reparation to the ferry man

  • I have been enjoying the sea of thieves since Beta and enjoyed the community that has grown from nothing to 20 million and counting. For the longest time I had the idea that one should pay a small fine after death, nothing too big but maybe a handful of gold or doubloons should do. I believe this should be added because it gives both an attacking or defending player the encouragement to be more cautious and make things such as a parlay more likely to happen or to limit the sacrificing ones self with a gunpowder barrel. In short the fear of death needs to be upped a notch to really make each encounter worth the fight as well as increase friendly interactions instead of having a murder-hobo moment happen to you ship and crew

nope no way this idea was an idea from the start near launch but they never used it because one it's not fair to new players or people with low amounts of gold or doubloons so no thank you

  • Someone call Robin Hood

Prince John sent the Sheriff of Nottingham to shake down the poor

NEVER WE SHALL KILL KING JOHN!!! historically accurate

But everyone was a new player once, why does that make it unfair?

And about the low amounts of gold: You could easily fix that by making the fee "1% of your gold, with a maximum of 5k" or something similar.
The payment could also only apply to people with 250k or more, then newbies are safe as well.

I think it's a valid approach to making death more punishing and therefore encouraging people to be more careful, rather than instantly shooting themselves onto other boats.

Alternatively: Make the respawn time twice as long unless you give the fee to the ferryman. That way it is optional.

  • Gold or no gold, if i want to charge into a group of skellies with a lit keg thats my way to go. Loses the fun ways you can kill yourself if it costs you.

  • A death tax was tested at some point earlier in this game's development cycle. It was widely hated, so I highly doubt people will want it back. I personally am not a fan. It seems like a good way to abuse people through spawn-camping. We shouldn't make a system to drain bank accounts so easy.

Good point, but I feel making it an optional payment to reduce respawn time would avoid that issue and still serve the purpose of making death more punishing.

It would also be a fun little mechanic in my opinion, handing the ferryman a few coins to get off the ferry faster.

When crews face each other, they usually want to determine who is better by skill alone. Bank accounts shouldn't effect that. A quick respawn will certainly effect fights in an extremely tangible way.

The fee could be percentage-based (with a limit) so that it doesn't matter how much money you have.
