QoL Suggestion: Allow the Map Table to be jump-over-able

  • Picture this. Your ship has been boarded, the enemy crew is standing in a corner behind the Map Table (on a Sloop / Brig) with Blunderbuss drawn, and as a new player your first thought is to jump the map table avoiding direct line of fire only to be a blocked by an invisible wall. It looks jump-over-able after all.

I’m not a new player. I know the map table has an invisible wall, and it’s always been this way since launch- but why?

    • To keep it’s view clear from any distractions? - Then why can pets occasionally sleep on top of it.

    • To prevent loot / items blocking the map’s view? - Then why allow cannons and harpoons to have items placed on them (if you jump and drop).

    • To stop trolling crew-mates (Open Crew) from blocking the view? - Then nothing’s getting done anyway, you’re very unlikely to have a huge stash of loot to entirely block the view, and if 3 crew-mates are laying down to entirely cover the map, you may as well just hop servers and let them continue doing nothing.

Unless I’ve severely under thought this, I see no reason we shouldn’t be able to jump on/ over the table- drop loot items on top of it if we so choose- and even emote pose on top of it like one of Jack’s (Titanic) french girls if we really wanted.

It’s the only part of a ship we’re not allowed on, and I can’t think of 1 solid reason why it’s prevented. Can you?

Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts (and even an official response for better insight). Cheers mateys!

  • It's probably because the player collision box is taller than the space between the roof and the top of the table.

  • @d3adst1ck It's not on a sloop though, there is plenty of head height before you reach the canopy.

  • @wsurftvveeds hmm, that's true. Could just be for consistency or they don't want obstructions on the table then I guess.

I want to say that player jump height isn't high enough to clear the top of the table, but I don't think you can cannon or lunge over the sloop map table from the back either which implies it's being blocked on purpose.

  • I think that you shouldn't be able to stand on, or drop things onto, most higher ship surfaces such as the map table, quest table, cannons, wheel, capstan, door, or really anything interactable. The shelf, though? That's okay.

Yeah, I get your thinking here. It was from that other thread (about the loot on the capstan) that got me thinking about the map table- more specifically if they prevented dropping items on the capstan, Rare would also have to prevent a player from being able to jump on and over the capstan too which isn’t ideal. I’m often jumping it in the heat of a sword duel.

It’s odd that it’s just the map table you can’t drop items on and more specifically get on top of if there’s enough head-height clearance (Sloop) but can understand now perhaps why it’s this way due to the limited head height clearance the Galleon or Brig have in the name of consistency.

Didn’t think of that! I know the Sloop has enough head-height clearance, not sure about the Brig or Galleon now I come to think of it.
