AFK Warning

  • Hi, I just started playing this game recently. I had been playing solo for a few hours and had a boatload of treasure as well as storage boxes ammo, a ton of supplies and such.

I was semi afk waiting for a couple of friends who were about to log in and got kicked from the game with no warning losing everything.

It would be nice to have an AFK timer / warning to prevent getting logged out. (Especially since you lose all of your stuff when you log out.)

  • I don't like it

the game is based around activity of some kind

features that enable inactivity aren't helpful. They help people get around the timer which is in place to prevent long afks

counter productive and there are side effects as well like helping tuckers potentially and helping people stuck in the brig trying to be annoying

No real positive from this being a feature imo

Afking affects the entire server negatively. Less producing less activity and the entire server suffers from it. That space should be opened up for people that are able to play the game and stay active

  • heh, and I just got kicked again in the time it took to find this forum and write the request, then text with someone on my phone for a couple of minutes. I didn't have a huge horde this time though.

for a session based timer it's not that short

I walk around when I'm sailing all the time just not for long amounts of time. Plenty of time for the bathroom (provided you didn't have taco bell in a heat wave) and time to grab some ice and a snack or do a short chore or address a short immediate situation

if it is something that is gonna take a bit or can potentially take a bit you should just sell anyway because if the server doesn't take you out a pirate will

How do you go semi afk?
Your in a game, why are you not going about sailing and waiting. Not just standing doing nothing. Your holding up space.
10-15min is the timer I believe.

  • @burnbacon You go semi afk by being at your PC on a 2nd screen or in front of the game on your phone or something. AFK in game, but not literally AFK... semi AFK.

I mean... There are plenty of ways to make an AFK macro of some sort, but it's not too much to ask for an AFK warning. Most games have one.

  • @venatorlupos Or the easier thing is to take some responsibility yourself and monitor your time better when you are away to prevent this from happening - it isn't that hard to do.

  • @venatorlupos

I bet you have a phone/watch/PC/eggtimer/iPad that you could set for 10 minutes if this is a problem for you and you are always getting kicked for AFK..

  • It really isn't a big deal to just have a simple 5 second warning that pops up on your screen and then closes, I don't see why everyone is upset about this thread, but if they don't add a timer, and u need to be afk for a little while what I do Is I plug a controller into my pc and just do the rubber band trick. But again, this thread shouldn't be firing people up as much as it is, I see no problem with an afk warning.

  • @leadvolley

np dude, you can delete by the way, just below edit.

If I am in the middle of a long session and need to take a break for whatever (like you sometimes do) I'll tuck my ship behind a rock, make a note of the time and make sure I am back to move before 10 minutes is up. It's not difficult is it? Personally I am more worried about getting ganked in that time rather than getting kicked, an in game timer would encourage people to be more oblivious to what's going on imo.

  • @dlchief58 Easier than making a "Waltz" Macro one time and hitting a button to AFK? Probably not. xD You can make the macro as quickly as you can set a timer on your phone. That's beside the point though. I already said there are easy ways to prevent getting kicked. My way is just better than yours. ;p (Especially in a semi AFK situation where you can keep an eye on the screen. Make the waltz macro look back and forth so you can watch for enemy ships.)

If you're going to be snarky, at least have the best idea.

  • Using an emote extends the timer, or at least it used to. If I remember, GalacticGeek timed the countdown and found using an emote may have been up to twenty minutes before getting kicked.

  • @venatorlupos

Macros don't extend the timer all that much. Rare fixed afkers macro'ing to avoid afk timer so the game recognizes patterns and will still kick you if you are macro'd :):)

  • @xultanis-dragon Try ghost mouse.

LOL, you mean actually paying attention to time away is more work than making a macro? Oh my, what has happened to our youth these days with them not taking any personal responsibility for their own actions (or lack thereof in this case).

It is not hard to keep track of time, especially if you are already still at the computer doing other stuff. Not being snarky, just practical.

  • @dlchief58 Youth? I'm probably older than you. xD... and yes, pushing a button is easier. I don't know where you think your "personal responsibility" tirade applies here. Life happens in the middle of playing a game sometimes. Hell, googling a YouTube video to learn something about playing the game usually takes longer than 10 min.

It's fine though. I work from home and have AI that does 80% of my job for me. AI can do far more complex things than something as simple as an AFK bot that you can get for free. We're in a technological world where Rare can't stop someone from going AFK and pushing a button to prevent getting kicked out no matter how hard they try.

Maybe instead they should focus on making disincentives for using an AFK bot so people won't feel the need to use one in the first place. After all, if people have the bot, they're more likely to use it more often and for longer periods of time. So it's an Oedipus Rex situation where the action taken to solve a problem actually causes it or makes it worse.

Something as simple as a warning before getting kicked is a great place to start disincentivizing people from feeling like they need one.

  • I too walk the dog while playing Sea of Thieves

Use of macros is a violation of the ToS, don't want you getting the wrong idea. They are not allowed.

If you are caught or detected using one, you can have action taken against your account.

  • Maybe don’t just sit idle waiting for people while playing on your phone or another screen? There’s currently plenty of time to step away for a drink or using the restroom, hell I’ve even gone to do laundry once or twice. You being kicked while being present is all on you.

For some reason this doesn't surprise me

  • You get kicked from the session after 10 minutes of inactivity. Don't be afk for 10 minutes straight and you're fine...
