Sooooo 8 player ship confirmed?

  • I was just looking through the trailer and noted the ghost ships. Especially the 7 cannons per side, the capstain, and also the decorations in the hull livery. That is, hopefully, preluding to the future Man o War/Indiaman, or what ever they wanna call an eight man ship.

    Also, Lateen sails on this model and the Dutchman. Including Gaff sails, so more sail types coming to the future as well?

  • It could potentially just be a phantom Flying Dutchman or black pearl (Davy Jones ship, I can’t remember what it’s called as it’s been awhile since I’ve seen the films)

  • @cheatingpirate these bigger ships are probably just NPC ships...there is no bigger ship/crew than galleon/4-man needed...not just because of the obvious balance issues

  • @thundercharg @schwammlgott Yeah you got the Dutchman's ship down.

    As for balance, it can work out if done correctly. Like here, cannons are below the main deck, so no one can guard ladders and turn sails with everyone on cannons. And likely, if water gets to the ports, it will flood through the ports like with the Vasa. I believe it can be balanced and only need the best crew to be good

  • One of the only things that can save this update is if some new/expanded game features come with it, like different ships. etc.

  • Anything more than a 4 man ship would be OP. No matter how the ship itself is balanced, if a 5-8 person crew gets the board on an anchored ship, it's going to be impossible for a smaller crew to escape that. Spawn farms would be game ruining.

    The servers absolutely aren't to handle yet another shiptype, crewed by even more people, sailing across the map with 3 other types of player crew ships, several thousand times over

    You have a very fine balance right now between the largest crew size (4 person galleon) and the smallest crew size (solo sloop). The balance honestly is already pushed to its limits in my opinion.

    So a theoretical 5 to 6 person ship would have to be slower and clunkier than a galleon, which wouldn't feel fun although it would probably be very fast at full billow.

    Balance issues aside, unless they increased the player/ship count on a server, one of these ships would take up about 25% of the server space for players. Imagine 25% of server space being taken up by one crew that's anchored in the middle of nowhere doing nothing or out in the Devil's Roar all night. It would make servers feel very dead.

    I would however love it if we could somehow change the design of our ships at the shipwright, because I NEED this design.

    Could work like this:

    Ship spawns in default like normal. Shipwright has a new tab called "ship schematic" and in that tab are unique models that you can toggle to change the physical appearance of the ship.

    So in this instance, you could select this new ship model, and still apply whatever cosmetics you like.

  • While I would love for a ship that is big enough for my large crew, I don't think we'll be getting that oft rumored Man o' War 8 player ship. It would be incredibly hard to balance.

    I do hope that we get a better customization system like we were promised back at launch. I'd love to have more control of how my ship is designed. At least let me name my ship! The Drunken Kraken needs a proper nameplate!

    If the ships hitbox changes with the cosmetic the smallest most adventageous hitbox will be found and everybody will sail with that exclusively. So if they ever change ship models the hitbox should remain the same. Which will in turn make for wonky stuff happening. Cannonball holes floating in mid air for instance.

  • Im really confused about the balance argument, in order to put a ship that STILL going to be OP, you just want to make it super tedious?
    Its just a bad solution, a much more simple solution is just to make servers for bigger ships.
    Other ship are going to stay in the mixed servers, I think Rare did a great job to balance them but anything else would break the balance and create meta, so I believe that the only true compromise is to have Man O War servers.
