GO BACK TO MONTHLY UPDATES

  • Please stop doing seasons and go back to monthly updates like 2020. Your not giving enough content for how long seasons actually are. Literally everyone i knows says 2020 had more content than 2021 did and the pandemic was at it’s peak too and it was still better than seasons. Every season it is having fun for the first 3 weeks then getting bored and waiting for next update. I had so much more fun in 2020 compared to now and i think its killing the game

Stop seasons and go back to monthly updates please

    Sincerely- apesot

  • Most of my crew is already fully done with all the commendations of this season... and last season did not take that long either (except the breath of the sea). So yeah we need more stuff to do game is getting stale too fast.

Bring back Bilge Rat events and more lively events with custom missions to keep the game fresh!

  • there is more to do now under the season system than there was on the monthly updates

there are constant live events now bringing all sorts of things to earn throughout the season on top of the season stuff

monthly updates were more frequent but a lot of the time just included another grindy set of commendations without a lot of appeal to casual play

Seasons also give people grind time and chill time

monthly updates were constant carrot chasing without that do whatever time which I enjoy after a grind and I'm sure plenty of others that play a lot enjoy as well

the updates are also completely free so I think requesting more and more often of the free stuff is a request that seems off-putting to me

  • The events that they run during the season are supposed to keep us satiated. Unfortunately, the events have just been short spurts of recycled content and easy tasks. They're designed for casuals. There hasn't been anything for the "hardcore" among us in quite a while. Bilge Rat voyages need to make a comeback. Run them for the entirety of the season. Make them challenging. Make them competitive. Make the rewards simple but sweaty akin to the Wandering Reaper and Inevitable Reaper stuff.

  • @sweetsandman
Yeah bilge rat voyages would be a good way yo balance more content

  • Need to correct a slight bit of misinformation though.

While the pandemic may have "been at its peak" in 2021, the ramifications and consequences would not be immediately apparent. We are just now starting to feel what happens when everything shuts down worldwide these past few months to this year.

Also, the pandemic is NOT over. The team is still working from home and they are about to go on holiday as they do around this time of year.

    Now that is out of the way;

    I agree with @wolfmanbush

I feel that seasons are just fine as they are. If players would quit blowing through the content on Day 1, they would have something to do consistently through the Seasons. The seasons are designed for CASUAL play. You are not supposed to zerg through the content.

I personally feel that seasons are exactly where they need to be in terms of content and flow.

They bring in new things every so often.

Every new seasons there are new commendations, ledger rewards, and events to look forward to, including the main content. Honestly did not like Bilge Rat Events. They were too frequent and it was too stressful constantly chasing rewards. I ran myself ragged but I do have things people will never get again.

  • The Seasonal update allows Rare to refine features better before releasing them. During 2019 and 2020, there was a lot of feedback asking Rare to slow down updates because they were coming out full of bugs and glitches, and they lacked depth (pun intended). While things are not perfect now, at least Rare have more time to work on fixes over a season.

2020 may have seemed like it had more content (debatable), but they were much smaller in scope. Only really Legends of the Sea (an easter egg hunt), Heart of Fire (one shortish Tall Tale), chest of rage, chainshots, Athena Runs, Emissaries, ghost fleets, Ashen Winds, and GH Vaults are noteworthy.

This year, we've had Lost Shipments, Fort of Fortune, trade routes, A Pirate's Life (5 Tall Tales), 3 new AI enemy types (ocean crawlers having 3 very different variants), tridents, 6 sunken shrines and 3 sunken treasuries, fireworks, cannon rowboat, sitting, burying treasure, rats on ships, fast storage... plus way more frequent events, season items, and a whole load more cosmetics added to shops.

Seems about the same in terms of core content to me.

  • I think you're misremembering what the monthly updates were like. They were pretty much the same as seasons, but without the renown track and the extra cosmetics. Every 3rd or 4th month was a decent sized updates with a bunch of filler events and smaller content drops in between.

  • Seems like we're getting more now than we ever got.

If you're grinding out new stuff, so it's done as fast as possible, then this is YOUR PROBLEM!!!
Do you see how many people complain, that they don't have enough time to finish the season? It's a lot! I don't get why, because it's really easy...

Anyway, we have an event, this month even 2...do that...

I'm happy, that we have so much time for this stuff, so I got enough time for other games and real life stuff

    It's simple, really.

    They don't play.

  • @personalc0ffee probably...I just mean, I see more people complaining about it's too much to do, than people complaining it's not enough to do...

  • @schwammlgott I would agree. I'm playing casually this season and I'm Rank 95.

  • @personalc0ffee me too...I'm somewhere around 70, got almost all the new commendations done and 3 factions already on top tier emissary ledger...Halo Infinite got me, that's why I'm not that far...

  • Well stop grinding them then.
You wanna talk about the everyone i know type of deal? Everyone I know doesn't complain about the new season system because they understand how to both play the game and that it's not about the quantity it's about the quality.
Seasons were improvements for both the veterans and newbies and that isn't something you can take away for your own little pleasure and "everyone you know".

