Well there goes a pretty exclusive hard to get title.
Are you going to increase the spawnrate of the shrouded ghost anytime soon as well finally?
So woodplank merchant contract spawn rate are increased huh?
When I saw this, my heart sank. All the tool and trouble for that commendation was worthless now. Rare are now deciding to destroy people’s’ hard work. Is there any hope of this getting reversed?? Because quite frankly this is a massive slap on the behind to those who bother going out of their way to do stuff in this game!
@arctroopachedda There was no hard work... You get a bottle by RNG or you wasted the time spawning in, looting an outpost dry, and if you get a wood crate you cash it. Rinse and repeat. People are making this into some awesome feat that it's not.

Hard work? Lol. Who cares?... People gets entitled for such minor things.
Entitled for a grind that requires effort? lol
There isn't anything wrong with people valuing a grind no matter what the reward is.
The game is turning into a cheesefest with less and less significance I think that's something all of us grinders will need to accept and adapt to or move on from but it's not entitlement to want to have significance of effort in the game even if you don't value it.
The same views in this thread could be used against Hunter's Call
It's just rng, it's just casting, who cares?
People should care about things or at least have the opportunity to dedicate themselves. It's why people stick around games like this. People enjoy having things to chase and put in effort for. You need both casual play AND grinders to make a game like this successful.
@betrayme84 except rare has in the past when nerfing the challenge of finishing a commendation given out the "Overachiever Sails". They should do something for people who finished "Merchant Shipwright" before today.
@wolfmanbush I personally find it hard to care about a commendation based on wood crates, same goes for a lot of people from what I've seen in responses here and in other threads.
I get what you mean about rewarding grinds, but it should be given to commendations that require a grind significant to the game and not ones that gain significance due to an oversight or bug.
I'm all for difficult commendations that require a level of dedication to obtain and we should keep asking for rewarding endgame, this woodcrate commendation I've always seen as a bit frivilous however

if it doesn't matter then why change it?
It's not necessary to do it's something people have chose to invest their grind time into. The grind was established bug or oversight or whatever it was a long established grind.
This isn't a case of something not mattering it's just another case of making something easier for people that don't want to put in the effort and don't appreciate the effort.
@wolfmanbush I wouldn't call it a case of them making things easier... they literally fixed a bug. It was never meant to be that way. I understand your pov though. I just feel like the wood crate thing was ridiculous. There was no difference in trying for the commendation and not trying for it, either way, you needed to get randomly lucky for it. I had times where i'd try, and find none, and then randonly sailing, i find two. It was a bug, and got squashed,
Although I would like compensation for those who did it, that'd be fair.

for a bug that affects performance or balance or anything like that that's one thing
but when it's related to a grind and it exists a long time that is just an established grind at that point. Bug or not it's an established grind and changing that gets rid of the standards for the grind
I think the fact that it's not significant to rewards it what makes it more significant to the grind. When something is difficult and doesn't have some huge payday that everyone wants to chase it makes it more rewarding to those that sacrifice for it.
The problem with having past and present rewards is it kind of opens up the convo to do it for everything. Do we have a pre-checkpoint gold curse? Do we have pre kraken commendations for when they used to sink us all buffed out of their minds? What about the people that did 500 million chicken voyages? on and on
Could avoid issues by just having a few grindy things left in the game whether it's bugged or rng or whatever. As long as it's doable (and it is) they can leave it
Most of this game now is completely casual friendly. They can pretty much do most things now.
I dread the day when they kill my unicorn Hunter's Call.
I'd just like to know how in the world could this possibly have been a bug? Did someone come across the numbers, see the disparity and just assume it was a typo or something?
I'd need to hear from whoever originally set the numbers, or otherwise programmed this. To ever be convinced this was a bug. And not just Rare changing a number in a database theyve decided is off now 3 years later.
@musicmee ....Thats not evidence of it being a bug. But having read the patchnotes now, Rare isnt really claiming it was a bug. Just an "issue" thats been changed. And I'm saying that I doubt it was orignally "unintended" So people cant say here well its just a bug that they're fixing.
@dekeita Sorry I didn't explicitly describe it as an Issue, oh well. Glad they fixed this bu--- wait I mean oversigh-- darn woops I mean't issue

Crates previously could take an average of 5-8 hours of straight server hopping to get just one.
50 crates done this way would take 400 hours.
It is definitely hard and tedious work.
To combat this, entire communities sprouted up to help one another. It still takes a long time to get all 50.
Wood apes, strong.

The Maniacs! They blew it up! Our beloved commendation! They blew it up!
@dekeita I just don't like hearing that it isn't impressive or something you had to work hard at.
Yes you could just get them as you play, but it would technically still take you around 400 hours prior to the update and that's considering the better side of the RNG.
The Merchant Shipwright title is MASSIVELY impressive. It is one of the rarest titles in the game, next to the Shrouded Ghost ones.

Just memeing about Planet of the Apes. But yes as we discussed since, I agree with you. And just to share this story with everyone.
When @EliEelEye got Merchant Shipwright we had a little ceremony and took a screenshot. After PL it's the only commendation I've bothered to take a screenshot of when I got it. It was a cool little thing cause it showed dedication.
But Rare killed it.
@personalc0ffee Honestly the time you all wasted grinding for that nonsense, I got the commendation playing normally and selling the crates along the way.
@dekeita said in So woodplank merchant contract spawn rate are increased huh?:
My guess is that it was in fact the rarest commendation in the game. And will still be so for a little while anyway. Aside from Legendary Hunter of SG which no one has. But I think merchant shipwright is rarer then the regular SG comm
No one has? https://imgur.com/rQ12cW5
@ikobi-blade Legendary Hunter of the Shrouded Ghost is for killing 5 Shrouded Ghosts, not just one.
I actually believe someone in Tavern has this title but it is extremely rare and is no doubt, the rarest title in the game.
