Why Are My Pigs Dying?

  • Why the heck are my pigs just dying of their own accord? They're not being shot at or anything and our ship hasn't even taken any damage. Do I need to feed them or something?

EDIT: For anyone else who was wondering the same thing, yes you do need to feed them (unlike snakes and chickens).

  • Yes, unlike chickens and snakes, you need to feed pigs. If you see them sitting down or they are crying, give them a banana (doesn't have to be a banana, but I don't suggest wasting your good food on them).

Considering chickens and snakes don't need food it's kinda dumb that pigs do. :/

    Thanks though!

  • @hotklou9848 think of it like a Tier/Scale system. Chickens are easy and don't hurt you or need maintenance, Pigs need maintenance via Feeding, and Snakes can potentially harm you.

Yeah I suppose it makes sense. It should be made more obvious to beginners though, as we've lost many a brave pig to starvation.

  • @hotklou9848 yea, that is one of those toss up things. One of the big things with this game is player experimentation and finding things out on your own or through communicating with other Pirates/the community. So it is a fine balance between how much/what the tutorial phase spoon feeds you and how much/what you need to just kind of come on to through your own experience and interactions. Just a part of how the game is designed, really.

But now you know, so go forth and prosper!

It used to be that the special thing about the chickens was how annoying they were. I had to plead with many a crewmate to not kill one!

  • Just bury them alive until you are ready to head out. Dig them up, feed them, and off you pop to the Outpost.

I'm slightly bothered that this actually works.

A pirate has to do, what a pirate has to do.

Still though, since chickens and snakes don't need food you'd expect the pigs to also not need food, leaving you totally confused and perhaps even frustrated when it dies for seemingly no reason.

Feed them pork chops while you're at it 😈

    Chickens Easy
    Snakes Medium
    Pigs Hard

It might be the other way around where snakes are the hardest and pigs are medium. Point is by having to feed them as a sort of upkeep, it adds a balancing mechanic. It used to be much worse. They would get hungry all the time.

Oh I'm not suggesting they change it, I'm just saying that since it can be confusing to figure it out initially they could maybe give you some sort of tutorial notification when you first cage a pig, or pick up a caged pig, to let you know that, unlike the other animals, you actually need to feed your pigs.

  • @hotklou9848 It's true, they could, but there's no mystery to solve in that now is there? 😏

    Welcome to Sea of Thieves.

And guess what, you're going to have a lot of other situations identical to that. And you're going to come here and score the same things, and you're going to get the same answers.
This game is about experimentation, exploration and discovery. He's not going to give you the answers to everything, you're going to have to find them out. And there will not always be a single answer to what you ask, each pirate has had his experience and come to a conclusion. And you can still come up with one different from all the others. That's the sandbox.
Play the game and find out your answers.