  • @personalc0ffee
Ah yes dont play when i have about 100 hours in this season already, It’s just i have barely touched the new content since it looks boring and pvp will always be funner in my opinion

  • I don't mind the seasonal structure - I just wish they would have kept up with the cool names each update, instead of something as borish as S1-S5...

  • I think season is perfectly good for multiples reason, it just the events that letting it down so far. I would love to see more and new interesting challenges like this year grogmany and perhaps some new small features, mechanics or voyages like the reaper run or any other odd voyage from Bilge rat Adventure that create interaction with other people

  • All these replies sound like is a bunch of people who LOVES nothing but doing the same PVE activity on repeat for 3 months because they're absolutely blinded and in "awe" to see the game for what it really is.

It get's too stale too quickly, if an update that took them 3 months to push out, can be finished in a week with minimal effort (I'm rank 28 in the pass if that means anything) then clearly there's a serious issue with the longevity and amount of new and fresh content released.
This whole argument that this is "free updates" don't mean anything, it's just an excuse for unpolished and easily finished additions to the game that we have no apparent reason to complain about.

I'd much rather have paid DLC content that actually added some longevity to the game, other than recycled events that have nothing but bad skins that are also way too easy to finish. The hitreg issue is still a huge that hasn't been solved and it's been going on for years. But hey thanks for the cannon-rowboat!

The content that was released on a monthly basis is still repeatable and much harder to obtain everything through, the new seasons additions, are not.

Most of the seasons already have names - they're just not highlighted, which is a missed opportunity, IMO.

For example, it's Season 5: Buried Treasures.

    Season 4: The Sunken Kingdom
    Season 3: A Pirate's Life
    Season 2:
    Season 1:

I agree that there is not enough new content for 15 weeks for players who have been playing the game for a while. I usually only play on weekends and since the Season has become a thing I usually finish the new content within 4-6 weeks and then it's more like waiting for the new update.

The Season 100 levels are a good addition to the game, so that you as a player have enough time to complete all the levels, but the content that comes with the Season is too little for 15 weeks.

Season 5 is a good example of what I mean, because we got new content like:

    • Fireworks
    • Rats
    • Sitting.
    • Talking in silence and your mouth moving with it
    • Loot burying
    • New costmetics and environment changes
    • New rewards for the leaderboard
    • New event.

The thing is that fireworks, rats, sitting, talking in silence and that your mouth moves along are good and nice additions to the game, but not something that can keep you busy for 15 weeks these are more improvements to the game.

The new rewards for the leaderboard and the new event are things that are not really new to do and is more to keep the player busy during the 15 weeks, but after a month you are already more or less done with it.

Loot hiding is something that can keep you busy for a few weeks, but not for 15 weeks.

The things that were added during Season 5 are 100% nice and good things, only I personally think that such additions do not belong to a Season update. I think a Season update should keep the player busy with new content for at least 75% of the Season time and that the QoL content should come in between the Season or with the Season update and not that the QoL content is the update.

  • Quit zerging your way through content and you'd have content.

  • In all seriousness here.

I think that there is never going to be enough content for someone that can really get into the content or plays consistently over the entire season.

    There just will not be.

Seasons are designed for casual play.

Even if they were designed for relative grind play, I still do not think there will be enough content to last the full length of the season. This game isn't really about content anyways, you're supposed to make your own fun in the sandbox.

That's why we were given a QoL update in the first place.

We had a big bunch of huge things we got in season 3 and 4, it's pretty obvious not every season will have so much new stuff...this season is more a QoL update...people at Rare are just that, PEOPLE, not machines...
I expect season 6&7 to be MORE, and season 8 again just a QoL update

  • I don't think I've ever finished all the commendations (or achievements, for that matter) that come with a new season, and I find it surprising that so far I've been able to level all the way up to 100 in all previous seasons. Although I do admit that I don't play this game as if it was a laundry list of things that I gotta get through each week. I only do the ones that I find fun. Maybe that's the problem?

Even with the seasonal model, I for one fear that someday, Rare may break their own game. Because there's only so much new stuff you can throw at something that's already working before it stops working. I'm actually in awe that they've been able to bring in so much new stuff over the past year without running into this issue. How can the game get old for some people so easily? Exactly how much do some of you guys play? Or, rather, how do you play?

If your play style is goal oriented and in order to have fun you need to always be working toward some particular objective, maybe the game just isn't right for you in the long run? There have been days I've played this just to sail from one island to the next, no treasure hunting, no battles, not even fishing. And it was fine. But even if one needs the checklist thing at all times, how can you run out of things to do? Does anybody have all the cosmetics you can find? Every last commendation? Did you hunt the Shrouded Ghost? Done the final Glitterbeard challenge? The darn thing is endless.

  • From Microsoft's perspective, they don't want players only playing Sea of Thieves. They are focused on Game Pass, keeping subscribers - and having players only play one ~4 year old game, with free updates, is not beneficial (they'd just buy that one game).

