Some improvements that I feel would make the game nice, as a new player.

  • First I want to say that for the most part, I really enjoy the game. It's a wonderful game that is often times well thought out and well done. The art style does it a surprising amount of justice, the characters are unique, and me and my friends have a whole lot of fun sailing the sea of thieves. There are a few things that I take issue with though.

    1. Outposts are one of the least safe areas in the game. For what was often times a safe area for actual pirates and for areas that could very easily act as major community hubs, these are areas that are generally tense and awful to be in, especially when playing alone. The moment I spot another ship I immediately leave, particularly if the ship is larger than mine. The reason is simple. Other pirates can freely enter your ship, take your treasure and provisions, and kill you as much as they want. You of course can do the same to them. I have yet to see an instance of my several days of playing where two ships enter an outpost at the same time and one doesn't come out on fire and sinking. Not only does this not encourage a community, it is also extremely frustrating, as several hours of sailing the sea, looting islands and completing quests, can be brought to an entirely fruitless end in the matter of ten minutes when you come across a larger ship at the outpost that decides they don't want to follow the pirate code of handling things at sea.

I would propose (as a person who is not a coder by trade and is certainly not familiar with your engine) that you simply make it so that people cannot attack and so that people cannot enter ships if they do not belong to it's crew as long as they are in an outpost's zone. Obviously on the high seas it's all fair game, but in an outpost that has a tavern and all sorts of quirky characters, I would much much rather socialize than be paranoid. It would be much nicer if I could use our local voice chat to sing shanty's with people instead.

    1. The next thing I propose again pertains to outposts. It is extremely tedious to sell all of your stuff, especially if you are hauling a substantial amount of loot. I noticed that the ship seems to log every piece of treasure that enters it automatically. Could you not add a ledger that displays your loot and allows you to sell it without having to go back and forth from ship to shore to shop? It can take 20 minutes to unload everything, especially if you're parking job is bad. This is only exasperated by the previous issue of outposts allowing open hostility between pirates, as it causes the time constraint to feel far more present.

    2. I can't seem to invite my friends to my crew and I have no idea why. I can join their crew but for some reason they just don't get my invites.

    1. No safe zones, its not going to be a thing, and that line in the pirate code about handling things at sea is refering to keeping it game and not boiling over to the forums, reddit, twitter, etc.

    2. It is supposed to take time, that way you are at risk of being attacked, do not carry more than you are willing to lose

    3. This is likely an issue with your or their game installs, im clueless I play on an xbox series x, windows pc, and sometimes steam version and do not have these issue. Im sorry I cant help here.

  • first one pretty much stops being a significant issue with experience. I very very rarely have any outpost issues without really any focus on it at all. It just stops being a thing.

second one just fill a harpoon rowboat and harpoon on land and sell everything within a minute or two.
Don't do the whole stack loot below deck thing or hide it, it does absolutely no good and only slows people down

Experience turned into efficiency really gets rid of most issues in this game

I didn't realize I could bring the rowboats home with me. That actually changes a few things.

You'll want it to be harpoon for sure as you can drag yourself to a good spot where you can easily access the different factions, which isn't hard to do at most outposts.

Never sell at dagger tooth unless you have to. Sell at galleon's grave if you're in the area. 100x easier to sell there. Exception being merchant hauls as it's easy to sell merchant anywhere

if you have a bunch of ashen chest stuff or ritual skulls or athena stuff to sell down the road don't sell at ancient spire because you have to climb the spire every time to sell something. Example is if you do a fleet that drops 3 ashen chests 2 of which you will be able to unlock with keys and a bunch of ritual skulls. You don't want ancient spire for that haul. You won't want to sell a thieves haven voyage haul there either for the same reason.

these are just things that come with experience. You'll pick up all kinds of useful tips and tricks along the way
