. Might of been related.

Doesn't that only work if you hit the harpoon gun?

I swear I've tried slashing the line before and it would not retract.

You're right, just confirmed. Wonder why I remembered it that way...

    Eh, okay.

I mean, I think it should.

If you literally cut a rope, it wouldn't stay.

Oh I agree, but it seems the rope isn't physically there. It doesn't block player movement and actually CAN'T be interacted with in any way, you can even walk through it if you harpoon high enough on something and then cross it's path.
