Fixing Arena

  • As far as I can tell there are a few improvements that could help the arena.

Boring downtime between rounds. This is the biggest problem & I have made the suggestion before that a TDM area should be included where pirates can fight just hand to hand in a free for all. A few doors around the tavern you can jump through to go to an island/location and practice your sword and gun skills to kill time. When you die you respawn back in the Tavern. 30 seconds before the main event the portals close & immortal skellies spawn and swarm the players to send them back to the tavern.

Crew assignment. This is just for open vs open crews. After each round, the crews should shuffle on skill metrics and ranking from the last round for a more even fight.

Lack of different game modes Players should be able to vote on the type of game between rounds to spice things up. Doing the same game gets repetitive and hence boring.

    • The current capture the chest.

    • Pirate king of the seas: Ships score 1 point per sec inside the lit-up area, 3 points if they are the sole ship, lit area moves around the map.

    • Fox and the hounds: One ship is the target of all others, they score points for how long they can survive up to a maximum of X points. Once they are sunk or they stay alive for the max points all ships reset & a new ship is picked with each team being the fox once. Sinking a ship does not reset their points on this one, players get points for damage to the foxes ship & the fox the hounds but no points for hound vs hound.

    • Fort assault: Pirates split into two teams, stronghold defenders vs reapers. Defenders get one sloop and a fort to defend. The other team are the reapers that just get ships and have to destroy towers on the fort to open the door to the vault. Once the reapers board the island to grab the chest they have to run it back to the turn-in location. Teams then switch. Silver is assigned to the number of ships sunk, players killed, towers knocked down.

    • Man of war: Same as sort of deal as Fort assault but it's the Man of war we have all been waiting for vs a fleet of brigs/sloops. Main of war has to sail from one side of the map to another, including past a few forts to deliver a shipment of gold. This could even be on a set path by the AI. Defending players would just man the cannons, repeal borders, and repair holes. Attacking players would still sail as normal.

    • Last ship sailing: Each ship gets two respawns. Points are awarded as normal but a sunk ship does not have its points reset. To keep it fast and give eliminated players something to do (instead of quitting) when you run out of lives you and your ship respawns as ghosts. Can't take damage but can give it (no points gained as ghosts) at the cost of slower turning. Raming does zero damage and you can't board the other ships.

  • It's dead bro. Leave it be

The only thing that could save it now is making it FREE TO PLAY

  • Arena is nice idea, but the matchmaking is disaster. You do not need a playground if the next round begins in a minute. Right now you are waiting to get more plp, but more plp leave bc they are bored. Then you join 2 lobby together to get more plp and wait more.
I like the idea for more modes. Just the waiting time between rounds and matchmaking needs rework before anything else.

  • @miserenz lets hope they fix chest tracking at least, and do some minors like:

Seasonal progress, within current seasonal progress system (not separate one)
    Chest tracking
    Current win prize increase
    Communication (dont think they will)
Monthly leaderboards (like emissaries have now)

I fully support all arena topics, hope it does not die!

  • I think if matchmaking were fixed, it would resolve the whole "dead lobby" issue.

Move incomplete open crews to the crew ledger menu, and merge/re-assign them as necessary.

We shouldn't have lobbies with multiple open crews, with 2 or fewer players per-ship. These crews should be combined to create more full crews, leaving more space in the lobby for closed or complete crews to load in.

It's how it works in almost any other competitive game I've played. Unless you're loading in with a full team, the game will assign your teammates (based on randomness or whatever SBMM system) prior to the start of each match.

  • My humble take on Arena is that the problems run quite deep and are quite nuanced with it. To my mind there isn't just one fix all for the myriad of issues that have crept into Arena mode. I do enjoy the mode but I agree on matchmaking. Not sure if fixing match making alone brings the Arena back to its former glory.

  • @hijack-hayes

    What are the other problems?
