Toxic and disgusting players

  • This game is great to play by yourself, but as soon as other players show up, This game becomes Horrible. Seems 50% of players are ok, but the other 50% go out of their way to ruin or wreck the game for you. can we get a rating system to rank other players as either nice ( a 10!) or Toxic (maybe 1). that way maybe you can place all nice players together and all toxic players together

  • Yeah, giving players the ability to rate others and determine where they get slotted in matchmaking couldn't possibly go wrong.

  • That's a lot of trust and power to put in the hands of pirates that often use accusations so loosely.

I wouldn't have any interest in the game anymore if people were able to turn their personal opinions and preferences into marks on others.

I have confidence that people are capable of handling their own situations when they occur, I do not have confidence that people are capable of a fair and fact based analysis consistently of how others act during an interaction and don't think their opinion should hold any universal weight

  • "Toxic" is a term that gets thrown around for so many things in SOT. Everything from a crew that simply sinks other crews, all the way to crews that throw around slurs and are truly awful.

On top of that, leaving judgement to the players on the type of servers that other players get subjected to is a terrible idea. Salty pirates will use that power incorrectly. While we'd like to think that everyone would use it correctly, that's just not the case.

If a player is truly being toxic. Record, report, and watch for the response from Rare or Microsoft letting you know of their ban.

  • but the other 50% go out of their way to ruin or wreck the game for you

need to explain. You talking about your Crew and them throwing loot off the ship into the water.
    or
Other crews sinking you because they can?

  • I was going to say something but everyone above me already said what I was going to say.

  • so the arguments against this are 'people won't give fair ratings'. it would just scale the rankings it wouldn't make them useless. however the rankings would be allowed for unfriended crewmates. it does no good to rate people from other crews. there shouldnt be an expectation that other crews are aligned (or not aligned) with your goals. however crewmates should be aligned. if after 5 minutes of being on the same crew it seems enough time to align on goals and what you'll work on. If someone loads in and was looking to do a TT and you're doing a fort so they bounce immediately, none of the crew members get to rate their experience. After 5 minutes then they can.

I have a significant amount of open crew experience and people are not terrible but they are often not consistent, considerate, and reasonable with others

A lot of people get and give nonsense over things like mics, voices, perceived skill, accents, language barriers, age, etc

People that openly show that they are not going to use any form of power responsibly and with dedication to being reasonable and fair to others in their own crew.

There are also situations in open crew where 2 friends run a brig and mistreat the 3rd person that they allow in to the crew and they could team up against the 1.

Many issues come up after conflict/combat when people turn on each other and personality clashing erupts which can be an hour or even 2+ hours into a session that was otherwise going alright and sessions do not end in a way where I would be confident in getting an accurate assessment/account from those involved.

  • @leftypirate99 GTA 5 tried the rating system and it failed. Everyone will rate anyone according to their opinion and that can't lead to objective decisions.

  • Also, statistically speaking with rating systems:

    • A majority of people will not grade on any large scale, with most defaulting to the highest rating, the mid range rating, or the lowest rating in all cases so giving a gradient won't actually get you gradient results and anything past Like, Dislike, and No Opinion will typically not net you much to be relevant
    • People are statistically more like to provide a negative rating as opposed to a positive one as those who have a good experience tend to just enjoy it and continue on with life (it takes a VERY exceptional situation to garner a positive rating from most people) while someone who had a negative experience is far more likely to express that outwardly through a rating
    • People, generally, don't objectively assess things when they apply a rating to something and what they rate it is very heavily skewed by personal preferences, biases, and perceptions

So, when you add that all up you can quickly see why this could go wrong very quickly when it is applied to people (it is bad enough with products and such). This is where personal accountability come in to play, and why a reporting system (as the game uses) tends to work much better in weeding out bad behavior overall - it is much more focused and also tends to come with provided evidence of the situation so that an appropriate assement can be made and actions taken.

  • 1st of all do what you want because a pirate is free 2nd this ecentially creates pve servers

  • Okay this is easy. If you're on XB you can go to Recent Players, find the ones you don't like and block them. Microsoft handles this for you.

  • I have blocked so many players since this game came out....

I'm at the point now where I often can only hear 2 of the 3 crew (I can hear the other players talking to the 3rd and he can hear me) but i can not hear them cause they are blocked.

And that's the way I like it!

  • What you view as toxic others might view as normal.

Personally I don't appreciate being called a sweat lord when in reality I'm not even that good. I also don't appreciate being told I have no life just because I play a game.

Those are just some examples of how the idea of why I hate the word toxic being used in games. How is it I play the game but I get called names just for playing the game. Toxic is as much of a derogatory term then anything

Or maybe I'm crazy but I'm over these type of posts.

Ultimately I think toxic labeling is most useful and accurate when it's tied to clear rule breaking

rules aren't really as much of grey areas as people sometimes suggest. Pretty clear line between day to day net/game roasts and personal attacks.

This is an area where partnered streamers and content creators can rise up to help the community by not using toxic in meme form. As well known contributors and such a staple in the sea community it's helpful if they don't feed into the joke nature of misusing such a serious accusation while playing in such a public and significantly viewed way.

Not something they would be required to do but it would be a valuable commitment to make that would help people evaluate how they word things in their own participation
