Pirate Emporium Overpriced

  • so is it me or is literally everything in the emporium over priced??? why not 1. lower prices 2. allow us to use alternative currency like gold, dabloons, ancient coins, etc.

it should not cost 10.00 to get a costume….ridiculous

im really surpised that no one complains about this

  • @madfrito99 The pirate emporium is a premium shop, therefore stands to reason that items within cost real money. The prices haven't changed since the launch of the PE, and neither has the concept of not purchasing from it, if it's too expensive.

  • @madfrito99 If shop items were mandatory for progress I would agree. Like other cash shops, they are simply following the Pareto principle...80/20 rule. The vast majority of players who wouldn't give $10, wouldn't give a $1 either.

  • mostly fine with me

only thing I'd criticize is the collector versions.

For some reason I don't like that marketing strategy. I'd rather them be a bit more and just have one set. Just something that rubs me the wrong way but the rest is fine imo especially because how cheap stuff gets eventually with sales

  • I would not say anything is overpriced.
Everything available is a luxury item for the game and not necessary for game play.
The money is income, in part, to keep the game alive and I haven't any issue with treating myself to some items that bring me a bit of joy in the game.
For the entertainment I get, I think the price is more than fair. Other forms of entertainment are far more expensive and more transient in nature.

    Edited for spelling and grammar.

  • @madfrito99 The pricing structure has been the same since the launch of the PE. Not sure which costume you are looking at, but the new Pirates of the Caribbean costumes I’m sure are licensed through Disney, so Rare and Microsoft now more than likely have to pay fees for selling the likeness of Jack Sparrow. If the cost is too steep, it’s not a requirement to buy in order to enjoy the game.

  • For kids. Yes they are overpriced.
    For adults. No.
(Some adults. We’re not all rich for video game costume or stuff we can’t physically touch)

You don’t have to buy anything if it’s not in your price range.

  • You can get about 8$ worth if you get to level 100 on the season lol

  • The Emporium is optional as f...ish.

I purchased a few articles from it but in general the themes there feel very out of place for me.
I wish there would be something I would want so much I actually pay with Ancient Coins not just collected ingame, but purchased with real money.

Well - only the future can say.

  • $40 for a collector ship set is a bit extreme for sure.

At one point I thought it might make sense to use doubloons to offset the purchase to a minimum of say $20, but between alliance servers and other exploits, that idea would need some serious resetting to the economy.

I'd like if they did a kind of coupon system. Maybe make a discount on certain emporium items a findable reward that drops every now and again, and offers a discount for a limited time on specific sets or free items.

Some goodwill for players who play often and a great way to incentivize buying the rest of the set. They sort of do this with plunderpass, but I think some in addition in game random drops would incentive people to voyage again.

I know a lot of people already buy ship sets at full price though, so if it works it works business wise.

  • Overpriced compared to what? It's a pretty fair system they have going. 100% optional premium cosmetics with no effect on gameplay, and you can even acquire premium shop currency in-game through the free plunderpass and ancient skeletons.

Other games have random crates (basically gambling) where you have to keep buying to get what you want, "cosmetics" that actually have gameplay benefits, or just straight up pay to win systems.

  • @burnbacon I will say gaming (on console) is one of the less costly hobbies. Even including micro transactions. At least I’ve found it to be less costly comparing it to other hobbies that friends of mine have.

  • @pithyrumble I think you mean $2.50

  • Bought many sets of ships, cosmetics pets and emotes but I must say that the ship sets are too expensive.
Ive let it slide but if were talking about it they are overpriced.

  • I don't find it ridiculous at all. I'm not wealthy in the slightest, but personally I don't mind supporting a game I like. I buy the Plunder Pass, I bought all the Dark Warsmith for my love of Blackbeard, I got the Battletoads ship because my UN means frog in Russian, I got the Bear and Bird because Banjo and Kazooie is a childhood favorite, and I completely bought out the Pirates Life section of the Emporium the day it dropped because I'm a huge POTC fan. All the said, I might be biased. But a pet is the cost of a pack of coke, an outfit the price of a meal at a restaurant, and a ship is about the price of a bottle of liquor. To me, that's not very expensive for something I'm dumping hours of my life into.

