Whaling and Great White Whale Tale

  • We need Whaling in Sea of Thieves. By Rowboat and Harpoons, Harpoon Rowboat, or by ship. Players would have the chance to take down giant whales and get their items. That would be so fun to pack the ship full of harpoons and set out for whale oil. Another commodity in the game, Whale Oil. This could be the new fuel for lanterns in the game. Casks of Whale Oil can be sold to the Merchant. Whale Blubber or (whale meat) could be sold to Merrick at the Seaposts. I can see some people having an issue with putting fuel into the lantern just to make it function, but then there are most of us who would find it very exciting to have to pay attention to the fuel in our lanterns. Casks of Whale Oil in our holds to bring back for gold. Whale Bone items at the Pirate Emporium. Whaling Ship Set. Captain Ahab Costume. Whale bone peg leg, etc. The Whole Nine Yards.
Also... The Great White Whale Tale
I think this would be a great tale to the Masterful Sea of Thieves. Giant White Whale rolling right up to the ship. Ramming the ship and possibly jumping out of the sea, trying to capsize the ship, creating massive damage.

  • This is something that I wished could come to Sea of Thieves, but the only issue is that animal rights activists will have there hair in a rats nest. They were already unhappy that we had the ability to kill sharks, killing whales would be a heated debate with possible law suits if it goes that far. I believe npc whales and other fauna would be good while have a big white whale (I can see why you called it that) boss fight attached to that update. Maybe make these “kill whales” into another boss like megs. I have made a Hunters Call concept update we’re this could be a prelude to it. Ship set would be cool, harrpons would be cool as well as a single use weapon, and that peg leg already exists with the bone crusher one.

The general theme of the game (excluding pigs, which can be turned into pets and have invasive boars replace them on islands)
is predator vs predator, killer vs killer. It's a generally consistent vibe that would be interrupted by adding whales as creatures to kill. Whales aren't typically hostile towards people. It's a one sided slaughter which isn't often what SOT offers. 2 predators clashing for the hunting ground is easier for people to digest in a fantastical adventure game for the family.

Outside of the drama it's not a compatible vibe fit imo. SOT isn't a gritty experience when it comes to hunting and I think whale killing would be unpleasant and inconsistent addition.

People's morality and social views on the topic is theirs to have, personally I just don't see it as a pleasant thing to witness in a game designed like this one.

  • Didn't Chapman say no whales?

    Yes?

He's the one along with Joe that sign off on this stuff.

I would be pretty shocked if whales showed up one day since he said No.

When the creative director says No, that is pretty much the end of it.

I suppose the team could always try to convince him but yah I'm not seeing it. He wanted different things other than whales.

I know Chapman's stance on the subject - I just don't know if he ever publicly voiced it, hence the yes, with a question mark.

I think he said it on Twitter and in one of the podcasts. I know I've heard him say it. Also maybe some of the interviews back in the day.
