What if the game came out as a PvE Coop Open World pirate game?

  • I personally love Sea of Thieves because of the interaction between players, without PvP and RPing random stuff with other crews I wouldn't play this game, but what if it was designed as a PvE only coop game? I think I'd love to play that too! It would hopefully have less hitreg issues and more complex, interactive and interesting enemy design as a PvE only game.

What do you guys think? would you like a pirate game like that too? or are you here for PvP ONLY?

  • Im here for the PvPvE game. I love the fact that i can loose everything in a second, and the fact that i can just as well find a new friendly crew to do stuff with.

  • I liked Black flag and still play it for the songs.

That is my pve pirate game.

Black Flag, love that game. BUT i also sometimes start up the old Akella games, Sea Dogs, Age of Sail/Age of Pirates (series).

  • I started and stayed on SoT just for PvE.

Sailing, Fishing, Doing Forts is what makes me Happy even playing alone, is really immersive.

Obviously if they launched the Game as Pve Coop..... Sot Will be full of players and servers Alive with ships doing stuff and helping each others.

I like SoT, but Im 100% sure than pure Pve Will make It a better Game and way less toxic than the actual one.

PvP is ok as concept, but is horrible due to lag/backtracking/hitreg/trash servers/coinflip gunfights.

If servers were decent, 100% agree to Pvpve, with Azure potatos.... 100% agree with pure PvE.

  • I would have moved on long ago if I had even started it in the first place. PvE doesn't have any longevity.

  • It won't happen tbh.

The only way I would ever think PvP gets removed is if they decide they can't support the game anymore, and they maybe atleast build it, and make it playable as an offline solo experience..

Which I sort of hope happens whenever the time comes, as it'd be a shame to lose the game forever one day because they moved on years ago up to that point and don't want to pay for servers and maintenance anymore.

  • Pvp is what kept the game interesting when it didnt have a whole lot to do.

  • If SoT had come out as purely PvE game and had been exactly the same it is now, I most likely would never have picked this up. I was sold to this game after watching Zylbrad's goofy adventures on the four "seas" because the player interactions made it look so fun.

I don't think SoT would be special nor as enjoyable as it is right now if it was purely PvE game because the PvE game play loop in SoT isn't anything special, go on a voyage, do task(s), get loot, deliver it to op, get gold that you can spend on cosmetics. Quite dull if the only thinks you could do were mindless grinding which becomes boring after hundred vaults, trust me, I've done it, or "getting better" by becoming more efficient chest tracker.
SoT was build to embrace player interactions and that's pretty much what all the treasure is here for, and why only real way to get better is by learning instead of upgrading ships, only thing making encounters with others, was it friendly or hostile one is ones goals and "skill level", and deceptive plots they twine for you.

TL:DR, would be boring and no where as successful as SoT was made with player interactions in mind, were they hostile or friendly, and for SoT to work as purely PvE or PvP game there would have to be plenty of different game play choices to the point SoT wouldn't resemble the game it is and has been.

  • @ghostfire1981 Sid Meier's Pirates Remastered is still one of the best pirates' games.

Dont know if its nostalgia, but i prefer the old clunky PC version. Although i did play it first time on my Amiga 500, but the PC version was the one that i played more in the end.

EDIT: ... and now i feel old. :/

  • @ghostfire1981 We are all one year older today! :)

That was a good game and the shanties were enjoyable. Still can't get over the parkour parts of AC, those segments ruined the mood at times.

  • They are just going to lock this thread as they do not want to even talk about PvE. They do not even want us to talk about it period.

Black Flag was a very good pirate game, too bad you had to play Assassins Creed as well.

  • @wdw1011971 Honestly I can see the reason why. The devs have given their answer on this topic and bringing it up again and again hoping to change their minds is futile. RARE had a vision when SOT was developed and I respect them for staying true to that vision.

  • It's the PVEpVP formula that creates a unique experience everytime you log in.

Take the PVP out and it's Club Penguin on pirate ships.

Might as well rename it "Jake and the Neverland Pirates".

That doesn't have to be a bad thing. =P

Then again, I've been wishing for an open world Batman game that takes place in the Adam West universe ever since Arkham City, so maybe I just have different priorities.

  • The PvP is getting a bit out of balance in adventure mode. Creating purely PvE servers would kill the game, but adventure mode is currently Arena. My experience over the past couple months has been 95% of every ship I encounter just chases me relentlessly, whether I have loot or not. I always grab the shroudbreaker to escape (I'm a solo slooper) and I've had ships just sailing around the edge of the shroud for long periods of time just waiting for me to come out. Myself, I would have to be pretty bored to waste that much time doing nothing. It used to be a good balance of getting servers where at least a couple other ships were also doing some PvE stuff and would leave you alone, but now ever server has become a battle royale.

You just had a string of bad luck. There have been plenty of times where people sail right by me and pay me no mind.

  • The short answer, it wouldn't be Sea of Thieves. There would need to be a lot of different design decisions made which would result in something that is very different. Sure, it could take place in the same universe, have the same art style, but it wouldn't be the same at all.

And this might be something that Rare explores some day, not with this game but with another game entirely.

  • I'd actually play again, combats so lackluster and boring, feels like pvp was an afterthought they half-tailed and tossed in to have something to do at launch

  • You wouldn't have made this thread...

  • In principle, I would like an offline game with a storyline and bots in a team. I already have nothing to do in the game except to collect emissary skins. PVP in this game is disgusting, opponents jump like macaques, primitive melee combat.

  • Hi all, Given the debate surrounding PvE vs PvP has been going for some time, the team wanted to address it, laying out our vision and the design intent of the game. Sea of Thieves at its heart has and always will be a shared-world adventure game, and this is something that is not planned to change in the future. In Episode 2 of the Sea of Thieves Official Podcast, a nuanced discussion surrounding the community debate took place with a number of the senior team involved in the creation of the game. You can find the episode here which will play from the start of the relevant conversation regarding the debate.

With our position on this topic now clear, the discussion surrounding PvPvE is no longer relevant to the Steam Discussions. Having closely followed the discussions that have taken place surrounding this topic, we feel that it no longer has a place within this forum as it has, at times, led to unwarranted hostility between members of the community. To prevent this, we will be locking all past threads discussing this and will keep a close eye out for any emerging threads that revive the subject.
