I've talked with multiple people on separate occasions and they all agree, Grogmanay this year isn't good. Theres a few points like people who got over alcoholism, minors being forced to drink for a challenge/minors being introduced to alcohol. Then theres also feeling nauseous while doing the challenges. Grogmanay was a good idea with poor execution- it also doesnt help that its bugged.
"You arent forced to do the event" yet the cosmetics and the title will be unavailable after the event is over with, basically forcing you to do the challenges if you want the reward, in this case, a 1st or 2nd scratch on the annual tankard.
I know completionists who havent drank in game because it makes them sick irl, they cant do these challenges because of that.
I'm not saying give everyone completion of the event, but seriously rethink your approach on Grogmanay from now on.
Grogmanay...

Edit: to clarify - the challenges are crew-based; you can have a sober crew member who shoots the shark first, looks for where the treasure is, guide skellies &c and they will get the items for this event as well.

As you said. You don’t have to do it. If you feel it is bad. Don’t do it or worry about “titles” because that would just subject you to. You drank a lot in “a video game” to earn it.
Nobody is forced. You don’t have to do it again. It’s a title and rewards. If you feel strongly against social standing about drinking “in a video game” don’t do it.
It means nothing to the strong, willed, casual, and those of us who know better. Not to have video games influence them.
It’s pirates. They drank and did horrible stuff worse than drinking. (Yet the game doesn’t do the other stuff).
Let not forget. The game doesn’t encourage but it allows players to commit suicide to achieve goals. So…."Ah s*** here we go again"
No, it does not encourage alcohol in any way possible.
Its a plauful event completing activities with the challenge of being drunk. But it does not "gLoRiFy" alcoholism, its a silly little event.
Cant wait for this dumb trend to go away, martyrs seeking for fabricated problems, the main culprit is our luxurious life. Our life is so damn good that we are nitpicking nonsense.BUT, I absolutely hated this event because it was a chore to do and buggy mess with killing skellies.
I like most of the events, seriously. I do not like this one. I find it very frustrating, aggravating, and nauseating.
I think 3 grogs was too many.
One grog and wait for the drunk affect, should have been enough, IMO. Trying to stumble to the objective and fight the control the whole way drunken master style is not my idea of a good time. I ended up having to use cannons to shortcut my way there.
While I don't think this event glorifies drinking, I just find it overly difficult and annoying to complete.

This is basically how I felt about the event.
I actually quite liked the event and found the rewards, for once, (especially since bilge rat related) quite good.
I'm guessing there could be an option to lower the visual effects to prevent actually being sick afterwards.
Overall I've found it challenging and interesting to complete, aswell as encouraging what we sadly rarely do nowadays in this game : getting drunk...I 100% agree as well. This event is tedious and barely doable solo. Why solo? Because of my mates don't want to bother spending time with this event so... While I managed, painfully, to complete the easiest 4, I've had big trouble completing the 3 shots towards an enemy ship and kill 1 shark. To the point I stopped trying.
Hitting 3 times because NO PLAYERS I've encountered want to do this challenge: I tried with the flag, the speaker and even text to argue but they don't care (even when I've got no loot), so basically they all just play pirates and this challenge is wrong for them. Killing 1 shark because the sharks despawn while you drink the 3 grogs (plus again the sobering up in water issue). How can I seriously get the title if I can't accomplish these challenges?FYI enemyships include skloops.
None of your mates wants to sail with you, shoot a shark two times while you drink 3 grogs and kill it with the 3rd hit ?
BTW this can be done while you do other things (sharks never turn up when you need them, so just wait until you curse a shark for turning up).

How can I seriously get the title if I can't accomplish these challenges? To get the one for shooting a shark it helps to go to a sinking shipwreck. There is a grog barrel/keg which you can drink from, and just staying in the water for long enough is bound to spawn some sharks eventually. Just wait for sharks to show up, get drunk and shoot them with a shotgun or something when they charge. It helps to weaken them with a shot or two beforehand so it's easier to kill them while drunk. Hope it helps.
@syphiss7149 - Also, me and my friends all did it with NPC ships, especially the smaller ones. We just set our ship on a slow spin (or let it drift) and kept drinking until they're close enough to make the shot. It's dumb how the players don't want to band together to complete these challenges though. What use is the event flag then, if it can't even do its job to signal that you want to do the event?
@faceyourdemon when the only "novel" thing about the event is that you are drunk while doing so, that speaks to what they thought would make the event fun and exciting.
So kill skeletons, fire cannonballs, kill sharks, kill ocean crawlers, catch animals, dig chests sober = boring
Kill skeletons, fire cannonballs, kill sharks, kill ocean crawlers, catch animals, dig chests while drunk = sign me up that's a great idea for an event!
Obviously the intent isn't to glorify alcohol consumption, or push it on minors or anything like that, but it just wasn't a very well thought out event for many reasons, some of which you mention.
But it can't be denied that Rare banked on the "drunk is fun" to do a lot of the heavy lifting to make this event feel unique. Does it rise to the level of glorifying it? Maybe not, at least not for me. But I don't think the concern is unfounded either.
I mean, they didn't even incorporate using fireworks into the actual challenge of the event and those are the new and exciting thing. That was the obvious choice, but somehow "drunk is fun" won out.
So it begs the question, why is drunkenness so fun / funny to them that it needed to be the star of the event? I also think it was meant to a silly event, the grog drinking is already very silly by itself, but did drinking really need it's own event? Just seemed out of place given everything else Sea of Thieves has to offer, new and old. This event missed the mark all around.

If one of my mates came to me asking for help, even though I've done it and even though I hate it; I'll still try to help them.

Ok but i dont see how is that gloryfing alcohol...

Its not the first Gragmany, they did it last year but without the grog and now they found sense in giving it a clear goal.
In exeution I asbolutely hate this event, it was a chore to do but it has nothing with "gloryfing alcohol"I think that some people are overthinking it, one post was the most dumbest about "if people attack your complain instead of what being said, youre doing it right" bruh...... So if i disagee with him its because he is right? How convenient ego inflated dumb conclusion is that!?
Were all fighting for the same things but demonizing an innocent event for self importance wont be received well in my book.

Sharks frequent shipwrecks. I got 2 within 5 minutes of sailing to a Reaper's Chest - just shot them from the deck with a trident found in the wreck.

I thought you were talking about getting grog from the wreck 😁. But you're right, wrecks are a good source for sharks, the sirens can be a pain though.

I had actually forgotten that a pirate could do that... 😅
