Something ought to be done about bunny hopping

  • I am sure everyone here knows what I mean by bunny hopping. It is the incessant jump jump jump that makes all combat play somewhat silly/annoying, and detracts from the strategy of all combat play. This breaks not only swordplay, but gunplay as well.

Moving around while fighting IS a strategy. And Rare has built in a mechanic specific for that: the block dodges. These are the only jumps that should be able to happen while you're fighting. Of course, there is no way you can "disable" jumping while in a combat situation. So, I propose the following changes:

    1. Jumping interrupts any weapon actions. Meaning, you cannot slash or block with your sword once you hit jump, and you cannot jump and shoot or aim at the same time. Jumping cancels either of the above.
    2. While in the air, you cannot do any weapon actions except weapon swap.
    3. You can still eat and jump at the same time.

This would serve to ground - literally - the PvP encounters around the core mechanics that favour thoughtful interaction to spammy jumping.

Edit: before people tell me to stop whining and git gud, I use the bunny hop all the time because it is just so darn effective. Doesn't make it any less silly or annoying. Heck, its even annoying to DO, let alone to be on the receiving end of it.

Something ought to be done about bunny hopping

Nothing ought to be done, a myriad of games allow bunny-hopping, others don't. This just so happens to belong in the group that does allow it.

Being a hard target to hit in video games is nothing new. Had we had the option to go prone, crouch, huddle behind cover, or take to the air people would do it. It is silly to sit here and take the stance that people using their full movement to their advantage is a problem. Anyone's inability to adapt is their problem, not the developers. We are 3 years into launch, its stupid to do anything at this point. This is something you do before launch, not 3 years after.

  • Shoot, cut, or bomb them as they land - there, problem solved.

Jumping around makes it SO much easier for people to hit you. Now maybe hitreg might be affected by you jumping around because it makes it harder for the game to position you correctly. But besides that having an enemy who CONSTANTLY jumps around makes your life easier since it's easier to predict a falling enemies' path.

  • Doesn't bother me and I stink at it and shooting at it.

They wanna not get shot. It's my job to adapt to their fair techniques not rares job to nerf my opponents for me

I admit I think bunny hopping is very silly and I'd prefer it not to be in the game as well. That being said, it is and its not going anywhere. Since launch there have been many for and against hopping threads and yet its still here. I believe that makes it fairly obvious that the devs like that fighting strategy/style or at the very least do not plan to do anything about it. Best to adapt to it.

  • This game would be leaps and bounds better if it had a movement system like battlefield. Vaulting with little to no jumping. Not gonna happen though unfortunately.

  • I think SoT actually encourages bunnyhopping as an essential travel technique more frequently used than sword lunging.
I can imagine it makes combat just as wonky as the pirate face on the OP's character.

Something has been done about bunnyhopping, it's been implemented.

  • OP is complaining about me.

    If they could catch me...

Tbh, they'd still end up sinking me if they could. 🧜🏽‍♀️

Bunny hopping is a strategy to make you miss your shots.....

That will destroy sword dash jumps which will ruin an amazing experience and maneuverability.

  • Ok, so I'll just land and shoot instead, then jump again after. Easy.

  • Nerf or ban every Combat mechanics and after that everybody complains about swordspam...
Just practice your aim or let them eat a blunderbomb.

  • Many things need fixing. This is not one of them.