  • @madfrito99 If you don't like it, don't buy it. Those items are looks only, they aren't going to make you look experienced to others, it will just please you.
If those prices will keep the development alive, I don't care about how how high they are. I buy my share of weapon show-off emotes every month, and between ancient skeletons and season rewards, I get those for free half the time. The only time I buy something is if I really like the look (KI cannon flare, Eternal Freedom Ship, Season 3 Plunder Pass).

  • @madfrito99 Things go on sale every now and then, so if you're wanting something particular keep a watch out for when its price is marked down for a bit.

  • The ship sets are the only thing I see as over-priced and, because of the price structure, you can't save money by buying sets without the non-collector figureheads/sails and getting the collector versions instead.

It also irks me that unlocking a ship cosmetic with the Plunder Pass doesn't give you a discount on the rest of the set - this should really be a thing! If anything that makes me want the full set even less as I'd be paying the same price for effectively less items.

I'm okay with pretty much everything else in the Emporium and, unless I really want it, I usually wait for a sale on ship sets.

  • It is like a restaurant, of the prices are high...people stop going instead of complaining about the prices.

Same here... Around 23 euro's for a ship cosmetic, welcome in the world of micro transactions and people want to squeeze out all money instead of having a bugless update of expension first.

I blame the head of Rare and Microsoft game dev of coming up with these ideas.

    • for instance, i tried to have tale tall 2 of a pirate's life getting the chest of sorrows thru a barrier of water for a commandation..guess what..third time trying still bugged.

Still a costume costs 10 euro, a pet almost 10 euro, shop design 23 euro..

  • The reason I’m fine with it is because we can get these special coins through ancient skeletons and season pass without pay. Yes it becomes a bit of a grind but it is still possible

But can I ask matey - when did you buy the game and for how much?
Sea of Thieves has been out for over 3 years now.
Apart from the initial launch on XBOX and Windows, then the Steam launch, there have been no other ways of Rare receiving funds for their work. How many people will buy the game three times for three platforms (two really as the Windows key works for two platforms)?

Also - think about how many Pirates sail on the back of GamePass!

You say you blame Rare and Microsoft for coming up with these ideas and for not giving us a bugless expansion - I say thank you to Rare and Microsoft for giving us THREE YEARS of FREE updates for their game that they could well have charged us for as DLC!

@madfrito99 I direct you to the same point above matey as to why the shop is necessary and why really it isn't THAT expensive - you even earn Ancient Coins now through the seasons. It cost me all of £1.50 to buy a new pet Whippet last night - hardly breaking my bank account!

Ah, a fellow crewmate! Happy to see you onboard the forums!

Since everyone else seems to be addressing what I already would have addressed meself, I'll just say that alternative forms of currency are available - at least sort of. You can switch between paying with ancient coins, or just straight up use $$$. It's your choice at the press of a button (as listed at the bottom of the screen within the Emporium menu).

BTW, looking forward to sailing with you again! 😁👍

  • I can't say I mind too much. I wish they have sales more often then they do, or bumped the price of the emporiums oldest stuff down a peg, that's about the limit of my qualms.

You can pay to look fancy, but all the stuff you do in the game has only ever needed the purchase of the game itself (or game pass), and after playing the game for 3 years, I don't mind buying the Pegasus boat set.

End of the day, the development team need to make a certain amount of moolah back to justify ongoing support of the game we enjoy. They could make emporium stuff cheaper, but they are still going to need the same amount of revenue from the player base. There's probably an argument to be made about being willing to buy 2 or 3 cosmetic sets for £30, but £30 for 1 set is too much, but the domino of that is asking rare to put 2 - 3 more content into the emporium.

  • Compared to other games I play, the Pirate Emporium is super affordable.