So the strategy for them is really to keep players engaged casually - coming back every big update, maybe spending a few Ancient Coins in the Emporium, and playing other games as well - where, again, they can sell them microtransactions. It's all aimed at keeping their renewal turned on and spending money in-game.

Rare are doing their best with this business strategy, whilst not seeming predatory - I'm sure it's a balance between keeping Microsoft happy and keeping players happy. It's unrealistic to think a studio of that size (200-300 employees) to be able to sustain a game like Sea of Thieves with massive updates constantly - when bigger companies (Eidos Montréal being about twice the size) fail to really nail the GAAS model.

Sea of Thieves is an amazing sandbox, but it is finite. If you play constantly and grind, then you will of course reach the limits of the content. I've been playing for almost 4 years, moderately. It's my main go-to game but I have only about 1,800 hours (plus a few hundred more in [REDACTED]). This is because I have a full-time job, commitments, and I like to play other games from time-to-time. I don't grind heavily and I'm never bored with the game, there is always sometime for me to do - to work towards.

It's come along way since launch, in terms of content and QoL, and I think we need to have that perspective rather than act like ravenous wolves, never satiated. There are many areas that I personally think Rare can do better (moderation, enforcement, Partner oversight and monitoring, more timely announcements) but there's no doubt in my mind that they've managed the game itself as best they can with what resources they have.

  • Thank you RealStyli! and here's my rant...
For all you folks that are commenting about all the negative aspects of this game you think are "Boring", "Not enough content", "They need to do this" and "They need to do that" Step back a little and look at the game and what Rare has actually done for "us" the gamers. There are those of us that remember a vastly different type of game.
Take a look at past games from other publishers and developers. Games that only came on a CD/DVD and once you finished the game, that was all; the end, finito! you couldn't get anything else out of the game until it's sequel came out...and you paid for it. And what did they give us for the money? just more of the same thing, maybe a different story or item. (I.E Call of duty series, Halo, the list can go on) and again, we paid for it. there was no way we were gonna get that for free!
Point is; We should think about what we have and what they are still giving us for free despite all the hoops they need to go through to keep Microsoft and others happy.
I for one appreciate the game for what it is. You want to complain about petty aspects of the game, it's your right, but one day something will change, and not the way you want it to.
If you like/love this game, appreciate it, be supportive, remember the complexity of this type of game and some things will not be perfect.
If all you want to do is complain about silly little things; Leave the game behind and play something else...
The Devs at Rare actually enjoy giving us; the gamers, something worth gaming for and thanks to them, we continue to enjoy season after season.
So, next time you play, take a good look at what we have, and appreciate what their doing for us because one day, (Hopefully not in my lifetime) these servers will shut down for good.
    Cheers!

Devil's advocate here... Should I be punished with boredom for playing the game often? It shows that Seasons are made for casuals, which is fine, but I need something to reach for. I don't "zerg" commendations, I just pick a goal for a session and get it done. Do that for a bit and you'll find that you have all the commendations for this season. As fun as they are to complete, they were just a tutorial for the new mechanics.
I don't think monthly updates are the way to go, but I also think we need something more tangible than events that I often come in on the last day they are active and complete them. Saying that I need to play the game less to keep the content running just sounds awkward. Aren't I supposed to like playing this game? I'm going to complete what's given. But for a while I've had to default to commendation hunting and player hunting because those are still good. We're not halfway through this season and I'm already playing Arena to give my friends some wins.

My problem is that everything is made for casuals now. But when I play casually, I still get all of those things easily. What happened to goals that are made for casuals mixed with the long term goals? For a new player, there's a wealth to experience, but I'm looking for something new to do for a while. Finally we get 2 sets tied to new commendations! But the commendations are easy compared to the things that I actually like wearing. I don't think Party Boat/Midnight Blade should be harder, I'm just saying that we need a new long term goal.
I would love some new Bilge Rat Adventures, but with the path we're going down, I'll do it once and complete all the commendations for it.

Example of good casual vs. hardcore design: Tall tales with books to collect. Casuals complete the tall tale, hardcores enjoy the tall tale and also search for books. Good casual vs hardcore design: commendations for each Trading company that casuals might never look at. This has been there for APL and The Sunken Kingdom, but nothing long-term.

I'm not even sure what your point is with that.

Yes, people that embrace the entire environment and participate in all sorts of different things tend to have no issue entertaining themselves and finding enjoyment on servers

and people that focus entirely on a specific thing tend to struggle being satisfied which really isn't the dev's problem

They build a world for all types of play and give opportunity for people to create enjoyable sessions out of it.

  • To be honest, I feel like there were loads of people complaining about not getting 'proper' new content under the monthly updates system, and this is the first I've seen complaining about it for seasons.

FWIW I think the seasonal progression plus a bunch of shorter, time-limited events is good; I'm enjoying the game more than I was, say, 9 months ago

  • You can't satisfy everyone.

    Don't even try.
