I think its time to talk about the Xbox One and Sea of Thieves.

  • I think that the devs are doing a great job these days adding on to the game with their recent updates.

But, the game has ballooned from like a 30-40 gb game to 60-70 gb game. (This is different on different platforms but the below point still matters). I'm sure this will continue to grow over time as more things get added.

With all that, comes more tasks and things to process. It becomes more complex.

I think with 2013 technology, the Xbox One might have run its course and this game.

I suggest that Rare stop supporting this platform so the Series X and PC gamers can really get more SoT later.

The past 3 years we have had complaints like Controller V Mouse/Keyboard. And load times where SSD M.2's will load way faster from the ferry (which they do).

  • Being a MS Studio, while I think this will eventually happen most likely, it is going to depend almost exclusively on market saturation of the Series X/S compared to the past consoles. I'm fairly certain that the majority are actually still on the old hardware, so that isn't going to happen (cutting out a large swath of your customers is not a good business move to make, and even harder to do if you are owned by the platform).

  • @redeyesith

I dont know the Xbox numbers. I can only go by the Steam numbers to track player counts. And its clear that players (most likely veterans) show up around major updates.

And, I can't imagine playing this game and having as much fun stuck in loading screens all the time on 2013 8gb ram DDR3 technology.

So, at some point they are going to have to make the move if Rare wants to do bigger things, like adding a bigger map or more ships on a server.

  • I play this game with my wife we both have Xbox ones. We’ve been sailing since day one. And both really enjoy it.

Although it will happen eventually, I can’t get or afford two new Xbox’s. So until they actually stop supporting it we’ll be here to slow you down.

    Happy sailing

  • some of the best among us play on those old rickety xbox's
    not in performance but community

they have the pure adventurer's spirit and they put up with a lot of frustration to embrace parts of the game that are often overlooked by those caught up in performance and result

Dunno what is to come but a lot of them have the right idea about what this game is about and I appreciate that about 'em

  • Wooooooow Spark 0.

LOL, game file size has absolutely nothing to do with the performance on the console. Furthermore the install size is nowhere near the 60-70 GB size on the One like you are claiming - it is closer to 35-40GB (at work now so would have to check on my console once I got home). It is much larger on the Series X because of those additional 4K textures that are not necessary on the One. Many other games have install sizes around 100GB (Red Dead Redemption 2, Halo: MCC, and CoD Warzone are just a couple of examples) and they suffer no performance issues on the One. And let's not forget most of the heavy calculations are done server side and not on the console itself (such as all the wave calculations and hit detection) so older consoles are definitely not holding it back in that regard. Come back when you get some knowledge about how computers actually work instead of spouting uneducated nonsense like this to support your idea.

Support for the game on the One is not going away anytime soon due to the new consoles not having enough of a base yet to support this, partially due to the availability of the consoles during the chip shortage and that it is still very early in the new console cycle (not even being a year into it yet). So save your elitism.

  • @dlchief58 I don't think he was being 'elite' about it bro, just speculating the game could be expanded if supported primarily on newer machines with better specs.

There was no elitism, the guy just said that he thinks the OG Xbox has run its course and is holding development back.

  • xCloud should save those that are still on the XBone variants.

  • I suggest that Rare stop supporting this platform

hahaha....Who do you think supports Rare and SoT? Microsoft...what does Microsoft own? Xbox One.

  • @lord-spark-0 I play on the Xbox One S memory/storage is not a problem 1TB and performance is wonderful. We don’t own PCs or do we intend to own them ever again. Are entire family moved to the Apple eco system 12 years ago. Best move we ever made. I could add a keyboard and mouse to my Xbox but I prefer feet up on the couch controller play on a 42 inch HDR TV in my man cave 😂. For the record very few Microsoft games are made for PC. There is a never ending supply on the Xbox store. Do you realize this game runs on the Unreal Engine? I played the first two games released by Epic Games Unreal in 1998 and Unreal Tournament.
I spend a lot of time on YouTube and Twitch. Those $3000 PCs don’t look any better. Why? Sea of Thieves isn’t graphically intensive because server size is small scale ie 4 boats.

  • @dlchief58 you sound like a salty Xbox one player who black screens for 6 years, the game is 61.8gb so maybe you check ur sources, furthermore they definitely could stop supporting Xbox one and the rest of one family because the game is already dead on Xbox. PC is their main platform now

    BAahhahah

Who do you think develops the game FOR the Xbox One?

    Get it?

LOL, you are the one that needs to cheek their facts as the game is STILL most popular on the Xbox format - PC is a distant second, even when combining Steam and Windows 10. One users still greatly outnumber the Series X|S users as well, mainly due to the lack of availability of those consoles. They cannot and will not stop support for the One for at least a few more years due to the shear number of players still on that platform.

And FYI I don't have any black screen issues on either my One nor my Series S. That is because I am smart enough to invest in a quality external, 7200 RPM hard drive for my One and never rely on the slow internal drive or a cheap external like many do. I did neglect to check the install size this weekend, but I stand by my statement that you and the OP are most likely wrong on that...and if I am mistaken (which I will admit once confirmed, I'm not taking some biased unknown person's word for that, especially an elitist like yourself), it is irrelevant as I already said - which anyone with an inkling of knowledge in the field would know.

    Yeah, right 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣🤣

  • I think right now while the Series X is so hard to get ahold of, this would be a really bad idea. You also have to think of the Xbox One X which is a pretty powerful console and shouldn’t be excluded.

  • My friends and I also play on an Xbox One. We run the game from external SSDs so we don’t have issues with black screen loading times. We still can’t find the newer generation consoles in stock, and we refuse to reward the groups reselling them at much higher prices. Until MS gets the supply under control we will keep playing on the Xbox One. Ditch supporting us and we will just play something else. Those of us on the Xbox One are not an insignificant proportion of the SoT player base. I doubt Rare is planning on ditching us.

While I understand couch gaming is fun, trust me those pcs make the game look and feel better. Most twitch stream are streamed in 1080 and not native resolutions. For example when I stream its in 1080@60 while I'm playing at 2k@140ish. You won't see the difference watching a streamer. My frame of reference is owning and playing on an Xbox 1X, Xbox Series X, and my main gaming rig. You can't even compare how the game feels and looks on the current gen vs a high end Pc as they are in different worlds.

    @lord-spark-0

Just remember if they remove the Xbox one they also need to bump the minimum requirements on Pc as those are currently worse than last gen consoles.

  • Ignore this comment.

  • @ninja-naranja said in I think its time to talk about the Xbox One and Sea of Thieves.:

@captain-coel not everyone either has enough money to get a high end PC or wants to. Please don’t try to belittle people for their gaming preferences.

Wasn't meant to. The reply was targeting the response about how viewing on twitch and YouTube that expensive rigs do not make a difference when they do in fact.

I usually defend keeping the old machines in service, even more now then ever given the supply/demand issues plaguing the gaming world.

  • Firstly, it is not Rare, but Microsoft who says what happens in their Store, Rare is also part of the Microsoft Studios and Microsoft released their plans.
Secondly, you contradicted yourself because high-resolution textures are increasing the size of games, 4k support is a big driver here, so that you actually want to say that Rare should stop supporting the new consoles should you want to have sense behind your post.

  • Ahoy!

Our belief when it comes to gaming is that it should be accessible to everyone and we have, and always will support all aspects of hardware within the Microsoft family.

Our intention is that Sea of Thieves will always have a home on both console and PC, to cater to the wide breadth of gamers who enjoy sailing the seas.

    Dropping anchor here.

    Thanks,
